Many Tout près de la Rouvenède, la célèbre plage de Pampelonne, toujours intacte, offre des kilomètres de sable fin. Many splits make it possible to be out of sight and the sea-beds are of an exceptional beauty. Pampelonne, 5km of fine white sand and clear water The mythic beach of Pampelonne hides botanical secrets. The dunes possess a particular flora. Sea-brushed plants grow on the rocks. The beach of Pampelonne, situated on the city of Ramatuelle, is at the origin of the myth of Saint-Tropez. This immense five-kilometre-long bay with white sand is bordered on the north by the "Cap Saint-Tropez" and on the south by the "Cap Camarat". The colours change depending on the current. Twenty-seven private and public beaches share 27 hectares of the famous beach. Five paths lead to it from the "Route des Plages. It used to be a modest sand beach that sailors used to prepare their boats for the sea. It also witnessed the troops landing in Provence in August 1944. The beach of Pampelonne, visited by jet-set members, has become one of the most famous in the world. Two clubs are at the origin of the myth of Saint-Tropez : The " Tahiti Plage " was set up in 1946, using the bamboo set abandoned by the film studios of "la Victorine" (Nice) in 1935 after shooting the film "Song of Islands by Georges Manae. The " Club 55 " (created in 1955), which first served as a canteen for the shooting team of the mythic film with Brigitte Bardot "And God created woman", became a well-known restaurant. ALl the show-biz celebrities have come to this beach : 1950 : Errol Flyn 1960 : Brigitte Bardot, Roger Vadim and Jane Fonda 1970 : Michèle Morgan and Gilbert Bécaud 1980 to today : Sylvester Stallone, Claudia Schiffer, Elton John and Johnny Hallyday to name but a few ! When to take a bath in Pampelonne ? Do you want a crowded bath ? From July to August, Pampelonne welcomes 30,000 visitors a day. Beaches of all nature : monitored, unmonitored, public, private, and even nudist. It is not rare to come across a celebrity or a VIP. The public parking areas are plenty. For a fee of €3 to €4, your car will be parked all day. Do you prefer relaxation ? During the season, Pampelonne is quieter in the morning before 10.00 am and at night after 7.00 pm. And why not night-time bathing ? In the summer, the water often reaches 25° Celsius. You have to profit from the experience of swimming at night, particularly under the moonlight. Do you need a tonic bath ? Some audacious people swim all year round. THE EXPRESSION OF THE POLITICAL IN FRENCH CINEMA THE TECHNIQUES OF REALISM AND FANTASY FOR THE EXPRESSION OF THE POLITICAL IN FRENCH CINEMA FROM ITS ORIGINS TO THE NEW WAVE By FRANCES OKSANEN, B. A. (McMaster University) SUPERVISOR: Professor John Stout NUMBER OF PAGES: v, 167. ii .... '. ABSTRACT This study examines the relationship between film techniques and politics in French cinema. The first filmmakers established the basic techniques of cinema, using realism to record events, and fantasy to create amusements. Narrative film developed as a combination of these techniques. Cinema of the twenties was closely associated with the European art movements of Dadaism, Surrealism and Expressionism. By the thirties, the political polarisation and the threat of a second World War caused filmmakers to project political opinions and to portray societal problems. Narrative film became an important means of influencing public opinion, although not always in the directions intended. With the New Wave, autobiographical content and a return to early film techniques made narrative film both personal and traditional. The directors solidified the reputation of French cinema as topical, socially relevant, and politically involved. iii ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS I would like to thank my supervisor, Professor John C. Stout for his advice through the course of my research, and Professor Charles E.

I like that. --Andy Warhol Gagosian Gallery London is pleased to announce an exhibition of Andy Warhol's portraits of Brigitte Bardot. Bardot was the original sex kitten, a superstar of French New Wave cinema, and an icon of feminine sensuality. Aged eighteen, she gained sudden and worldwide notoriety for her steamy role in Roger Vadim's directorial debut, And God Created Woman (1956), which broke box-office records and censorship taboos with its titillating display of sex and eroticism in St Tropez. Despite mixed critical reviews, the film launched her career and presaged her international stardom. Bardot also caught the attention of French intellectuals: she was the subject of Simone de Beauvoir's 1959 essay "Brigitte Bardot and the Lolita Syndrome," which described her as a "locomotive of women's history", building upon existentialist themes to declare her the most liberated woman of post-war France. Her crowning achievement occurred in 1963 as Camille in Jean-Luc Godard's New Wave masterpiece Contempt, based on Alberto Moravia's emotionally raw account of a marital break-up, set against the intrigues of the international film industry.

  • Appendix 1: Selected Films
Appendix 1: Selected Films The very random selection of films in this appendix may appear to be arbitrary, but it is an attempt to suggest, from a varied collection of titles not otherwise fully covered in this volume, that approaches to the treatment of sex in the cinema can represent a broad church indeed. Not all the films listed below are accomplished – and some are frankly maladroit – but they all have areas of interest in the ways in which they utilise some form of erotic expression. Barbarella (1968, directed by Roger Vadim) This French/Italian adaptation of the witty and transgressive science fiction comic strip embraces its own trash ethos with gusto, and creates an eccentric, utterly arti- ficial world for its foolhardy female astronaut, who Jane Fonda plays as basically a female Candide in space. The film is full of off- kilter sexuality, such as the evil Black Queen played by Anita Pallenberg as a predatory lesbian, while the opening scene features a space- suited figure stripping in zero gravity under the credits to reveal a naked Jane Fonda. Her peekaboo outfits in the film are cleverly designed, but belong firmly to the actress’s pre- feminist persona – although it might be argued that Barbarella herself, rather than being the sexual plaything for men one might imagine, in fact uses men to grant herself sexual gratification. The Blood Rose/La Rose Écorchée (aka Ravaged, 1970, directed by Claude Mulot) The delirious The Blood Rose was trumpeted as ‘The First Sex Horror Film Ever Made’. In its uncut European version, Claude Mulot’s film begins very much like an arthouse movie of the kind made by such directors as Alain Resnais: unortho- dox editing and tricks with time and the film’s chronology are used to destabilise the viewer.

In addition, any quotation or extract must include full attribution. Michael Ahmed, M.A., B.A. PhD University of East Anglia Faculty of Film and Television Studies January 2013 Abstract The American exploitation film functioned as an alternative to mainstream Hollywood cinema, and served as a way of introducing to audiences shocking, controversial themes, as well as narratives that major American studios were reluctant to explore. Whereas American exploitation cinema developed in parallel to mainstream Hollywood, exploitation cinema in Britain has no such historical equivalent. Furthermore, the definition of exploitation, in terms of the British industry, is currently used to describe (according to the Encyclopedia of British Film) either poor quality sex comedies from the 1970s, a handful of horror films, or as a loosely fixed generic description dependent upon prevailing critical or academic orthodoxies. However, exploitation was a term used by the British industry in the 1960s to describe a wide-ranging and eclectic variety of films – these films included, ―kitchen-sink dramas‖, comedies, musicals, westerns, as well as many films from Continental Europe and Scandinavia. Therefore, the current description of an exploitation film in Britain has changed a great deal from its original meaning.

  • Politicising Stardom: Jane Fonda, IPC Films and Hollywood, 1977-1982
1 Politicising Stardom: Jane Fonda, IPC Films and Hollywood, 1977-1982 James Michael Rafferty Queen Mary, University of London Thesis submitted for the qualification of Doctorate of Philosophy (PhD) 2 Abstract This thesis is an empirical analysis of Jane Fonda’s films, stardom, and political activism during the most commercially successful period of her career. At the outset, Fonda’s early stardom is situated in relation to contemporaneous moral and political ideologies in the United States and how she functioned as both an agent and symbol of these ideologies. Her anti-war activism in the early-1970s constituted the apex of Fonda’s radicalisation and the nadir of her popular appeal; a central question of this thesis, therefore, is how her stardom was rehabilitated for the American mainstream to the point of becoming Hollywood’s most bankable actress. As the star and producer of IPC Films, Fonda developed political projects using commercial formats, namely Coming Home (1978), The China Syndrome (1979), Nine to Five (1980), and Rollover (1981). The final IPC film, On Golden Pond (1981), signalled an ideological breach in this political strategy by favouring a familial spectacle, and duly outperformed its predecessors significantly. The first and last chapters of this work provide historical parameters for IPC in Fonda’s career, while the remaining chapters are structured by the conceptual and political aspects of each IPC project. Julia (1977) is discussed as an IPC prototype through its dramatisation of political consciousness. Coming Home, The China Syndrome, Nine to Five, and Rollover all exhibit this motif whereas On Golden Pond employs melodramatic nostalgia.
