Unable to interest American distributors, Cassavetes sent Shadows to Europe, where it was welcomed enthusiastically as a pioneering triumph of cinema verité, a harbinger of an American New Wave. It won the Critics’ Award at the 1960 Venice Film Festival and made a respectable profit.
