Auf dem Weg in die Zukunft nimmt mein Ich die Vergangenheit mit. Nur die Liebe und der Tod können das alles ändern.’“ Khalil Gibran Le sable et l’écume, 1926 Die erste Begegnung: Im Jahr 2002 bin ich zum Festival „Jenseits von Europa – Neue Filme aus Afrika“ nach Köln gekommen, um meinen ersten Kurzfilm UNE FEMME POUR SOULEYMANE zu präsentieren. Ich hatte den obigen Text dabei, der mich beim Schreiben der Filmgeschichte geleitet hatte. Es war meine erste Reise nach Deutschland. Wertvolle Erinnerungen. Welche Auszeichnung und welche Freude nach Köln zurückzukehren, zu denen, die meine Anfänge als Regisseurin miterlebt haben… Ich komme in diesem Jahr nicht nur als Schirmfrau der Diaspora-Reihe zurück, sondern auch um meinen ersten Lang- spielfilm DES ÉTOILES zu präsentieren. Der Text von Gibran begleitet mich noch immer und wird dies auch weiter- hin tun. Er enthält erneut die Essenz des Films DES ÉTOILES, der Beziehungen im Exil und in der ­senegalesischen Diaspora nachzeichnet. „Mein Haus“ das ist Paris. „Die Straße“ führt mich sehr häufig nach Dakar. Ich drehe keine Filme in meinem „Haus“. Mithilfe fiktiver Filmgeschichten versuche ich, den Teil meiner Identität zu erforschen, den ich am wenigsten kenne und der im Senegal liegt. Meine doppelte (dreifache) kulturelle Prägung beruht darauf, dass ich aus mehreren Ländern gleichzeitig stamme oder aus einem einzigen Land, das noch gar nicht existiert. Einem Fantasiereich zwischen zwei Ufern und zwei Kon- tinenten. Aus diesem Reichtum schöpfe ich, diesen versuche ich zu bewahren, indem ich „meine Vergangenheit stets mitnehme“ auf meinen „Wegen in die Zukunft“. Mein Dank geht an die OrganisatorInnen von FilmInitiativ Köln e. V. für Eure Unterstützung und Beständigkeit. Like almost all my films, Murder in Pacot came about as the result of an emotionally-charged, even traumatic, event. The 2010 earthquake in Haiti made me face a reality that I didn’t think was possible in my country. It laid bare both the loveliest and the ugliest facets of the human community. Following a brief moment of confusion, the categories of class, sex and racial origin inexorably came back with a vengeance. The end-of-the-world atmosphere needed something cathartic. I had to tackle it in two ways to rid myself of it, via two totally different works, based on diametrically opposed stories which, in reality, form part of a whole. In response to the implacability of Fatal Assistance (a 2013 documentary) in unmasking the folly of the humanitarian machine in action in Haiti, Murder in Pacot, following the same radical approach, reveals the distress and abandonment of human beings.

Built exclusively around Baldwin's words, Peck's I Am Not Your Negro delves into the complex legacy of three lives (and deaths) that permanently marked the American social and political landscape. Vor der Ruine einer Villa – einzig ein Anbau ist halbwegs verschont geblieben – bemühen sich ein Mann und eine Frau darum, ihr Leben behelfsmäßig im Freien zu organisieren. Mit Tüchern schützen sie ihr neues Schlafzimmer vor der Sonne. Davor einige Sessel und Stühle, sowie ein kleiner Grill. Die Villa ist von einem großen Grundstück mit schönen alten Bäumen umgeben. Das Ehepaar – sie bleiben ohne Namen – steht im Mittelpunkt der kammerspielartigen Inszenierung, die sich – mit Ausnahme einer kurzen, deshalb auch prägnanten Sequenz – ausschließlich auf diesem Villengelände abspielen wird. Die Radionachrichten berichten von der Rettung eines Mädchens, das drei Tage verschüttet war und gerettet werden konnte. Über die Gesamtzahl der Toten und Verletzten aber gebe es noch immer nur Schätzungen.
