Wrawby Walking Group

Puddles, mud, glorious sunshine, snow, ice…….. we’ve enjoyed whatever weather has been thrown our way on a Monday morning to join together in our 3-4 mile walk. We possibly missed one morning through atrocious weather conditions but…..we’re a hardy lot and keep going!! Walks have been at Barton by the river, through fields, up on the Wolds, the streets of Kirton Lindsey, getting lost in Atkinson’s Warren (it really is a warren!!) amongst many others. That’s the variety of adventure we set off for at 10am on a Monday. “A great way to start the week” many say. Not only are we getting exercise and fresh air but lots of chatter goes on too!! Refreshment is enjoyed in one of the many cafes or pubs around. Unfortunately quite a few are closed on a Monday but we always find somewhere to have a well earned relaxation for a while afterwards. Some people go home and have a snooze in the afternoon, others energised, that’s the diversity of us!!! One big enjoyment is……..turn up if you want to walk. No fuss, no charge and if you’re not there 10.05 ish we go – simple as that and it works really, really well. Our Christmas Meal is around the corner, eat, drink and be merry but…oh yes, we’ll walk first!!! No slacking because it’s Christmas!!

Wrawby Methodist Afternoon Tea Wrawby Methodist’s would like to thank everyone who turned up to support their ‘Afternoon Tea’ at the Village Hall in November. A fabulous total of over £600 was raised. All who attended were treated to homemade savouries, sandwiches and cakes and there was plenty of tea and coffee served. There have been so many positive comments made about the afternoon, with villagers saying what a lovely relaxed atmosphere there was and so many visitors from outside the village saying how friendly everyone was and how welcomed they felt. A huge thanks to all who supported in any way!

He is survived by wife Glenda and children Richard and Claire, grandchildren and great grandchildren. There will be a Cremation in Hampshire followed by a Memorial Service on January 15th at 11.30 a.m. at St Peter at Gowts, Lincoln. Fr David Baker was born in 1935, and gained a B.A. degree in Theology from the University of Wales (Lampeter) in 1959. After training for the priesthood at Ely Theological College (1959-61) he was ordained Deacon in 1961 and Priest in 1962 by the Bishop of Lincoln, and spent his whole active ministry in this diocese. He then undertook his first incumbency in 1969 as Vicar of St Mary’s Wrawby, which from the following year was held in plurality with Melton Ross & New Barnetby. In 1978 he moved to become Vicar of St Peter-at-Gowts with St Andrew’s, Lincoln, and resigned his benefice in 1994 when the ordination of women to the priesthood was approved. Farewell to Father Owain Mitchell

Fr. Owain will be leaving the parish, after 14 years as the vicar in Wrawby. We will be very sad to see him go, after providing a strong Christian lead within the village. As well as the Church he has also had very strong links with the school. His time has seen his marriage to Claire as well as taking on responsibility for Bonby and Worlaby, to add to Brigg, Wrawby and Cadney-cum-Howsham. Fr Owains final service in the group of parishes will be on Sunday 29th December, at 9.30 a.m. at

St John’s, Brigg. All are welcome.

Fr Owain writes: I have had the great privilege of serving as Vicar of the United Benefice of Brigg, Wrawby and Cadney-cum-Howsham since December 2005. In December 2010, the Benefices of Bonby and Worlaby joined the group. Multi-parish ministry serving almost 13,000 souls has been exciting and fulfilling. I have been extremely happy here and I thank God for calling me to serve Him in this group. Over the years God has done much in, through and for us that has been positive and fruitful. However, it now feels that God is calling me on to new pastures and fresh challenges. I wish to thank all of you for your prayers, support and kindness. I thank you for welcoming me into your churches and wider communities, for loving me and being as Christ to me. I pray that I have been the same for each of you. Each of you have been invaluable to me in my ministry and I cannot thank you all enough. Any successes we have shared are largely a result of your ministry to me. I am deeply touched by the number of you who have spoken to me since the announcement of my new post, your kindness and the depth of feeling as you tell me you’ll miss me have been truly humbling. So many people have said that they are happy for me, but so sad for our churches and these six communities. I shall miss each and every one of you, too. I ask for your continued prayer for Claire and I and for the people of New Mills as we prepare to move on. God has great things planned for the Brigg group, and I shall be watching from afar with great excitement to see where He leads you in your next chapter. Please do be assured of my ongoing prayers in the years to come. With every blessing, Owain

My final service as Vicar of Brigg, Wrawby, Cadney-cum-Howsham, Bonby and Worlaby will be at our Group Eucharist on Sunday 29th December, 9.30 a.m. at Saint John the Evangelist, Brigg All are welcome Please do join us as we celebrate all that has been good in our time together and say farewell.

Please pray for me, and for the people of New Mills, as I prepare to be instituted as Vicar of New Mills, in the Diocese of Derby, on Thursday 6th February 2020 at 7 pm at St George’s, New Mills by the Bishop of Derby and inducted by the Archdeacon of Chesterfield.

Please remember to send any items you want including in the February 2019 edition to [email protected] by the deadline date of 18th January 2019.

10 Thought for the Month

Dear friends, As I begin to write this in the cosy comfort of my own home, looking out of the window I notice that the sky is lit up with rockets and fireworks of all descriptions….all to celebrate bonfire night and the life of Guy Fawkes, better known in his day 1570-1606 as Guido, and now famously remembered for trying to blow up Parliament. Now the fireworks have stopped and the bonfires extinguished…. this man is soon forgotten. As I go around the stores I see preparations for another special event in full swing. Cards, decorations, sumptuous food and gifts bedeck all the displays. Santa is making a visit to gather orders for special gifts for the children, and members of our churches are busy rehearsing for Christmas celebrations.

The other day I came across a story which I would like to share with you. A young woman was shopping with her two children. After many hours of walking down row after row of toys and gifts in a department store, and after hearing both of them asking for everything they saw on those tempting shelves, she finally made it to the lift with her children in tow. She was feeling the way so many of us feel as Christmas approaches…….concerned about trying to find that perfect gift for every single person on our shopping list, feeling the overwhelming pressure to go to every event, as well as prepare all the holiday food and treats, and not forget anyone on our Christmas card list. Finally, the lift doors opened revealing the inside packed with shoppers. She pushed her way in dragging her children and all her shopping bags with her. As the doors closed she couldn’t take it any longer and blurted out……… “Whoever started this whole Christmas thing should be strung up and hanged!” From the back of the lift a quiet calm voice responded, “Don’t worry we’ve already crucified him.” The rest of the ride down in the lift was so quiet that you could have heard a pin drop.

Unlike Guy Fawkes we see the evidence of Jesus in our every day lives. In kind actions and deeds carried out in our communities, in the support we receive from others during particularly difficult times, in our Church services and community events where sharing and caring are a central part. The life of Jesus has stood the test of time, has overcome world wars and conflicts, and culminates in the greatest birthday celebration of all.

This year as we go about our Christmas preparations let us keep “the One who started this whole Christmas thing” in our every thought, deed, purchase and word. I hope that you all find joy, peace and happiness as you celebrate this special time with friends and family, and wish you good health for the forthcoming year.

E. Barrie Leah .
