Since taking office, he has been making Massachusetts a great place to live, work and raise a family while delivering a customer service-oriented state government that is as hard working as the people of the Commonwealth. Upon taking office, Governor Baker worked to close two budget gaps worth more than $2 billion without raising taxes, while bolstering local aid for schools and communities, investing in a more reliable public transportation system and prioritizing funds to fight the opioid and heroin epidemic. Governor Baker has supported robust business sectors by reforming the Commonwealth's regulatory environment, holding the line on taxes and advancing efforts to rein in energy costs. Ensuring Massachusetts continues to be a national leader in education, Governor Baker has invested more than $4.6 billion in Chapter 70 education funding — the highest level of local education aid in state history. Confronted with a devastating opioid and heroin epidemic, Governor Baker’s administration has implemented a plan focused on prevention, intervention, treatment and recovery support, including partnering with the legislature on the passage of landmark legislation. Met with a historic snowfall during his first winter in office that halted the Commonwealth's beleaguered mass transit system, Governor Baker undertook a major overhaul to fix the MBTA by appointing a Fiscal and Management Control Board to oversee the system's operations and finances, and prioritize investments in the core system that more than one million daily riders depend upon. Prior to his election, Governor Baker was a highly successful leader of complex business and government organizations, serving as a cabinet secretary to both Governors William Weld and Paul Cellucci, and leading Harvard Pilgrim Health Care as CEO from the brink of bankruptcy to one of the nation’s highest ranked healthcare providers. Raised in Needham, Governor Baker and his wife Lauren reside in Swampscott, and are the proud parents of their three children, Charlie, AJ and Caroline.     Asix Irish-American Identity: Personal Experience and Historical Evaluation he role of the Irish immigrant in California and the San Francisco Bay Area has been subject Tto review and interpretation ever since the Reverend Hugh Quigley wrote The Irish Race in Cali - fornia and on the Pacific Coast more than a century and a quarter ago. The tone that pervaded Quigley’s chronicle—one of promise and optimism—still finds echoes, albeit with critical insight and far greater nuance, in the last essays of this collection. Two California scholars discuss the Irish-American expe - rience in reflections that are drawn both from their personal histories as native San Franciscans and from their lifelong careers as academic historians. In the first essay, Kevin Starr, until recently Cali - fornia State Librarian, offers an autobiographical reflection on his early years in San Francisco, his gradual awareness of his own Irish heritage, and the evolution of his intellectual appreciation of the Irish experience in California. In the second essay, James P. Walsh provides a comprehensive sum - mary analysis of that experience. The son of Irish immigrants, his critique is informed by his own family history in San Francisco as well as four decades of research on the California Irish. The essay draws a clear distinction between the San Francisco pattern of openness, acceptance, and relative prosperity and the stereotypical portrayal of the Irish experience in the East. Despite the inventive - ness and exaggerations of Father Quigley’s 1878 chronicle, these favorable San Francisco Bay Area conditions make understandable Quigley’s enthusiastic observation that the Irish who pitched their tents in California rarely, if ever, returned to the East.

Since we first opened our doors in Charlestown in 1893, Boys & Girls Clubs of Boston has depended on generous individual, corporate, foundation, and government donors to ensure our continued success. With your help, we have remained a pioneer in youth development, offering life-enhancing programs that create a brighter future for our children and teens. As times have changed over the decades, BGCB’s Clubs have remained a beacon of hope and opportunity for the young people we serve, providing safe spaces in which our members can learn and grow despite the challenges they may face at home or in their neighborhoods. From cobbling and woodworking to music production and wheelchair basketball, BGCB’s programs have evolved over more than a century. What has remained consistent is the dedication of our expert staff members, from aquatics directors to social workers, who serve as role models and create positive, lasting relationships with our members.
