    Issue 02 – 2013 Journal –Peer Reviewed ZOYA STREET Gamesbrief [email protected] Polygons and practice in Skies of Arcadia This paper features research carried out at the Victoria and Albert Museum into the design history of Sega’s 2000 Dreamcast title, Skies of Arcadia (released in Ja- pan as Eternal Arcadia). It was released by Overworks, a subsidiary of Sega, at an interesting point in Japanese computer game history. A new generation of video game consoles was in its infancy, and much speculation in the industry sur- rounded how networked gaming and large, open, tridimensional game worlds would change game design in the years ahead. Skies of Arcadia is a game about sky pirates, set in a world where islands and continents foat in the sky. I became interested in this game because it was praised in critical reviews for the real sense of place in its visual design. It is a Jap- anese Role Playing Game (JRPG), meaning that gameplay focuses on exploring a series of spaces and defeating enemies in turn-based, probabilistic battles using a system similar to that established by tabletop games such as Dungeons & Dragons. This research is based on interviews with the producer Shuntaro Tanaka and lead designer Toshiyuki Mukaiyama, user reviews submitted online over the past 10 plus years, and historically informed design analysis. It is grounded in a broader study of the networks of production and consumption that surrounded and co-produced the Dreamcast as a cultural phenomenon, technological agent and played experience. Through design analysis, oral history and archival research, in this paper I will complicate notions of tridimensionality by placing a three dimensional RPG in a broader network of sociotechnical relationships.

April 20 to April 23, 2011 Abstract: Firms' new challenges in the 21st century involve innovation and society's request for a more responsible business model. Based on bounded rationality conditions and the important role of externalities, it is analyzed through a case study whether corporate social responsibility strategies are essential for companies to achieve sustainable competitive advantages. Key words: Sustainable Development; Sustainable Management; Corporate Social Responsability; Open Innovation models. 1. Introduction Efforts towards generating sustainable growth and steady benefits have owned its accurate planning to the competitive advantage owned by the company. In several studies, it has been demonstrated that Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) can improve a firm’s performance by enhancing the prestige and perception from consumers’ perspective (competitive advantage). However, it has also been denoted that solid inter-agents relationships are enhanced when they have consolidated CSR actions between them. New models for conducting business emerge, and together with them new difficulties. Known as “open innovation” (OI) models, the aforementioned collaborations between organizations have also gained a purely international character. This study aims to analyze those new interactions and relationships between firms, which of them succeed and the role corporate social responsibility plays in such a context. Taking into account the complex level of the existing interrelationship between agents and countries where they operate, it becomes difficult to accurately depict the company’s culture, its values, and beliefs; as shown in Figure 1.

Some of these accounts conflict with one another, so I try to present as coherent an account of the history as I can here. I do not claim that everything in this paper is true. Before Final Fantasy VII, console-based role-playing games (RPGs) were still a niche market, played only by a dedicated few who were willing to endure the long wait for the few games to cross the Pacific and onto American soil. Then came Final Fantasy VII in the September of 1997, wowing everybody with its amazing graphics, story and gameplay. The game single-handedly lifted console-based RPGs out of their little niche into the mainstream, selling millions of copies worldwide, and made Squaresoft a household name in video games. Abstract Immigration through Education: The Interwoven History of Korean International Students, US Foreign Assistance, and Korean Nation-State Building by Jane Jangeun Cho Doctor of Philosophy in History University of California, Berkeley Professor Kerwin Klein, Chair This dissertation identifies Korean international students as immigrants, as conduits of knowledge transfer, and as agents of change. Part of the American Cold War policy was to establish Korea’s higher educational institutions with a core group of US-educated people. Figuring prominently in this story is the US government’s use of foreign assistance as a diplomatic tool to build its influence abroad. The Korean government readily accepted the aid but imprinted its designs on the American blueprint to reflect its own goal of building a modern nation-state. American universities under contract with the US government assisted the redesign of key departments at Seoul National University (SNU) and the establishment of Korea Advanced Institute of Science (KAIS).
