Rare Feathers Volume 2 Issue 1 NEWSLETTER December 2007 2007 Sally Dakis, our club Patron ( middle) with President, Bill Hyndes (right) and club Secretary, Deanne Lance. Sally opened the show with a passionate speech on the long history of domestic livestock breeds and the dangers of losing them for- ever in today's commercially driven world. It was a pleasure to have Sally open our inaugural show. Our two judges did a terrific job, working their way through 400 plus entries on the day. Peter Spotswood from Tasmania (left) judged hard feather and waterfowl and George Norman from Victoria (right) judged Soft-feather. Peter is holding the Champion Rare Variety of show with a OEG black bantam exhibited by Brian Bennett and George Nor- man is holding the Champion Rare Breed of show a Japa- nese bantam exhibited by Eian Raynor. Brian Bennett’s Black OEG bantam later went on to win Champion bird of show. Reserve Champion Junior of show. A bronze turkey exhibited by Codie Rosendale. The Club is a healthy one-year old. Not only have we survived through our first year as a Club, but I believe we have thrived as the focus for a group of people that are passionate about breeding, preserving and promoting rare breeds of poultry. On a personal level, being part of the Club has encouraged me to take up a couple of tricky but rewarding breeds, including Phoenix. These are my first ventures into game-type breeds and a (slight) contrast to my beloved Barbu d’Uccle! The Club’s inaugural Annual Show was a huge success, and competition was fierce. Whether your bird was up the front, nearly got there or was carded we can all be proud of the show. The level of public and media interest in what we are doing took me completely by surprise, and reinforces the need for a club such as ours. The other thing that has surprised me is the growth in membership. While we had always set out to be a state-wide club there are now significant member numbers in the North and North-West of the State. I hope you all have yards full of young birds ready for 2008. EXCHANGES If you want birds, or have birds for sale or exchange, contact the exchange steward.
