ABSTRACT Title of Dissertation / Thesis
ABSTRACT Title of Dissertation / Thesis: MAKING DANCE THAT MA TTERS: DANCER, CHOREOGRAPHE R, COMMUNITY ORGANIZER, PUBLIC INTELLECTUAL LIZ LER MAN Lisa Traiger, M.F.A., 2004 Thesis Directed By: Visiting Associate Professor Karen Bradley, Depar tment of Dance Washington, D.C. -based choreographer and dancer Liz Lerman, a MacArthur Award recipient, has been making dances of consequence for 30 years. Her choreography, her writing and her public speaking tackle “big ideas” for the dance field and society at large. Lerman articulates those ideas as questions: “Who gets to dance? Where is the dance happening? What is it about? Why does it matter?” This thesis investigates how Lerman has used her expertise as a choreographer, dancer and spokesperson to propel herself and her ideas beyond the tightly knit field into the larger community as a public intellectual. A brief history and overview defines public intellectual, followed by an examination of Lerman’s early life and influences. Finally, three them atic areas in Lerman’s work – personal narrative, Jewish content and community -based art – are explored through the lens of three choreographic works: “New York City Winter” (1974), “The Good Jew?” (1991) and “Still Crossing” (1986). MAKING DANCE THAT MATTERS: DANCER, CHOREOGRAPHE R, COMMUNITY ORGANIZ ER, PUBLIC INTELLECTUAL LIZ LERMAN By Lisa Traiger Thesis or Dissertation submitted to the Faculty of the Graduate School of the University of Maryland, College Park, in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Fine Arts 2004 Advisory Committee: Visiting Associate Professor Karen Bradley, Chair Professor Meriam Rosen Professor Suzanne Carbonneau © Copyright by Lisa Traiger 2004 Preface The first time I experienced Liz Lerman’s choreography, I danced it. -

CENTERPOINT WORSHIP TEAM AUDITION Auditions are, by nature, a little intimidating. We will try to make the process as relaxed as possible. In some cases, it may be evident that an applicant’s skills have not developed enough to serve on a regularly scheduled basis. Should this be the case, those conducting the audition will give some advice on how the applicant can improve. After some time and practice another audition may be scheduled. Prepare the following songs for your audition. If a key change is required for vocal auditions, please contact the worship pastor. You are encouraged to audition with one more worship song of your choice to highlight your talent. The Perkinson Music Center is packed with students rehearsing for senior recitals, juries, and the final ensemble performances. Our sports teams in tennis, track, softball, and baseball have full schedules, coming off spring break trips to sunnier climes to face the unpredictable weather and tough competition of the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW), one of the nation’s best Division III athletic conferences. Students are preparing to present their research, including their James Millikin Scholar projects, in the Celebrations of Scholarship. As President, I revel in this whirlwind of activity and delight in the energy on our campus. One day might have me going to a late afternoon Q and A session with Student Senate and later stopping by a game at our new Workman Family Softball Field, before heading to a couple of innings of baseball. -
How to Be the Worst Line Dance Band Ever to Appear at Wittingdon Church Hall
HOW TO BE THE WORST LINE DANCE BAND EVER TO APPEAR AT WITTINGDON CHURCH HALL Loosely based on a true story All the names have been changed to protect the innocent! by Vivienne Scott “I won’t be long John, just popping down to the shop to get some milk”, I called out. “Not that he can hear me”, I mumbled to myself. In fact, I could hardly hear myself!! “Good job our neighbours are in on this too”. I smiled as I pictured Ralph and Bob lugging their electric guitars into our garage thirty minutes before. This all started a few months ago when we invited our neighbours over for a barbecue. The men started reminiscing about the fact that they had all dreamt of being rock stars when they were young and not the 50 years olds they currently were! Bob had actually had some experience playing guitar in a high school band and his brother Nigel, the accountant, had gone so far as to play drums for a big band when he was in college. John, my husband, had always fancied himself as a keyboard player but although he had a good ear for a tune he had never played the piano. Paul, the local electrician, who had dropped by to fix our kitchen light socket, enthusiastically joined in the discussion informing everyone that he used to play the drums and he was great at karaoke as well Before any of the wives had a chance to raise objections, a band was borne and John had invited them all to practice in our garage.
