They are the embodiment of artificial intelligence. Some things, like Mark’s wonderful commentary on Hong Kong cuisine and his off-the-cuff comments on everything and anything, just didn’t fit into the structure of The Robosapien Companion, but they will be of interest to anyone who is curious about or admires the man behind the robots. 291 292 APPENDIX ■ INTERVIEW WITH MARK TILDEN This interview was conducted on February 13, 2005, at Wolfgang’s Steakhouse in the Murray Hill neighborhood of midtown Manhattan, in New York City. I recorded it with an Olympus DM-10 voice recorder. The dining room at Wolfgang’s is known for its historic tiled ceilings designed by Raphael Guastavino. They are beautiful, but they are an acoustic night- mare! Fortunately, my trusty DM-10 was up to the task. I have edited this only very lightly, mainly breaks where we spoke to waiters and so on. Also note that during a portion of this interview, Mark is showing me a slideshow on a little portable LCD screen. Most of the pictures from the slideshow ended up in Chapter 3. But if during the interview he seems to be making a reference, chances are it is to something on the screen. Without further ado, here is the full text of the interview. -

Chapter 48 Modeling and Control of Legged Robots Summary Introduction The promise of legged robots over standard wheeled robots is to provide im- proved mobility over rough terrain. This promise builds on the decoupling between the environment and the main body of the robot that the presence of articulated legs allows, with two consequences. First, the motion of the main body of the robot can be made largely independent from the roughness of the terrain, within the kinematic limits of the legs: legs provide an active suspen- sion system. Indeed, one of the most advanced hexapod robots of the 1980s was aptly called the Adaptive Suspension Vehicle [1]. Second, this decoupling al- lows legs to temporarily leave their contact with the ground: isolated footholds on a discontinuous terrain can be overcome, allowing to visit places absolutely out of reach otherwise. -

Yet the issue of controlling dynamically stable walking for arbitrary biped robots is still open. We propose a simple control architecture based on the use of the FRI (Foot Rotation Indicator) point and the support polygon. The major advantage of the proposed architecture is that motion planning (and eventually sensor based re-planning (slower feedback loop)) is limited to the leg joints whereas the trunk and arm degrees of freedom are controlled in closed loop (faster feedback loop) to achieve overall dynamic stability. Such architecture allows to decouple the problem of dynamic stable walking in the two relatively simpler problems of gait generation and robot stabilization. This architecture is particularly suited for small size robots having limited onboard computational power and limited sensor suits. The e®ectiveness of the proposed method has been validated through Matlabr simulations and experimental tests performed on a Robovie-MS platform.
