NLA Newsleather November 2020
Issue 5: November 2020 NewsLeather Leather: It’s who you are, not what you wear NLA-Dallas is about Education * Activism * Community A Review of BV Online Attendees at Beyond Vanilla Online on October 3, 2020, were treated to a smorgasbord of kinky information and fun conversation. A couple of classes had wow moments that got us excited and ready for more. Master TC ended his Negotiation class with a demo that left us all reaching for our fans and praying to our gods the scene actually happens when we are nearby, and Doctor Bubbles and KitKat Ann’s look at Fear Play culminated with a surprise mini scene that clearly demonstrated the difference between surprise and suspense. Beginning our journey in exploring the gender spectrum, Maverick introduced us to some of their friends who showed us unequivocally that one’s parts do not always define one’s gender and that assumptions based on appearances can be way off base. Lee Harrington’s thought provoking exploration of Intentional Relationship Design was interwoven with his signature melange of spiritual appreciation and pragmatic application. Throughout the day, classes alternated with pre-recorded videos to keep the educational opportunities going. Butterscotch’s enthusiasm for tea service shined brightly as she walked us through her take on tea. Ursus’ demonstration of a bar shine gave us a glimpse into the world of the bootblacking, offering something for those interested in being a bootblack, as well as those who seek out their service. Fred illuminated the world of cigars and cigar service for attendees, information that was later put to good use at the post-event hybrid virtual and in-person Beyond Vanilla After Dark. -
Tinder-Ing Desire: the Circuit of Culture, Gamified Dating and Creating Desirable Selves
Tinder-ing Desire: The Circuit of Culture, Gamified Dating and Creating Desirable Selves Tanya F. Oishi A dissertation submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy University of Washington 2019 Reading Committee: LeiLani Nishime, Chair Ralina Joseph Carmen Gonzalez Program Authorized to Offer Degree Communication 2 ©Copyright 2019 Tanya F. Oishi 3 University of Washington Abstract Tinder-ing Desire: Tanya F. Oishi Chair of the Supervisory Committee: LeiLani Nishime Communication This dissertation starts at intersection of race, gender, and technology, all of which will be discussed in depth throughout this project, and the fluid state of being constituted and being undone by one another. It is in this state of vulnerability that relationships are initiated, through technology that these relationships are shaped and facilitated, and within the constraints of social expectations that these interactions are able/allowed to occur (Duck, 2011). As life becomes more mediated and interactions more facilitated through technological means, focusing on relationships facilitated through dating apps is illustrative of the ways in which mobile technologies are changing the way we communicate with one another. The introduction provides the theoretical overview of the literature off of which the rest of the dissertation builds its arguments: the importance of interpersonal connections, the positionality of Asian men in the U.S., and the mutual shaping of society and technology, as well 4 as a justification for a mixed methodological approach to these areas of inquiry. The second chapter looks at the subreddit r/Tinder Profile Review Week thread to see how individuals seek feedback on creating a desirable self and describes how these impression management strategies of Asian men differ from the group which is comprised predominantly by white men. -

Bdsm, Kink, and Consent: What the Law Can Learn from Consent-Driven Communities
BDSM, KINK, AND CONSENT: WHAT THE LAW CAN LEARN FROM CONSENT-DRIVEN COMMUNITIES Mika Galilee-Belfer* Millions of Americans participate in consensual, mutually agreed-upon activities such as bondage, dominance, and submission—collectively referred to as BDSM or kink—yet the relationship between individual consent to such participation and consent as legally understood and defined is imperfect at best. Because the law has not proven adept at adjudicating disputes that arise in BDSM situations, communities that practice BDSM have adopted self-policing mechanisms (formal and informal) aimed at replicating and even advancing the goals and protections of conventional law enforcement. This self-policing is particularly important because many jurisdictions hold there can be no consent to the kind of experiences often associated with BDSM; this is true in practice irrespective of the existence of statutory language regarding consent. In this Note, I compare legal communities and BDSM communities across three variables: how consent is defined, how violations are comparably adjudicated, and the types of remedies available by domain. In the process, I examine what norm-setting and rule adjudication look like when alternative communities choose to define, and then operate within, norms and controls that must be extra-legal by both necessity and design. Evil Habits: New Zealand's Anti-Masturbation Fervour, 1860S
New Zealand Journal of History, 50, 1 (2016) Evil Habits NEW ZEALAND’S ANTI-MASTURBATION FERVOUR, 1860s–1960s1 IN DUNEDIN IN 1883, SEVEN-YEAR-OLD JOSEPH WAIN DIED. His parents had beaten him, tied his hands to his back and confined him to his bedroom without food, drink or a source of heat. At the inquest Dr Hocken explained that ‘this little boy was given to an evil habit, and that the correction was administered to cure him’. In desperation Joseph’s father had approached Dr Isaiah De Zouche in the hope of having Joseph circumcised to stop the ‘evil habit’.2 ‘Evil habit’ was a euphemism for masturbation, a term indicating ‘self-stimulation which is deliberate and designed to effect erotic arousal’.3 The post mortem revealed that Joseph had a fractured arm, but had died from tuberculosis. There had been irritation in the bladder and he had probably passed a kidney stone.4 Joseph was simply trying to gain relief, yet his parents interpreted his actions as autoerotic and therefore masturbatory – a commonly made parental and medical error when dealing with prepubertal boys during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Why did Joseph’s parents so vehemently fear masturbation? The answer lay in a blend of Judeo- Christian religious dogma and nineteenth-century mainstream medicine and quackery, both of which fed off an inheritance of the eighteenth century’s erroneous comprehension of male sexuality.5 Historians have provided various accounts of the rise and fall of masturbation anxiety. Jean Stengers and Anne Van Neck have given an overview -

Through a selection of Internet Meme case studies, a list of cultural qualities are compiled and then used to identify the attitudes of Internet Meme Culture. Then by comparing the relationship between Internet Memes and advertising, film, and television, a contrast between Old and New Media is established. Alongside using political Memes to find connections between Internet Memes and general expression and communication, the final hope is to understand Internet Meme Culture and where it might take Mass and Popular Culture as the digital millennial becomes the new digital citizens. iv TABLE OF CONTENTS 1.0 INTRODUCTION: WHY STUDY INTERNET MEMES? ............................................. 1 1.1 WEB 3.33333333… AND BRONIES ...................................................................... -

Members of the kinky community welcomed me with all my quirks and were patient with my incessant questions. I will always value their strength and kindness. Members of the kinky community dared me to be fully present as a complete person rather than relying on just being a researcher. They stretched my imagination and did not let my theories go uncontested. Lively debates and embodied practices forced me to consider the many paths to truth. As every anthropologist before me, I have learned about both the universality and particularity of human experience. I am amazed. For the sake of confidentiality, I cannot mention specific people or groups, but I hope they know who they are and how much this has meant to me. -

DIGITAL EDITION Let me take this opportunity of answering a question that has often been asked me, how to pronounce “slithy toves.” The “i” in “slithy” is long, as in “writhe”; and “toves” is pronounced so as to rhyme with “groves.” Again, the first “o” in “borogoves” is pronounced like the “o” in “borrow.” I have heard people try to give it the sound of the “o” in “worry.” Such is Human Perversity. — Lewis Carroll, Preface, The Hunting of the Snark When I created PervScan, I had the idea to use the web site as a chronicle and compendium of perverse behav- ior — a living, breathing psychopathia sexualis.
