To some of us, the list of names become people who were born, lived; who were happy and sad; who laughed, cried, lived and died. Imagine what those first pioneers must have seen here on the frontier! What fears they had. This area was a wild and untamed land of animals, Indians, no neighbors only a select few who dared to brave the land, they were far and few between. This church at Church Hill was the only place of worship west of the Conococheague in the 1730s. You are challenged to take your mind back in time and remember these people who had names. Then there were wars — The French and Indian, The Pontiac Rebellion, The Revolutionary, The War of 1812 and the terrible Civil War. These same people were all a part of each conflict, the old and young alike. The women and children were left home to take up the duties of the hardy men. We read of happy times, when the pioneers would get together and help each other; they attended worship all day, there were always the weddings and births to enjoy. There may have been several homes where everyone longed for an invitation to a social affair, such as in "Clifton Hall". All was not happiness -- there were children born and who died young, diseases were not yet under control, hard work, no indoor facilities, the cold in the winter, the insects in the summer, we could go on and on, but you get the picture. Now to the purpose of the Church Records. The abstracting is to remind us that others were here to pave the way, to make our lives much easier. In this Two Hundred and Fiftieth year we truly are "WE THE PEOPLE" and we here today cannot let it go by without letting others in the future know "WE WERE HERE" and not just black ink on «lia-fe- paper. In an undertaking such as this, we feel confident that you will find errors, but they are not intentional, however, it does show you a place to do research. You will note some names spelled different than today, such as TOD with one D, that is exactly as it appears in the records. Also McClelland and McConnell may have had no d or 1 on the end of the name. These records may help you in your search for a long lost family. This Church Record section will be continued in a SUPPLEMENT, at some future date, with the Session's permission. Also, in the Supplement will be an index to this entire book. -ii- TABLE OF CONTENTS INTRODUCTION 11 COMMUNION MEMBERS 1770 - 1877 1-22 Dr. Rose's Records (1920) 23-25 New Church Register (1932-1977) 26-32 Persons Admitted to Membership (1977-1988) 32b PASTOR'S REGISTER (MARRIAGES) 33-42 The Rev. • Nick Willis Discipline: Middle Distance Running Specialist Events: 800M and 1500M
CHAT with a Olympic Education CHAMPION Nick Willis Discipline: Middle distance running Specialist events: 800m and 1500m Nick Willis was born in Lower Hutt (near Wellington) in 1983.Running talent obviously runs in the Willis family, as Nick and his brother Steve are the only brothers in the history of New Zealand to run a mile in less than 4 minutes. When he was at Hutt Valley High School in January 2001, Nick became the fastest New Zealand student to run a mile in just 4 minutes and 1.33 seconds. After high school, Nick was awarded an athletics scholarship at the University of Michigan in the United States of America. He thrived in the environment, and his running went from strength to strength. He represented New Zealand at the 2004 Athens Olympic Games and the 2005 World Championships, reaching the semi- final each time. At the 2006 Melbourne Commonwealth Games, Nick took the Gold Medal in the 1500m. In 2008, he reached the final of the 1500m at the Beijing Olympic Games. After a tight race, Nick finished third to claim the Bronze Medal. In 2009, the winner of the race, Rashid Ramzi, was disqualified because of a positive drug test. So Nick’s Bronze Medal was upgraded to a Silver. (For further information on Nick’s experiences at the 2008 Olympic Games, see “It Pays to Play Fair” in the Living the Olympic Values resource, http:// www.olympic.org.nz/education/living-olympic-values) At the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi, Nick was recovering from knee surgery, but he didn’t let this stop him from winning the Bronze Medal.

MARTIN'S BENCH AND BAR OF PHILADELPHIA Together with other Lists of persons appointed to Administer the Laws in the City and County of Philadelphia, and the Province and Commonwealth of Pennsylvania BY , JOHN HILL MARTIN OF THE PHILADELPHIA BAR OF C PHILADELPHIA KKKS WELSH & CO., PUBLISHERS No. 19 South Ninth Street 1883 Entered according to the Act of Congress, On the 12th day of March, in the year 1883, BY JOHN HILL MARTIN, In the Office of the Librarian of Congress, at Washington, D. C. W. H. PILE, PRINTER, No. 422 Walnut Street, Philadelphia. Stack Annex 5 PREFACE. IT has been no part of my intention in compiling these lists entitled "The Bench and Bar of Philadelphia," to give a history of the organization of the Courts, but merely names of Judges, with dates of their commissions; Lawyers and dates of their ad- mission, and lists of other persons connected with the administra- tion of the Laws in this City and County, and in the Province and Commonwealth. Some necessary information and notes have been added to a few of the lists. And in addition it may not be out of place here to state that Courts of Justice, in what is now the Com- monwealth of Pennsylvania, were first established by the Swedes, in 1642, at New Gottenburg, nowTinicum, by Governor John Printz, who was instructed to decide all controversies according to the laws, customs and usages of Sweden. What Courts he established and what the modes of procedure therein, can only be conjectur- ed by what subsequently occurred, and by the record of Upland Court.

AUSTRALIAN JOINT COPYING PROJECT SIR TIMOTHY COGHLAN Papers, 1878-1969 Reels M807-M814, M828 Mr A.F. Coghlan Ludwell Grange Horsted Keynes Haywards Heath West Sussex National Library of Australia State Library of New South Wales Filmed: 1971-72 BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE Sir Timothy Augustine Coghlan (1855-1926) was born in Sydney, the son of Irish immigrants. He attended the Cleveland Street Public School and Sydney Grammar School. In 1870 he became a pupil-teacher at Fort Street Public School and in 1873 he joined the Department of Public Works. Enjoying the statistical and mathematical aspects of the work, he rose rapidly and by 1884 he was an assistant engineer. He did not, however, aspire to be an engineer and in 1886 he successfully sought the new position of government statistician. Coghlan held the post for nearly twenty years and was widely recognised as the leading statistician in Australia. He became a fellow of the Royal Statistical Society in 1893. He published the annual New South Wales Statistical Register and the Wealth and Progress of New South Wales. An ambitious man, he expanded the functions of his office and eagerly accepted commissions from the Government. He advised it on financial, electoral reform and local government matters, he was a member of the Public Service Board from 1896 onwards and was the Registrar of Friendly Societies from 1892 to 1905. He served on a number of royal commissions. He was the obvious choice for the position of Commonwealth Statistician, but he turned down the offer in 1906. Coghlan visited England in 1897 and investigated the Agent-General’s office on behalf of the Public Service Board.

  • New Zealand Athletes Who Have Set World Records and World Bests
New Zealand Athletes who have set World Records and World Bests Compiled by Steve Hollings The first New Zealand athlete ever to hold a World Record (World Best) was John Hempton who ran 9 4/5 seconds for the 100 yards on what is now Waitangi Day (6 February) 1892 at the New Zealand Championships at (the then) Lancaster Park in Christchurch. The difference between a World Record and a World Best performance is that the former is a performance that is ratified by the International Association of Athletics Federations, or its predecessor the International Amateur Athletics Federation (IAAF) where the performance was achieved using strictly enforced regulations at the time the performance was achieved. These regulations have changed over time and the list of events where World Records can be achieved has also changed over time. For example, the Marathon has only recently – 2004, become an event where a World Record can be established and set. Previous to this date performances in the Marathon were regarded as World Best performances. Between 1921 and 1935, Women’s performances were recognized by the Women’s World Federation (FSFI), but after that time the ratification of Women’s records fell under the auspices of the IAAF. A World Best performance is determined as being a performance that was achieved in an event that was/is not on the list of events recognized for World Records or was achieved prior to the establishment of the IAAF or was never ratified because of certain circumstances. Only six New Zealand men - Peter Snell (800m, 880 yards, 1000m, 1 mile – twice), Jack Lovelock (1500m, 1 mile), John Walker (1 mile, 2000m), Murray Halberg (2 miles, 3 miles), Dick Quax (5000m) and William (Bill) Baillie (20 kilometres, 1 hour) have held World Records that were ratified by the IAAF.
