A remarkable new species of giant water scavenger beetle, Hydrophilus (Dibolocelus) harpe sp. nov., is described from Northeastern and Southeastern Brazil. Measuring nearly 5 cm in length, it is one of the largest species of Hydro- philidae in the world. It is superfi cially similar to Hydrophilus masculinus (Régim- bart, 1901) but is differentiated from that species by the form of the male protarsal claw and tibial spurs. A lectotype for Hydrophilus masculinus is also designated. Key words. Coleoptera, Hydrophilidae, aquatic beetles, taxonomy, lectotype designation, South America, Neotropical Region Introduction The genus Hydrophilus Geoffroy, 1762, namesake of the family Hydrophilidae, contains some of the largest aquatic beetles in the world. The genus presently contains 48 species distributed in three subgenera: Hydrophilus s. str. that occurs worldwide, Temnopterus So- lier 1834, that contains a pair Afrotropical species, and Dibolocelus Bedel, 1891 with nine species that are primarily Neotropical with one species in the Nearctic Region. SHORT (2010) reviewed and circumscribed the genus, and provided a cladistic analysis of the Hydrophilini based on adult morphology. Despite being relatively common and widespread, the last comprehensive treatment of the genus is more than 100 years old (RÉGIMBART 1901). -

Oancea All rights reserved ABSTRACT The Fate of Invention in Late 19th Century French Literature Ana I. Oancea This dissertation reads the novels of Jules Verne, Albert Robida, Villiers de l’Isle-Adam and Emile Zola, investigating the representation of inventors who specialize in electricity. The figure appears as the intersection of divergent literary movements: Zola, the father of Naturalism and leading proponent of a ‘scientific’ approach to literature, Villiers de l’Isle-Adam, decadent playwright and novelist, Robida, leading caricaturist and amateur historian, and Verne, prominent figure in the emerging genre of anticipation, all develop the inventor character as one who succeeds in realizing key technological aspirations of the 19th century. The authors, however, take a dim view of his activity. Studying the figure of the inventor allows us to gain insight into fundamental 19th century French anxieties over the nation’s progress in science and technology, its national identity, and international standing. The corpus casts science as a pillar of French culture and a modern expression of human creativity, but suggests that social control over how progress is achieved is more important than pure advancement, no matter the price of attaining control. There is a great desire for progress in this period, but as society’s dependence on scientific advancement is becoming apparent, so is its being ignorant of the means through which to achieve it. -

Hayes 2009 PREFACE When the University of Wyoming began collecting the papers of national entertainment figures in the 1970s, it was one of only a handful of repositories actively engaged in the field. Business and industry, science, family history, even print literature were all recognized as legitimate fields of study while prejudice remained against mere entertainment as a source of scholarship. There are two arguments to be made against this narrow vision. In the first place, entertainment is very much an industry. It employs thousands. It requires vast capital expenditure, and it lives or dies on profit. In the second place, popular culture is more universal than any other field. Each individual’s experience is unique, but one common thread running throughout humanity is the desire to be taken out of ourselves, to share with our neighbors some story of humor or adventure. This is the basis for entertainment. The Entertainment Industry collections at the American Heritage Center focus on the twentieth century. During the twentieth century, entertainment in the United States changed radically due to advances in communications technology. The development of radio made it possible for the first time for people on both coasts to listen to a performance simultaneously. The delivery of entertainment thus became immensely cheaper and, at the same time, the fame of individual performers grew. -

Medusa in Art
MEDUSA IN ART Medusa in Art. Look at the pictures of Medusa. Notice how she changes over time. Read the passages about Greek Art. Then, do the activities. Mythological monsters and decorative motifs Greek imagery is peopled with strange figures: major and minor divinities, personifications, terrifying monsters combining two or more species of animal. As ancient Greek art evolved, each creature quickly developed its own distinctive appearance, symbolizing its character and function. In the early 7th century BC, monsters from the Greek tradition of oral poetry began to appear in vase paintings. The centaur Nessos, the Gorgons, and the Chimaera became firmly established in the iconography of Greek mythology. At the same time, vases decorated in the Orientalizing style (notably in Corinth and eastern Greece) featured friezes of sphinxes, sirens and gryphons. The repertoire expanded with the flowering of Black-figure vase painting in the 1st half of the 6th century BC: the wings sprouted by gods and personifications such as Hermes, Eros (Love), Boreas (the north wind), Eos (the Dawn), and Nike (Victory) symbolize their supernatural powers or the gift of ubiquity. The sea-gods Nereus and Triton feature serpentine bodies covered with scales. Satyrs, the companions of Dionysus, have horses' tails and pointed ears. Monsters symbolizing the forces threatening civilization are represented, mainly, by elements from the animal world, both real and imagined. The Gorgon Medusa, whose gaze turns her enemies to stone; the Minotaur in its labyrinth; the Chimaera, and the Sphinx of Thebes are allegories of chaos, conquerable only by heroes - sometimes with divine help - whose downfall frees human society from their thrall. -

The Iconography of the Athenian Hero in Late Archaic Greek Vase-Painting Elizabeth Anne Bartlett Tucson, Arizona Bachelor of Art, Scripps College, 2006 Master of Art, University of Arizona, 2008 A Dissertation presented to the Graduate Faculty of the University of Virginia in Candidacy for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy McIntire Department of Art University of Virginia May 2015 ______________________________ ______________________________ ______________________________ ______________________________ –ABSTRACT– This study questions how Athenian vase-painters represented heroic figures during the late sixth and early fifth centuries B.C. – specifically from the death of Peisistratos in 528 B.C. to the return of Theseus' bones to Athens in 475/4 B.C. The study focuses on three specific Attic cult heroes with a strong presence both in the Greek world and on Athenian vases: Herakles, Theseus, and Ajax. Although individual studies have been published regarding various aspects of these three heroes, such as subject matter, cult worship, literary presence, and social history, the current one departs from them by categorizing, comparing, and contrasting the different portrayals of the three chosen heroes. Using Athenian vases as the primary form of evidence, the current study endeavors to uncover how individual iconography can – or cannot – identify the heroic figure. By using an iconographic approach of looking at attributes, dress, gestures, poses, and composition, a more complete picture of the image of the hero may be understood. Evidence of both the cult of, and importance of, the Athenian hero is stressed both in ancient texts and through archaeological evidence, thus supplemental material is taken into consideration. Illustrations of Greek heroes can be found on a variety of vase shapes of various techniques, and the accompanying catalogue includes almost 300 examples. -
