PROJECT DESCRIPTION 1) Global environmental and/or adaptation problems, root causes and barriers that need to be addressed: Peatlands are a fragile and unique ecosystem with important ecological functions and values. In addition to acting as repositories for biodiversity, peatlands in Southeast Asia is of global importance because of its ability to store an estimated 120 billion tonnes of carbon or approximately 5% of the world’s terrestrial carbon. The peatlands found in Malaysia significantly contribute to the global carbon store in this region. Peatlands also play a critical role in the socio-economic wellbeing of the country, particularly for their ecological and hydrological values, timber and non- timber forest products, water supply, flood control and many other social, environmental and economic benefits. In Malaysia, peatlands are the most widespread type of wetlands occurring in more than six (Selangor, Johor, Perak, Pahang, Sabah and Sarawak) of the 13 states and covering an area of about 2.6 million ha (approximately 8% of the total land area). The largest area of peat is found in Sarawak, which is more than 1.5 million ha.

Many of the communities are still forest-dependent even up to the present day. The need to safeguard the Totally Protected Areas’ (TPAs) rich resources from anthropogenic activities is becoming increasingly necessary and urgent. The development objective of the project proposal is to contribute to the integrated development of the buffer zone for environmental conservation and uplifting local communities livelihood. The specific objective is to secure the buffer zone’s forest for use by indigenous communities and to strengthen the protection of Pulong Tau. These objectives will be achieved through the establishment of 6,000 ha of the buffer zone, and securing a forest base to meet the communities’ needs. The project objectives and outputs will be met through integrated buffer zone management, training, and active involvement of primary and secondary stakeholders. The project will be sustained by Forest Department Sarawak (FDS) through its Community Service Initiative Unit (CSIU). Boat survey technique was applied in all surveyed sites (except in Bako National Park) within a period of 17 months, starting from April 2015 to August 2016. A cumulative riverbank distance of 618.6 km and a line transect of 24.14 km were surveyed. In this study, the estimation was conducted based on the forest types surveyed. Overall, 9,586 individuals of proboscis monkeys were estimated within three forest types, namely, mangrove, peat swamp and tropical heath (kerangas) forests. Peat swamp forest has the highest population of 6,174 individuals, with an estimated population density of 0.96 individuals/km2. The estimated populations in mangrove and tropical heath forests are 1,789 and 1,623 individuals, and with estimated population densities of 1.13 and 2.76 individuals/km2, respectively. A comparison of population estimates from different studies is complicated by their different methods of analyses. A standard method of analysis, in lieu of using forest types in the estimation is needed, so that the population estimates and the changes in the population size of the proboscis monkeys can be systematically compared and monitored in the future.

    Study of Proboscis Monkey at Bako National Park (Past, Present and Future) and its Implication to the Park Management By Mohamad Kasyfullah bin Zaini, Siali anak Aban Bako National Park Protected Areas and Biodiversity Conservation Unit Sarawak Forestry Corporation Abstract Proboscis monkey (Nasalis lavartus) and also popularly known as Orang Belanda or Rasong to the local people, is a totally protected animal in Sarawak, a species endemic to Borneo. At present, there are only five recorded sites in Sarawak where proboscis monkey can be found namely Bako National Park, Samunsam Wildlife Sanctuary, Maludam National Park, Kuching Wetland National Park and the Kuala Lawas Forest Reserve. It has been estimated by Salter & Mackenzie (1985) that only about 2000 individuals are found in Sarawak. Few studies have been done at Bako National Park since the past 20 years. Salter & Mackenzie, among the first researchers in 1981 has estimated a population of about 106 to 144 proboscis monkeys, students led by Brundell from University of Notingham in 1990 estimated 213 individuals, Zaini & Illias (2004 & 2005) estimated 275 and 111 individuals respectively found at Bako. It is suggested that continuous follow-up studies should be done, either adopting past methodologies or introducing new effective ones, and also to consider applying the Population Viability Analysis (PVA) and Population and Habitat Viability Assessment (PHVA) models, a new know-how to predict future population and probability of extinction. Proboscis at Bako has now become the focal icon to the park and visitors of which must be well managed to ensure its viability and healthy habitat. Its therefore, very relevant for scientists and experts to enhance studies on proboscis monkeys, not only for Sarawak but be able to incorporate their studies with other neighboring states and countries in Borneo, such as Sabah, Brunei and Kalimantan Indonesia.

P. pygmaeus is further divided into three subspecies based on their genetic divergence. These subspecies are also geographically apart from each other; with the Malaysian state of Sarawak having the least number of wild orangutans. In 2016, the threat level for the species was upgraded to ‘Critically Endangered’ under the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. The alarming upgrade was due to increased threats to the survival of the species in Borneo, mainly due to habitat degradation and forest loss as well as hunting. The actual orangutan numbers in the wild were still unclear despite the upgrade due to wide variance generated from various statistical methods or survey protocols used to estimate them. In Sarawak, the conservation efforts have been ongoing with the focus on preventing further population decline, habitat degradation and forest loss. The first step in this effort was to acquire baseline data on population estimates and distribution at the core habitats of Batang Ai-Lanjak-Entimau (BALE) where most of the viable orangutan populations are found in the State.

The state of Sarawak's forests CLAIMS: Taib claims that "Sarawak's forests are still as luxuriant as ever", and that this is demonstrated by Google Earth satellite imagesi Sarawak forest officials claim that 84% of Sarawak remains forestedii, while Taib has claimed that 70% of the State's forests are 'preserved''iii REALITY: ©2011 Google Earth, ©2011 Tele - The 84% figure includes areas of monoculture oil Atlas palm and exotic timber plantations; in fact only 65% of the land still has natural forest coveriv. - Google Earth satellite images clearly show that the vast majority of the remaining natural forest has been heavily degraded by multiple rounds of selective logging and is criss-crossed by a spider's web of logging roads (see image). - Environmental Impact Assessments of such areas describe them as being "beyond recovery"v. - Satellite images show that only 5 per cent of Sarawak's forests remain in a pristine state (unaffected by logging or plantations)vi. - Independent analysis of satellite images shows Sarawak has a higher deforestation rate than any other major tropical timber producervii and that the deforestation rate is increasingviii. IN MALAYSIA 1.0 INTRODUCTION 1.1 Gonystylus (ramin) is one of three genera of plants in the Gonystyloidae sub-family of Thymelaeaceae family. At present, the genus Gonystylus consisting of about 30 species of tall trees and some shrubs, is distributed throughout the Malesian area (Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Papua New Guinea, Singapore and Brunei Darussalam) with the majority of species found in Borneo (Soerianegara & Lemmens, 1994) with the exception of Central and East Java and the Lesser Sunda Islands. Eastward, the distribution area extends towards the Solomon Islands, Nicobar and Fiji. The vast majority of species are found on Borneo (27 species), especially in Sarawak. Peninsular Malaysia and Sumatra come second with 7 species each, and the Philippines possess 2 species. Other areas are occupied by a single species. There were also reported that twenty seven (27) species found in the Borneo island especially in Sarawak but only seven (7) species so far being reported occurring in Peninsular Malaysia. Cockburn (1976) described eight (8) ramin species that are found in Sabah. Ramin is also found in peat swamp forest up to the hill areas.
