HILL & HILL-MOBERLY COJ:fNECTIONS OF FAIRFIELD COUNTY, SOUTH CAROLINA Compiled by George A. Hill April, 1961 - Ponca City, Oklahoma Copyright, 1961 By George A. Hill i PREFACE I present herewith the Hill-Hosch-Mobley family records that have been collected after a period of work on this subject covering 18 years. Prior to this I listened to my father reminisce on the Hill-Hosch connections of South Carolina and Georgia. De Forest Hill was a fine conversationalist and spent many hours relating the various kinships, family traditions and legends. Many of these have proved to be true while others are yet to be confirmed. In making the investigations of these families, the search included the National Archives and Library of Congress, w~shing ton, D. C.; The Courthouse at v:Tinnsboro, South Carolina ( Fair~ field County); The Oklahoma Historical Society Library at Okla homa City and the Genealogical Section of the Tulsa Public Library at Tulsa, Okl~homa; and othe~ Courthouses and Libraries. I was courteously recieved at these various libraries and Court houses and wish to express my appreciation for the help given by them and the courtesy extended. The reader may find within these pages that many of the connections are left in doubt. This is true to a certain extent since the known records do not always provide the facts necessary to prove existing relationships. The compiler has attempted to present the family histories shown herein as the records potray them. We wish to a~knowledge the errors, mistakes, ommissions and deb2sement of the language that will be found in this work. In addition to the usual mistakes in copying and judgement, we have found that many of the families listed are not shown fully for the following reasons: Many testators whe"n drawing up their wills omitted one or more of the heirs by mistake. Then in the general settlement, the heir would step up and claim his share. We do not always have the General Statements and accompanying legal instruments of the families shown in this volume and this could be the case •.• Or the testator names his heirs and in the final settlement one or more heirs are missing. Then the assumption would seem to be that these children or leg·atees deceased after the \\.rill was drawn up. Some of the families shown are taken entirely from the records with other family records to supplement them. It is likely that in many instances there were other heirs who died before the wills or other legal records were drawn up. Many of the families are taken mostly from family records. It is expected that these are·incomplete ana some of the members of these families deceased when quite young and consequently not shown •. that legal records in the local courthouses would throw further light on these connections. ii PREFACE Many of the family records shown herein are first found in Virginia and South Carolina with some reference to their origin in Penn. and Maryland. But for the most of these families, much more work is required to complete their records. Naturally, much material is omitted from this publication not because of any intent to do so but because the records were not available or found, or that the replies have been so brief that the vital records amounted to nothing or there were no replies at all. We hope to continue research on the Hill-r,~obley Hosch and allied family lines 2nd look fon,v-:.2rd to a 2nd edition of this work. To those who have responded to request for data, I extend my sincerest thanks. I wish to acknowledge my indebtedness to those individuals who have greatly assisted in this work or helped in any manner. They are: Mrs. Etta Rosson, Shelton, South Carolina, Mr. Donald B.
