University of Debrecen Doctoral Programme in British and American Studies A TALE OF A PUB: READING THE “CYCLOPS” EPISODE OF JAMES JOYCE’S ULYSSES IN THE CONTEXT OF IRISH CULTURAL NATIONALISM Marianna Gula 1 Introduction The 1990s’ introduction of post-colonial theory into Joyce criticism has brought about a thorough reassessment of Joyce’s relationship to politics and history in general, and British imperialism and Irish nationalism in particular. In contrast to the New Critical vision of his work as the manifestation of an apolitical, cosmopolitan modernist aestheticism, his texts have come increasingly to be seen as complex − most often subversive − sites of ideological involvement. The “Cyclops” episode of Ulysses, which most explicitly engages with the issue of Irish nationalism, has been at the forefront in this process. The chapter’s engagement with Irish nationalism, noted by the first commentators, underwent a particularly vigorous reappraisal in the past decade. This process evinced a shift from associating nationalism exclusively with the xenophobic citizen’s nostalgia and violence against Bloom to problematising the issue by contextualised readings accommodating the discourses of imperialism and nationalism. My inquiry aims to further this ongoing critical enterprise by placing the episode in the discursive context of Irish cultural nationalism. Highlighting the text against the backdrop of Irish cultural nationalism in general, not only the 1890s Celtic Revival, which provided the most immediate cultural context for Joyce and which has hitherto been mostly targeted, I explore how the text ironically re-inscribes crucial discursive formations arising out of an organic conception of the nation, and how it subversively enlists the key cultural means of their dissemination. -

Liggett, The first “Kalem Girl” Lived: May 17, 1885 - December 18, 1966 Worked as: co-director, company co-director, director, film actress, producer, scenario writer, screenwriter, source author, writer Worked In: United States by Gretchen Bisplinghoff During the years 1907-1912, Gene Gauntier, the first “Kalem Girl,” was the preeminent figure at the Kalem Film Manufacturing Company. She played key roles in the events that comprise established film history. She wrote the scenario for Ben Hur (1907), the work involved in the controversy that established the first copyright laws covering motion pictures, and wrote and acted in key films. In addition, she acted in the Nan, the Confederate Spy series: The Girl Spy (1909), The Girl Spy Before Vicksburg (1910), The Further Adventures of the Girl Spy (1910), cross-dressing forerunners of the serial action queens. She appeared in The Lad From Old Ireland (1910), the first film shot on location outside of the United States, and in From the Manger to the Cross (1912), the first feature-length treatment of the life of Christ. The Kalem Company was the first to make fiction motion pictures on location around the world, which has meant that 35mm film prints and other documents may have been deposited in archives outside the United States, the best example of which is the Irish Film Archives in Dublin, where one extant Gene Gauntier Feature Players title and five Kalem titles are archived (Condon 2008). In December 1912 she left Kalem to form the Gene Gauntier Feature Players Company, a decision enthusiastically hailed by the Moving Picture World, which noted that she was popular “the world over” (1169). -

A Social History of Music in Coolgardie, Kalgoorlie and Boulder 1892 to 1908 by Jean E Farrant BA MusB (Hons) Thesis submitted in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts, Music Department, University of Western Australia February 1992 Resume The Eastern Goldfields of Western Australia developed very rapidly from the time that gold was first discovered at Coolgardie in 1892. Many of the townships which sprang up so quickly all over the region had a very short life, while others continued to thrive for some years. Kalgoorlie, which was soon to become the centre for the goldfields, is still a city today with a sizeable population, although its fortunes have waxed and waned over the years. This study traces the growth of musical activities in three of the towns of the area from their earliest beginnings to the peak of their prosperity. (In the case of Coolgardie, its rapid decline at the beginning of the century will also be noted.) The survey finishes in 1908, the year that imressive town hall buildings were opened in Boulder and Kalgoorlie respectively. Music was part of nearly every social acitivity of the day and there were attempts to establish the same types of musical organisations in each town. However, it will be demonstrated that certain musical groups flourished more successfully than others in the three townships selected for study, reflecting differences in background and interests of the local inhabitants. There was a strong community spirit in these townships clearly shown in the large sums of money raised for charity through music and the notion of a special goldfields ethos kept alive, in part, in organisations such as the Coolgardie Liedertafel, which held reunions long after its members had left the town. -
