click for previous page 952 Shrimps and Prawns Sicyoniidae SICYONIIDAE Rock shrimps iagnostic characters: Body generally Drobust, with shell very hard, of “stony” grooves appearance; abdomen often with deep grooves and numerous tubercles. Rostrum well developed and extending beyond eyes, always bearing more than 3 upper teeth (in- cluding those on carapace); base of eyestalk with styliform projection on inner surface, but without tubercle on inner border. Both upper and lower antennular flagella of similar length, attached to tip of antennular peduncle. 1 Carapace lacks both postorbital and postantennal spines, cervical groove in- distinct or absent. Exopod present only on first maxilliped. All 5 pairs of legs well devel- 2 oped, fourth leg bearing a single well-devel- 3rd and 4th pleopods 4 single-branched oped arthrobranch (hidden beneath 3 carapace). In males, endopod of second pair 5 of pleopods (abdominal appendages) with appendix masculina only. Third and fourth pleopods single-branched. Telson generally armed with a pair of fixed lateral spines. Colour: body colour varies from dark brown to reddish; often with distinct spots or colour markings on carapace and/or abdomen - such colour markings are specific and very useful in distinguishing the species. Habitat, biology, and fisheries: All members of this family are marine and can be found from shallow to deep waters (to depths of more than 400 m). They are all benthic and occur on both soft and hard bottoms. Their sizes are generally small, about 2 to 8 cm, but some species can reach a body length over 15 cm. The sexes are easily distinguished by the presence of a large copulatory organ (petasma) on the first pair of pleopods of males, while the females have the posterior thoracic sternites modified into a large sperm receptacle process (thelycum) which holds the spermatophores or sperm sacs (usually whitish or yellowish in colour) after mating. -

However, no caridean shrimp has been discovered so far in the world. The shrimp Palaemon aestuarius sp. nov. (Palaemonidae) preserved in amber from Chiapas, Mexico during Early Miocene (ca. 22.8 Ma) represents the frst and the oldest amber caridean species. This fnding suggests that the genus Palaemon has occupied Mexico at least since Early Miocene. In addition, the coexistence of the shrimp, a beetle larva, and a piece of residual leaf in the same amber supports the previous explanations for the Mexican amber depositional environment, in the tide-infuenced mangrove estuary region. Palaemonidae Rafnesque, 1815 is the largest shrimp family within the Caridea, with world-wide distribution1. It is now widely believed that it originated from the marine environment in the indo-western Pacifc warm waters, and has successfully adapted to non-marine environments, such as estuaries and limnic environments2–4. Palaemon Weber, 1795 is the second most species-rich genus besides the Macrobrachium Spence Bate, 1868 in the Palaemonidae4–6. Te 87 extant species of Palaemon are found in various habitats, such as marine, brackish and freshwater7,8. -

Anew species of caridean shrimp, Gnathophyllum taylori sp.nov., is described from south-eastern Australia. The new species most closely resembles two Atlantic species, G. modestum Hay, 1917, and G. elegans Risso, 1816, but is readily distinguished by its banded rather than spotted body colour pattern. Gnathophyllum taylori is the third Indo-West Pacific species to be recognised. It differs from G. americanum, with which it can be sympatric, by having fewer and narrower dark bands on the body as well as by the rostral dentition, morphology of the orbit and dactyli of the walking legs. The identity of G. fasciolatum Stimpson, 1860, a junior synonym of G. americanum, is fixed by neotype selection. Athanas nitescens (Leach, 1813) (Alpheidae), an invasive species from the eastern Atlantic fi rst reported from São Paulo in 2012 based on a single male, is now confi rmed to have 93 established populations in Brazil with the fi nding of ovigerous females on the coast of (2) Rio de Janeiro. Zoosystema 30 (4) : 781-794. ABSTRACT Two species of the alpheid shrimp genus Leptalpheus Williams, 1965 are reported from the southwestern Caribbean Sea. Leptalpheus pierrenoeli n. sp. is described on the basis of a single male specimen collected from a burrow of unknown, presumably callianassid host on Isla Grande, Panama. Th is species diff ers from all other species of Leptalpheus by the dentition on the fi ngers of the major KEY WORDS cheliped and the elongate stylocerite. Leptalpheus cf. forceps is recorded for the Crustacea, fi rst time from Cahuita, Costa Rica, representing a considerable range extension Decapoda, of L. forceps Williams, 1965, previously known from North Carolina to the Alpheidae, Leptalpheus, Gulf of Mexico, into the southern Caribbean Sea. Read Full License Page 1/19 Abstract Background The export of shrimp to the European Union was one of the mainstays of the Beninese economy. It is an income-generating activity for the populations living along lake Nokoué. The lack of a sheries management strategy has caused a drastic decline in shrimp production in lake Nokoué since 2003. To remedy this problem, it is necessary to hypothesize on their spatio-temporal dynamics in the lake Nokoué-Cotonou channel complex. This is investigated by combining a literature review on their life cycles and habitat suitability with spatio-temporal evolution of salinity obtained from in-situ observations. Results The literature review recognizes the presence in southern Benin of species of the genus Macrobrachium, Atya and Desmocaris (seven, two and one respectively) and ve species of marine shrimps belonging to three genera: the genus Penaeus, the genus Holthuispenaeopsis and the genus Parapenaeus. -

The survey was conducted in 3 sites during 3 temporal seasons. A total of 2,989 specimens were collected belonging to 12 species, 6 genera, and to the following 4 families: Alpheidae, Hippolytidae, Palaemonidae, and Processidae. Hippolytidae was the most abundant family, followed by Palaemonidae, Alpheidae, and Processidae. The hippolytid Hippolyte obliquimanus Dana, 1852, the palaemonids Palaemon floridanus Chace, 1942, and P. northropi (Rankin, 1898), and the alpheid Alpheus cf. packardii Kingsley, 1880 represent new records for the Laguna Madre and selected areas of the Gulf of Mexico. -
