THE WORKING CONDITIONS

There is a preconception that Aussies are a pretty lazy bunch and while that label may apply to some ‘tradies’, it certainly doesn’t apply to my local government working colleagues, especially those in IT, who always seem to be under resourced. My new job role and employment package is pretty similar to previous in 21 Wellington, but there are subtle differences, the best of which is a Rostered Day Off, which you can take every three weeks in addition to your annual leave - great for creating long weekends. The same can-do attitude common in New Zealand also applies, but this is sometimes offset by lengthy inflexible bureaucratic processes involving lots of form filling. Elaine has been very frustrated by the failure of the Queensland Education Authority to recognise her Open University Teacher Aide Certificate obtained in New Zealand, without which it is very difficult for her to continue with the special needs support work for children that she was previously involved with. I feel rather more in the public spotlight these days having to wear a council ‘uniform’, but the clothing allowance is very generous and the quality of the garments is excellent.

THE ECONOMY

Bundaberg is not a prosperous area, suffers from relatively high unemployment and local businesses have been hit hard by the recent flooding, the most recent of which was the worst event recorded in 100 years. Combine this with the recent global 1 Banbury St, financial downturn, which has probably hit Australia harder than New Zealand and 01926-641741 [email protected] the picture may not appear very rosy. THE NATIVES

Without doubt New Zealanders are right up there with the Irish as one of the most friendly nations on earth, so it was always going to be tough act for the Aussies to follow after spending seven years in Kiwi company. Or are we in fact Kiwis ourselves having gained citizenship in 2012? Most definitely, if listening to our daughter Helena’s accent these days! A large number of Kiwis have made the switch across the ditch in search of a better lifestyle and this seems to have led to a certain degree of resentment, especially as New Zealanders to a man will keep their home town sporting allegiances and also often return to Aotearoa after a few years without really integrating in to the local society. So in true diplomatic fashion we often refer 01295 730544 to ourselves as Poms and subsequently take much stick about their current bunch of woeful cricketers firmly on the chin. We are firmly outnumbered in the Bundaberg area by South Africans who are attracted by the similar climate but far safer environment than their homeland. However, like ourselves, they often come in A picturesque pub restaurant for families, couples friends, through the ‘back door’ on Kiwi passports, after initially taking the more accessible wedding parties, a relaxing pint, a spot of lunch, something route of migrating to New Zealand. The Village Hall continues to provide a facility for the residents of Shotteswell and surrounding areas. We now have a fully refurbished kitchen thanks to a £7500 grant from the Big Lottery Fund. New wall and floor mounted units and worktops have been installed plus two new sinks with modern water heaters. The kitchen also had a complete rewire and electricity meters were boxed in. Heating is now provided via a plinth heater which the ladies have very much warmed to. The kitchen was fully decorated and plans were in hand to install secondary glazing. However this had to be put on hold when it was discovered that the large SE facing window had extensive wet rot and needed replacing. This will be completed by the end of March but will severely deplete our funds so we need to do some fund- raising and seek donations to replenish the bank balance.

The annual Harvest Lunch again filled the hall and another successful Christmas Bazaar was well attended. The hall has also been used for Parish Council and Parish Plan meetings, a bellringers’ social as well as private functions.

The first point to note is that very little of the glass is mediaeval in its origin.
