Based on the assumption that televised sport is a gendered and predominantly masculine genre, the focus of this analysis is to demonstrate whether or not professional male athletes are evaluated differently based on physical stature, and whether or not such representations reinforce a dominant—mythic—male ideology. Grounded mainly in Gramscian hegemony and Peircean semiotics, the subsequent analysis compares broadcast commentary and visuals taken from the 2010 men‘s Olympic ice hockey tournament and the 2010 men‘s FIFA World Cup. In both events, it was generally found that taller athletes were praised more positively than smaller athletes. These findings appear to support common sports-related stereotypes, such as, the apparent media-reinforced expectation that professional male athletes be almost inhuman, mythical representations of ordinary men, i.e., the best athletes should be large, intimidating, aggressive, and hyper-masculine symbols. iii Résumé Cette étude analyse comment les athlètes professionnels masculins — notamment, les athlètes de petite stature — sont représentés dans le sport télévisé. To my family, friends, and former teachers. Thank you for helping me grow v Acknowledgments I would like to express my gratitude to my supervisor, Dr. Fernando Andacht, whose expertise, understanding, and patience, added considerably to my graduate experience. If not for his advice and assistance this thesis would have never come to fruition. I would also like to thank the other members of my committee, Dr. Mark Lowes and Dr. Isaac Nahon-Serfaty, for their contributions at all levels of the research project. Finally, I would like to thank the University of Ottawa for giving me this opportunity to pursue a Master of Arts in Communication and for exposing me to such a wonderfully talented and supportive community of faculty and staff. I would also like to thank my family for the support they provided me through my entire life and in particular, I must acknowledge my parents, James and Loretta, without whose love, encouragement and direction, I would not have finished this thesis. Many thanks also go to my older brother, Andrew, for paving the way and for being a positive role model in my life, and to my younger siblings, John and Jodi, for their tolerance throughout the long months of this research and for pushing me forward. Lastly, I wish to extend my deepest gratitude to all my friends for helping me through the difficult times, and for all the emotional support, encouragement, camaraderie, and wisdom they provided throughout the long and arduous process of thesis-writing. I would especially like to thank my good friend, Shea Laughlin, and the entire Ruckus Crew, for their calming words and shared laughter when the stresses of graduate school became too much. This process of writing has been one of the most challenging emotional and intellectual journeys I have ever embarked on, but their friendship has shown me that I was never alone. They are the best sailors in the entire world! vi Table of contents Introduction ......................................................................................................................................1 Literature review ..............................................................................................................................8 On ideology ...............................................................................................................................10 Media, sport, and race ..........................................................................................................13 Media, sport, and gender ......................................................................................................16 Too small to make it: Heightism and sport ..........................................................................19 On myth: The mythology of tallness .........................................................................................27 Mythologies and sport ..........................................................................................................31 Methodology ..................................................................................................................................34 Semiotics: Comparing dyadic and triadic models .....................................................................35 On icons, indices, and symbols .................................................................................................38 On representation ......................................................................................................................40 Application ................................................................................................................................43 Results and analysis .......................................................................................................................46 Feminization ..............................................................................................................................55 Not-so-nice nicknames ..............................................................................................................57 Infantilization ............................................................................................................................60 Aggrandization ..........................................................................................................................62 Giants ........................................................................................................................................65 Growth .......................................................................................................................................67 Height marking ..........................................................................................................................69

NETHERLANDS v ITALY MATCH PRESS KIT Municipal, Aveiro Monday, 29 May 2006 - 19:45 local time Final tournament - Group phase Group B - Matchday 6 For two countries with rich heritage at all levels, it is perhaps surprising that when the Netherlands and Italy come face to face in the third and final round of Group B matches at the UEFA European Under-21 Championship, it will be their first competitive meeting. Italy sit top of the group with four points thanks to Giorgio Chiellini's added-time winner against Ukraine which followed their similarly dramatic 3-3 draw with Denmark. The Netherlands are still looking for their first victory after losing to Ukraine then drawing with Denmark, and must win to advance. • The countries have rarely come into opposition at youth level either, although when they have crossed paths it has invariably been a close contest. At the 2005 European U17 Championship hosts Italy won through to a semi-final against the Dutch but home advantage proved irrelevant on this occasion with Melvin Zaalman getting the only goal for the Netherlands in extra time. Italy had had the better of their four meetings at U16 level with three victories including a 6-1 triumph in the 1990 qualifying round and edged out the Dutch on penalties to reach the U18 finals in 1998/99, when they went on to the final before losing to Portugal. • At senior level perhaps their most significant meeting was in the semi-finals of UEFA EURO 2000™ when, on home soil, the Dutch missed two penalties in normal time against ten-man Italy with Frank de Boer and Patrick Kluivert both failing from the spot.

“It is about the flag on your chest!” Footballers with Migration Background in the German National Football Team. A matter of inclusion? An Explorative Case Study on Nationalism, Integration and National Identity. Oscar Brito Capon Master Thesis in Sociology Department of Sociology and Human Geography Faculty of Social Sciences University of Oslo June 2012 Oscar Brito Capon - Master Thesis in Sociology 2 Oscar Brito Capon - Master Thesis in Sociology Foreword Dear reader, the present research work represents, on one hand, my dearest wish to contribute to the understanding of some of the effects that the exclusionary, ethnocentric notions of nationhood and national belonging – which have characterized much of western European thinking throughout history – have had on individuals who do not fit within the preconceived frames of national unity and belonging with which most Europeans have been operating since the foundation of the nation-state approximately 140 years ago. On the other hand, this research also represents my personal journey to understand better my role as a citizen, a man, a father and a husband, while covered by a given aura of otherness, always reminding me of my permanent foreignness in the country I decided to make my home. In this sense, this has been a personal journey to learn how to cope with my new ascribed identity as an alien (my ‘labelled forehead’) without losing my essence in the process, and without forgetting who I also am and have been. This journey has been long and tough in many forms, for which I would like to thank the help I have received from those who have been accompanying my steps all along.

  • BMO Management Strategies of Football Clubs in the Dutch Eredivisie
BSc-Thesis – BMO Management strategies of football clubs in the Dutch Eredivisie Name Student: Mylan Pouwels Registration Number: 991110669120 University: Wageningen University & Research (WUR) Study: BBC (Business) Thesis Mentor: Jos Bijman Date: 1-23-2020 Chair Group: BMO Course Code: YSS-81812 Foreword From an early age I already like football. I like it to play football by myself, to watch it on television, but also to read articles about football. The opportunity to combine my love for football with a scientific research for my Bachelor Thesis, could not be better for me. During an orientating conversation about the topic for my Bachelor Thesis with my thesis mentor Jos Bijman, I mentioned that I was always interested in the management strategies of organizations. What kind of choices an organization makes, what kind of resources an organization uses, what an organization wants to achieve and its performances. Following closely this process in large organizations is something I like to do in my leisure time. My thesis mentor Jos Bijman asked for my hobbies and he mentioned that there was a possibility to combine my interests in the management strategies of organizations with my main hobby football. In this way the topic Management strategies of football clubs in the Dutch Eredivisie was created. The Bachelor Thesis Management strategies of football clubs in the Dutch Eredivisie is executed in a qualitative research, using a literature study. This Thesis is written in the context of my graduation of the study Business-and Consumer Studies (specialization Business) at the Wageningen University and Research. From October 28 2019 until January 23 I have been working on the research and writing of my Thesis.

  • Dobber's 2010-11 Fantasy Guide
DOBBER’S 2010-11 FANTASY GUIDE DOBBERHOCKEY.COM – HOME OF THE TOP 300 FANTASY PLAYERS I think we’re at the point in the fantasy hockey universe where DobberHockey.com is either known in a fantasy league, or the GM’s are sleeping. Besides my column in The Hockey News’ Ultimate Pool Guide, and my contributions to this year’s Score Forecaster (fifth year doing each), I put an ad in McKeen’s. That covers the big three hockey pool magazines and you should have at least one of them as part of your draft prep. The other thing you need, of course, is this Guide right here. It is not only updated throughout the summer, but I also make sure that the features/tidbits found in here are unique. I know what’s in the print mags and I have always tried to set this Guide apart from them. Once again, this is an automatic download – just pick it up in your downloads section. Look for one or two updates in August, then one or two updates between September 1st and 14th. After that, when training camp is in full swing, I will be updating every two or three days right into October. Make sure you download the latest prior to heading into your draft (and don’t ask me on one day if I’ll be updating the next day – I get so many of those that I am unable to answer them all, just download as late as you can). Any updates beyond this original release will be in bold blue.
