Experiences of Pet Loss in the South African Context A EXPERIENCES OF PET LOSS IN THE SOUTH AFRICAN CONTEXT A thesis submitted in fulfilment of the requirements for the completion of the degree MASTER OF ARTS IN PSYCHOLOGY RHODES UNIVERSITY Thesis submitted by KATHLEEN LOUISE LOWEN G1110415 Supervised by Ms. Henriette van Zyl May 2016 ABSTRACT: In this research the experience of pet loss in relation to the intensity of grief and the repression of that grief due to societal restrictions was studied in a South African sample of 12 pet owners who had experienced the loss of a pet within 24 months prior to the study. A pilot study was conducted in order to refine the semi-structured interview schedule. Participants were asked about their pets, their experience of pet loss in relation to their feelings before and after the loss and whether they felt they could openly grieve around friends and family. The findings indicated that the intensity of grief experienced by the participants was influenced both by the intensity of their Bond with the pet and the repression of their grief due to assumed social sanctions surrounding mourning the loss of a pet. The findings from the study clearly indicate the necessity for pet loss counselling, however it was clear that societal views surrounding pet loss are shifting, thus allowing pet owners to mourn their loss more openly with family and friends. This indicates a decrease in cases of disenfranchised and complicated grief. Furthermore the impact of pet loss necessitates the social legitimation and acknowledgment of the significance of pet loss in contemporary society as these relationships with pets are an increasingly prominent feature both within and as an alternative to familial systems. i ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS The completion of this project could not have been possible without the support and guidance from my supervisor, Henriette van Zyl, who encouraged me in times of doubt.     Grief And The Loss Of A Pet FIVE STAGES OF GRIEF Grieving is a complex process which includes many stages. These stages include: de- nial, bargaining, anger, sadness, and resolution. The stages may come in a recognized sequence or they may appear as a complex series of emotions and feelings. The length of each stage varies with each person, and often among cultures. Some people may return to a particular stage, such as anger, time and again. Others may reach resolution quite quickly. It does not mean they loved their pet any less, it is just their individual reaction to their loss. In most instances, the grieving process may continue for a few months to almost a year. Denial: When we hear bad news, we have a tendency to deny it. We think it really is not true, that we did not “hear it right,” or “it can’t be as bad as that.” This defensive mechanism is an attempt to insulate ourselves from the emotional trauma we are, or are going to, experience. Bargaining: When a human loved one is dying, we want to “bargain” with God. If you let my loved one live, then I will... Although this is not as common when a pet dies, many people still experience this stage of grief. Variables of interest were: relationship, species, time since death, type of death, attachment, social support, and demographic variables. Female and male participants over eighteen (n = 85) who had lost a companion animal within the last six months completed the survey. Individuals who classified their pets as good companions reported significantly less grief relative to those who considered their pets to be their children (p < 0.001) and best friends (p = 0.001). Those who labeled their animal as “my child” had significantly higher attachment scores when compared to those who labeled their pet as “a good companion” (p = 0.012). Older age was predictive of significantly lower grief, situational guilt, and loneliness.
