Lords of the Dance: the Rapture of Rikud Rabbi Michael Olshin Lords of the Dance Rabbi Michael Olshin Lords of the Dance: The Rapture of Rikud Rabbi Michael Olshin Introduction I heard from the Talne Rebbe shlit”a a very witty quip from one of the simple but sharp Jews of yesteryear – On simchat Torah one of the simple members of the community was dancing with the Torah during the hakafot of Simchat Torah with tremendous enthusiasm/hitlahavut. The Misnagdische Rav said to him, Excuse me Mendel but I couldn’t help but notice how you were dancing but what right have you to dance like that, did you have any connection/shaychus to the learning of Torah this year? The chossid answered no, I did not learn any Torah but neither do I have any shaychus to accepting any So why did I say it .על שחטאנו לפניך בכפת שוחד bribes this year, yet last week on Yom Kippur I said because the Rav has a shaychus to bribes so to I dance today because the Rav has a shaychus to the study of Torah. Dance in Tanakh The most famous dance is certainly David Hamelech in front of the Aron Kodesh as described in Sefer Shmuel Bet Chapter 6. There the word that is used for dance is Rikud. But where is the first dance mentioned in the Torah? In Sefer Shmot Perek 15. Miriam leads the women in dance immediately after the splitting of the sea. They took out drums and they dance. There the term used for dance is Machol. What is the difference between machol and rikud? Compare the sources below: 1. 1 Chag at Home 5781 Lords of the Dance Rabbi Michael Olshin Machol is circles, hand in hand, group, symmetry, not individualistic. Rikud is the individual dance, much more provocative, make yourself noticeable. What are the advantages and disadvantages of these two different types of expressions? “Dancing of Rikud” has an inherent contradiction in it. On the one hand it is very personal and expressive of an ecstatic rapture but on the other hand it is showy and draws attention to yourself. It can be perceived and may even be an expression of gaava. A person may not be totally himself when others are looking at him. Imagine the first person to have ever danced. The closest thing that we can come to it is when there is no one else home and we let go. We rarely ever dance like that when we are in the presence of others. Questions to Ponder What was the machloket between David Hamelekh and Michal Bat Shaul? Who do you think was right? Can you bring a proof from the text? ?of the consequence of Michal being childless )מידה כנגד מידה( What is the measure for measure What do you think about the popular practice today of the friends of the bride or groom performing a choreographed dance at weddings in light of our discussion? Perhaps the Gemara on Tractate Ketubot can shed light on some of these questions: 3. As we approach the Yom Tov of Sukkot. There is no holiday in the calendar in which dance is more prevalent. Let us now look at sources that focus on dance in the context of the Simcha of Sukkot, Simchat Beit Hoshoeiva and Simchat Torah 4. 2 Chag at Home 5781 Lords of the Dance Rabbi Michael Olshin ABSTRACT Title of Dissertation / Thesis: MAKING DANCE THAT MA TTERS: DANCER, CHOREOGRAPHE R, COMMUNITY ORGANIZER, PUBLIC INTELLECTUAL LIZ LER MAN Lisa Traiger, M.F.A., 2004 Thesis Directed By: Visiting Associate Professor Karen Bradley, Depar tment of Dance Washington, D.C. -based choreographer and dancer Liz Lerman, a MacArthur Award recipient, has been making dances of consequence for 30 years. Her choreography, her writing and her public speaking tackle “big ideas” for the dance field and society at large. Lerman articulates those ideas as questions: “Who gets to dance? Where is the dance happening? What is it about? Why does it matter?” This thesis investigates how Lerman has used her expertise as a choreographer, dancer and spokesperson to propel herself and her ideas beyond the tightly knit field into the larger community as a public intellectual. A brief history and overview defines public intellectual, followed by an examination of Lerman’s early life and influences. Finally, three them atic areas in Lerman’s work – personal narrative, Jewish content and community -based art – are explored through the lens of three choreographic works: “New York City Winter” (1974), “The Good Jew?” (1991) and “Still Crossing” (1986). MAKING DANCE THAT MATTERS: DANCER, CHOREOGRAPHE R, COMMUNITY ORGANIZ ER, PUBLIC INTELLECTUAL LIZ LERMAN By Lisa Traiger Thesis or Dissertation submitted to the Faculty of the Graduate School of the University of Maryland, College Park, in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Fine Arts 2004 Advisory Committee: Visiting Associate Professor Karen Bradley, Chair Professor Meriam Rosen Professor Suzanne Carbonneau © Copyright by Lisa Traiger 2004 Preface The first time I experienced Liz Lerman’s choreography, I danced it.

  • How to Be the Worst Line Dance Band Ever to Appear at Wittingdon Church Hall
HOW TO BE THE WORST LINE DANCE BAND EVER TO APPEAR AT WITTINGDON CHURCH HALL Loosely based on a true story All the names have been changed to protect the innocent! by Vivienne Scott “I won’t be long John, just popping down to the shop to get some milk”, I called out. “Not that he can hear me”, I mumbled to myself. In fact, I could hardly hear myself!! “Good job our neighbours are in on this too”. I smiled as I pictured Ralph and Bob lugging their electric guitars into our garage thirty minutes before. This all started a few months ago when we invited our neighbours over for a barbecue. The men started reminiscing about the fact that they had all dreamt of being rock stars when they were young and not the 50 years olds they currently were! Bob had actually had some experience playing guitar in a high school band and his brother Nigel, the accountant, had gone so far as to play drums for a big band when he was in college. John, my husband, had always fancied himself as a keyboard player but although he had a good ear for a tune he had never played the piano. Paul, the local electrician, who had dropped by to fix our kitchen light socket, enthusiastically joined in the discussion informing everyone that he used to play the drums and he was great at karaoke as well Before any of the wives had a chance to raise objections, a band was borne and John had invited them all to practice in our garage.

  • Dance, Our Dearest Diversion
Dance, Our Dearest Diversion Introduction “Virginians are of genuine blood—they will dance or die.” This quotation from Philip Vickers Fithian’s journal in August 1774 explains just how important dancing was to the eighteenth- century Virginian. It was an integral and essential part of the social life of the time. Burgesses, tradesmen, farmers, and slaves all partook of this diversion. The gentry had more leisure time to take dance lessons and had opportunities to attend elegant balls at the Governor’s Palace, the Capitol, and each other’s homes. Dance was an important part of a young gentleman or lady’s education. Those of the middling and lesser sort had less time and money to devote to lessons or formal gatherings, but nonetheless enjoyed stepping what dances they knew or learning new ones they had seen. Slaves got together for “gatherings” where they shared conversation, made music with what instruments they had available or could make, and danced in a style brought from Africa. People often learned to dance by imitating what they saw others do. Parents taught their children, and those who could afford the expense could hire a tutor to teach them the latest dances. Dancing manuals were also available for purchase. An aspiring tradesman or up-and-coming farmer might invest in dance instruction for himself and his family in hopes of obtaining a necessary sign of social grace. Dance was considered an important part of a gentry child’s education, and children were placed under the instruction of a master, either male or female, during the pre-teen years.
