WORSHIP GUIDE | NOVEMBER O1, 2020 WELCOME & ANNOUNCEMENTS Rev. Marti Soper OPENING VOLUNTARY “Frühling” (“Spring”) from Four Last Songs Richard Strauss text by Hermann Hesse In dämmrigen Grüften In halflight I waited, Träumte ich lang Dreamed all too long Von deinen Bäumen und blauen Lüften, of your trees in blossom, Von deinem Duft und Vogelsang. Those flowering breezes, that fragrant blue Nun liegst du erschlossen And your song. In Gleiß und Zier, Now streaming and glowing Von Licht übergossen From sky to field with light overflowing Wie ein Wunder vor mir. All these charms are revealed Du kennst mich wieder, Light gilds the river, Du lockestmich zart, Light floods the pain; Es zittert durch all meine Glieder Spring calls me: Deine selige Gegenwart and through me there quiver Life’s own loveliness Life’s own sweetness returned again! CALL TO WORSHIP from Deuteronomy 6 Craig Howard Now this is the commandment that the Lord your God charged me to teach you… Hear therefore, O People of God… so that it may go well with you, and so that you may multiply greatly in a land flowing with milk and honey, as the Lord, the God of your ancestors, has promised you. You, O God, have been our help in ages past. Hear, O People of God: The Lord is our God, the Lord alone. You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your might. Keep these words that I am commanding you today in your heart. Be, O God, our hope for years to come. Recite them to your children and talk about them when you are at home and when you are away, when you lie down and when you rise. People: Be thou our guide while life shall last… Voice 4: Bind them as a sign on your hand, fix them as an emblem on your forehead, and write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates. Be our eternal home! OPENING SONG For All The Saints SINE NOMINE For all the Saints who from their labors rest, Who thee by faith before the world confessed, Thy name, O Jesus, be forever blest. Alleluia, Alleluia. And when the strife is fierce, the warfare long, Steals on the ear the distant triumph song, And hearts are brave again, and arms are strong. Alleluia, Alleluia. A TIME OF REMEMBRANCE LauraMay Sorkin George We remember with love those in our church family who have gone before us this past year. Shirley Cooper David Copeland Travis Jordan Cherie Murphy Ken Shields Mary Williams SONG OF REMEMBRANCE “Im Abendrot” (“At Sunset”) from Four Last Songs Richard Strauss text by Joseph von Eichendorff Wir sind durch Not und Freude Here both in need and gladness gesangen Hand in Hand, We wandered hand in hand; vom Wandern ruhn wir beide Now let us pause at last nun überm stillen Land. Above the silent land. Rings sich die Täler neigen, Dusk comes the vales exploring, es dunkelt schon die Luft, The darkling air grows still, zwei Lerchen nur noch steigen Alone two skylarks soaring nachträumend in den Duft. IN song their dreams fulfill. Tritt her und laß sie schwirren, Draw close and leave them singing, bald ist es Schlafenszeit, Soon will be time to sleep, daß wir uns nicht verirren How lost our ways beginning! in dieser Einsamkeit. This solitude, how deep O weiter, stiller Friede, O rest so long desired! o tief im Abendrot. We sense the nights soft breath Wie sind wir wandermüde – Now we are tired, how tired! ist dies etwa der Tod? Can this perhaps be death? PASTORAL PRAYER Rev. Marti Soper LORD’S PRAYER Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come; thy will be done; on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen. SCRIPTURE Mark 12:28-34 One of the scribes came near and heard them disputing with one another, and seeing that he answered them well, he asked him, “Which commandment is the first of all?” 29 Jesus answered, “The first is, ‘Hear, O Israel: the Lord our God, the Lord is one; 30 you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength.’ 31 The second is this, ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no other commandment greater than these.” 32 Then the scribe said to him, “You are right, Teacher; you have truly said that ‘he is one, and besides him there is no other’; 33 and ‘to love him with all the heart, and with all the understanding, and with all the strength,’ and ‘to love one’s neighbor as oneself,’—this is much more important than all whole burnt offerings and sacrifices.” 34 When Jesus saw that he answered wisely, he said to him, “You are not far from the kingdom of God.” After that no one dared to ask him any question. SERMON Rev. Marti Soper SONG OF RESPONSE “September" from Four Last Songs Richard Strauss text by Hermann Hesse Der Garten trauert, These mournful flowers, kühl sinkt in die Blumen der Regen. Rain drenched in the coolness are bending, Der Sommer schauert While Summer cowers, still seinem Ende entgegen. Mute as he waits for his ending, Golden tropft Blatt um Blatt Gravely each golden leaf nieder vom hohen Akazienbaum. Falls from the tallest Acacia tree; Sommer Lächelt erstaunt und matt Summer marvels and smiles to see in den sterbenden Gartentraum. His own garden grow faint with grief. Lange noch bei den Rosen Lingering still, near the roses long he stays, bleibt er stehn, sehnt sich nach Ruh, Longs for repose; langsam tut er die (großen) müdgewordnen Languid, slow to the last, Augen zu. his weary eye lids close. COMMUNION LITURGY Rev. Marti & Rev. Jack Soper The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them up to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise. It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Father Almighty (almighty God), Creator of heaven and earth: God of Abraham and Sarah, God of Miriam and Moses, God of Joshua and Deborah, God of Ruth and David, God of the priests and the prophets, God of Mary and Joseph, God of the apostles and the martyrs, God of our mothers and our fathers, God of our children to all generations. And so, with your people on earth and all the company of heaven, we praise your name and join their unending hymn: Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest Holy are you, and blessed is your Son Jesus Christ. By the baptism of his suffering, death, and resurrection you gave birth to your Church, delivered us from slavery to sin and death, and made with us a new covenant by water and the Spirit. On the night in which he gave himself up for us… …And so, in remembrance of these your mighty acts in Jesus Christ, we offer ourselves in praise and thanksgiving as a holy and living sacrifice, in union with Christ's offering for us, as we proclaim the mystery of faith. Christ has died; Christ is risen; Christ will come again. Pour out your Holy Spirit on us gathered here, and on these gifts of bread and cup. Make them be for us outward and visible signs of an inward and spiritual grace, that we may be for the world the body of Christ, redeemed by God’s love. Since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, strengthen and inspire us to run with perseverance the race that is set before us, By your Spirit make us one with Christ, one with each other, and one in ministry to all the world, until Christ comes in final victory, and we feast at the heavenly banquet. Through Jesus the Christ, with the Holy Spirit in your holy Church, all honor and glory is yours, God of Grace, now and forever. Amen. COMMUNION SONG As We Gather At Your Table BEACH SPRING As we gather at your table, as we listen to your word, Help us know, O God your presence; let our minds and hearts be stirred. Nourish us with sacred story till we claim it as our own; Teach us through this holy banquet how to make Love’s victory known. Gracious Spirit, help us summon other guest to share the feast Where triumphant Love will welcome those who had been last and least. There no more will envy bind us nor will pride our peace destroy, As we join with saints and angels to repeat the sounding joy. PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING Rev.
