CITY HALL — The future of Santa Monica became clearer this week when the City Council approved a set of overarching goals that will drive development and the use of open space for the next 25 years. Still, there were few surprises. In a series of community meetings, sur- veys and forums held over the past couple of years, roughly 5,000 Santa Monicans reaf- firmed their preferences for a city that main- tains its current scale and density, with a focus on creating more environmentally- sensitive modes of transportation that limit traffic congestion. There was also a call for more housing that can cater to an economically-diverse community and link residents to goods and services. The preservation of historic struc- tures, and maintaining the local identity by properly managing regional pressures were also identified. Apparently, Santa Monicans want it all. The only problems is they can’t have it. PROUDLY BROUGHT TO YOU BY

For the past 27 years, residents of Santa Monica have lived with their city being jokingly referred to as “The People’s Republic of Santa Monica,” a name bestowed on our home- town by opponents of Rent Control legislation pushed through in the late 1970s. The name stuck, literally, via a popular bumper sticker, and gained national notoriety when Ronald Reagan took his conservative views all the way from nearby Pacific Palisades to the White House. But many feel the moniker is outdated. So, this week’s Q-Line question asks: Given the state and direction of Santa Monica today, what would be a fitting nickname for the city, worthy of a bumper sticker? Explain. Call (310) 285-8106 before Friday at 5 p.m. and we’ll print your answers in next weekend’s edition of the Daily Press. Please limit responses to a minute or less. © 2006 Janric Enterprises Dist. by Creators Syndicate Inc. GETTING STARTED There are many strategies to solving Sudoku.
