To some of us, the list of names become people who were born, lived; who were happy and sad; who laughed, cried, lived and died. Imagine what those first pioneers must have seen here on the frontier! What fears they had. This area was a wild and untamed land of animals, Indians, no neighbors only a select few who dared to brave the land, they were far and few between. This church at Church Hill was the only place of worship west of the Conococheague in the 1730s. You are challenged to take your mind back in time and remember these people who had names. Then there were wars — The French and Indian, The Pontiac Rebellion, The Revolutionary, The War of 1812 and the terrible Civil War. These same people were all a part of each conflict, the old and young alike. The women and children were left home to take up the duties of the hardy men. We read of happy times, when the pioneers would get together and help each other; they attended worship all day, there were always the weddings and births to enjoy. There may have been several homes where everyone longed for an invitation to a social affair, such as in "Clifton Hall". All was not happiness -- there were children born and who died young, diseases were not yet under control, hard work, no indoor facilities, the cold in the winter, the insects in the summer, we could go on and on, but you get the picture. Now to the purpose of the Church Records. The abstracting is to remind us that others were here to pave the way, to make our lives much easier. In this Two Hundred and Fiftieth year we truly are "WE THE PEOPLE" and we here today cannot let it go by without letting others in the future know "WE WERE HERE" and not just black ink on «lia-fe- paper. In an undertaking such as this, we feel confident that you will find errors, but they are not intentional, however, it does show you a place to do research. You will note some names spelled different than today, such as TOD with one D, that is exactly as it appears in the records. Also McClelland and McConnell may have had no d or 1 on the end of the name. These records may help you in your search for a long lost family. This Church Record section will be continued in a SUPPLEMENT, at some future date, with the Session's permission. Also, in the Supplement will be an index to this entire book. -ii- TABLE OF CONTENTS INTRODUCTION 11 COMMUNION MEMBERS 1770 - 1877 1-22 Dr. Rose's Records (1920) 23-25 New Church Register (1932-1977) 26-32 Persons Admitted to Membership (1977-1988) 32b PASTOR'S REGISTER (MARRIAGES) 33-42 The Rev.
