NETHERLANDS v ITALY MATCH PRESS KIT Municipal, Aveiro Monday, 29 May 2006 - 19:45 local time Final tournament - Group phase Group B - Matchday 6 For two countries with rich heritage at all levels, it is perhaps surprising that when the Netherlands and Italy come face to face in the third and final round of Group B matches at the UEFA European Under-21 Championship, it will be their first competitive meeting. Italy sit top of the group with four points thanks to Giorgio Chiellini's added-time winner against Ukraine which followed their similarly dramatic 3-3 draw with Denmark. The Netherlands are still looking for their first victory after losing to Ukraine then drawing with Denmark, and must win to advance. • The countries have rarely come into opposition at youth level either, although when they have crossed paths it has invariably been a close contest. At the 2005 European U17 Championship hosts Italy won through to a semi-final against the Dutch but home advantage proved irrelevant on this occasion with Melvin Zaalman getting the only goal for the Netherlands in extra time. Italy had had the better of their four meetings at U16 level with three victories including a 6-1 triumph in the 1990 qualifying round and edged out the Dutch on penalties to reach the U18 finals in 1998/99, when they went on to the final before losing to Portugal. • At senior level perhaps their most significant meeting was in the semi-finals of UEFA EURO 2000™ when, on home soil, the Dutch missed two penalties in normal time against ten-man Italy with Frank de Boer and Patrick Kluivert both failing from the spot.

  • Statistical Assessment of Soccer Players
Statistical Assessment of Soccer Players by Mohammad-Amin Nabavi A thesis submitted to the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Affairs in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree Master of Science in Mathematics and Statistics Carleton University Ottawa, Ontario © 2019 Mohammad-Amin Nabavi ABSTRACT This thesis examines the use of neural network modelling and ordinal logistic regression on a single season of data (2015-16) to score or rank soccer players. These scores and ranks are then compared with ones from FIFA EASports that are based on a much more extensive data set that includes more variables as well as historical data. Using repeated measures one-way ANOVA and subsequent multiple comparison testing, we conclude that a neural network model with ten nodes in one hidden layer is able to generate scores statistically similar to FIFA EASports, while ordinal logistic regression cannot. We confirm this result be also examining the ranks obtained by both the neural network model and the ordinal logistic regression model. Spearman rank correlations are also examined and confirm that a neural network with 10 nodes in one hidden layer also generates ranks statistically similar to FIFA EASports. We also demonstrate the use of association rule mining on one team’s data from the 2015-16 season to identify players and combinations thereof that are associated with winning (or not winning) a match. Analyses are based on data from the Italian Serie A League 2015-2016 season. ii Acknowledgements These past couple of years have proven to be the hardest period of my life so far.

La Romareda Stadium, Zaragoza 21/10/2004 20:45:00 (Local Time) UEFA Cup Group C, Matchday 1 Real Zaragoza v FC Utrecht MATCH OFFICIALS Referee Peter Sippel (GER) Assistant Referee Volker Wezel (GER) Assistant Referee Roland Greth (GER) Fourth Referee Hermann Albrecht (GER) UEFA Delegate Dusan Maravic (YUG) Referee Observer Walter Clarke (NIR) Reporter Javier Bielsa (ESP) MATCH BACKGROUND The 2003/04 domestic cup winners of Spain and the Netherlands meet for the first time in UEFA club competitions when Real Zaragoza host FC Utrecht on the opening matchday of the 2004/05 UEFA Cup group stage. Fourth encounter The match will be the fourth time that Zaragoza have been in opposition against clubs from the Netherlands. In the 1986/87 Cup Winners’ Cup semi-final Zaragoza lost the home leg to AFC Ajax 3-2, and 3-0 at Amsterdam, as Ajax went on to win the competition. Then in the 1994/95 season, Zaragoza met two Dutch clubs. They played Feyenoord in the quarter-finals of the Cup Winners’ Cup and, after Henrik Larsson had scored the only goal for the home side at Rotterdam, Zaragoza eventually won 2-1 on aggregate, and went on to win the tournament with Nayim’s spectacular shot in the 2-1 win against Arsenal FC. Super Cup defeat As Cup Winners’ Cup holders, Zaragoza then met UEFA Champions League winners AFC Ajax in the UEFA Super Cup, played over two legs in Februray 1996. The teams drew 1-1 at La Romareda, but Ajax proved too strong in the return leg with a 4-0 win after Danny Blind had notched a couple of late penalties.
