THE MAYBERRYS OF LANCASHIRE AND LONDONDERRY

DESCENDANTS OF RICHARD AND ANNE MAYBERRY OF CHURCHTOWN, LANCASHIRE

For these reasons it is not possible to compile a comprehensive chart of this family. However, we can offer a limited chart representing the earliest generations. This chart shows the nine children born to Richard and Anne Mayberry of Churchtown, Lancashire together with a few of the descendants of the six who lived to maturity. Our chart begins with the assumption that Richard Mayberry of Churchtown was a son of Nicholas and Marye Maybury, both of whom are buried at Whittington, Shropshire. This assumption is based primarily on the naming patterns in the families of Nicholas and Richard. But that relationship has not been otherwise documented.

The number preceding each name is the generation number. Richard Mayberry is thus of the 3rd generation. His presumed father was Nicholas2 Maybury, whose father was John1 Maybury of Sussex.

3 - Richard Mayberry, hammerman, (?Nicholas2, John1) married 31 Jan 1626/27 Anne Wright at Cartmel Priory, Lancashire; bur 8 Aug 1643 at Cartmel Priory, Lancashire. 4 - John Mayberry, hammerman, bap 8 Jun 1628 at Cartmel Priory, Lancashire. In 1657 John was hired, along with a man named Hodgins, by the Mercer Company of London to produce iron near Kilrea in , Ireland. According to a deposition given by John’s son, Richard, in 1708, John died in Londonderry in 1677. Because of a gap in the local records we are uncertain whether or not John Mayberry had children other than Richard. Some of his descendants still live in Londonderry and Antrim, while others emigrated to America in the 18th and 19th centuries. We have no record which tells us the name of his wife or when he married. There is no will or other record to tell us anything about the state of his family when he died in 1677. And it is not until the year 1740 that we find any kind of systematic listing of residents in the Kilrea area. That is a list of Protestant householders in the parish of Tamlaght O’Crilly. This list reveals the fact that 63 years after John Mayberry’s death, there were only three of his descendants listed among the heads of household in the parish where he lived: James Maberry, John Maberry and Richd. Maberry. And because this list tells us nothing about the ages of the heads of household, we do not know whether James, John and Richard were John Mayberrys grandsons or his great grandsons. 5 - Richard Mayberry, forgeman, b after 1657 in County Londonderry, Ireland; he is very likely the Mayberry, mentioned in local histories to have been present at the siege of Londonderry in 1688/89. This is the Richard Mayberry whose deposition, written in 1708, provides us with information about his father, John Mayberry. ?6 - William Mayberry1, blacksmith, b ca 1688 in Antrim or Londonderry, Ireland; m 1714 Bathsheba Dennis; emigrated to America about 1730 with his wife and three children, where he lived for a time in at Marblehead, Massachusetts. In 1738 he bought land in Windham, Massachusetts where he built a garrison house. In 1820 this part of Massachusetts was cut off to form the new State of Maine. William died on 15 Mar 1764/65 in Windham, Massachusetts. (For the descendants of William Mayberry and Bathsheba Dennis, see our chapter on Later Emigrants to America and Australia)

1 We have placed a question mark before William’s name because we cannot be absolutely certain that he was a son of Richard. It is possible that Richard Mayberry had siblings, although we have found no record of them. At present, the lack of early records in Ireland makes it impossible to construct a chart of the first generations of the Mayberry family in Lon- donderry. It is only because of his 1708 deposition that we know that Richard5 Mayberry was a son of John4 Mayberry (1628-1677). While it seems likely that John4 Mayberry had other children, no record of them has apparently survived. Likewise, we only know about William6 May- berry and his relationship to the Londonderry family because of records found in Massachusetts where he migrated about 1730 with his wife, Bathsheba and their young family. Thus, Richard5 and William6 are the only two descendants of John4 that can be documented! Yet, we know that both must have had siblings. Otherwise there is no way to account for the Mayberrys who were still found in Londonderry and in Antrim two or three generations later. Therefore, it must be assumed that John Mayberry had children other than Richard. Likewise, it must be assumed that Richard had children other than his son, William, who went to America. Perhaps someday we will be fortunate enough to discover the names of these unknown children and grandchildren of John Mayberry who founded the family in Londonderry.

Our incomplete chart thus continues with the siblings of John Mayberry who remained behind when he left Lancashire for Ireland in 1657.

Nicholas was still living in Lindall in the Parish of Dalton in 1699, when he stated his age as "70 years" when he gave a deposition. 4 - Martin Mayberry, blacksmith, bap 7 Mar 1633/34 at Cartmel Priory, Lancashire; m Jun 1655 Ann Eyves (d/o Raph Eyves, shoemaker) at St. Johns, Preston, Lancashire. This is as far as we can document the known descendants of Richard and Anne Mayberry of Lancashire. However, there are other later branches of the family, especially in Londonderry, that have been traced back several generations but not quite far enough to tie them to one of the earliest Mayberrys in the chart above.
