Photo by Tigers striving Belinda Pike for Swift success “The primary focus has been on my finance degree at UWA, which I completed last year. I am desperate to learn, so on top of university I have been seeking exposure to as many different things as possible! “I had a horrible run of injuries at the start of this year. I had work commitments over summer and as a result was unable to do any football specific training over from November through to January. “That really set me back because every time I thought I was ready to go, my body would break down. I managed a few half games of reserves sporadically over the course of the year before finally getting a string of games together at the end of the year and breaking back into the league side “I still get to go out every week (well for seven weeks so far this year) with a group of really good mates and have a lot of fun. “In the end you play for each other. You want to be able to look your mate in the eye at the end of the day and share that feeling of trust and respect. No better time to establish that than during finals.” The last time the Tigers and the Royals met was in Round 20 when it was the Royals who walked away with a 10-point victory. Swift said they had their chances that day. “We had our chances but in the end they were the better side on the day,” he said. “I don’t think we have to change a huge amount. “Finals footy is a completely different ball game and we feel we are a team that is primed to seize the opportunity we have. It won’t be easy, but that’s the way we like it.” TOM SWIFT’S FINALS APPEARANCES 2010 Second semi-final win over Swan Districts (50 points) Grand final loss to Swan Districts (one point) 2011 Second semi-final win over West Perth (85 points) Grand final win over Subiaco (56 points) 2012 Second semi-final win over Swan Districts (32 points) Grand final win over East Fremantle (26 points) WAFL finals format Elimination and qualifying finals – Sunday, September 6 Elimination final – East Perth (4th) v Claremont (5th) Qualifying final – West Perth (2nd) v Peel (3rd) 1st & 2nd semi-finals – Sunday, September 13 “We strongly believe we 1st semi-final - winner elimination final v loser qualifying final have the team and the 2nd semi-final – Subiaco (1st) v winner qualifying final Preliminary final – Sunday, September 20 systems to give the finals Winner 1st semi-final v loser second semi-final a real shake.” Tom Swift Grand final – Sunday, September 27 Winner 2nd semi-final v winner preliminary final 6 by Sean Cowan Collectables During 2015, the Football Budget will again feature a section on WAFL memorabilia and invites you to write or email if you want more information about the football collectables you have tucked away at home.
