1 A Message from the Artistic and Executive Directors

Welcome to YPT and our production of !

Whether this story is new to you… or whether this outing is a nostalgic trip down memory lane, we know you will enjoy yourselves immensely!

This season, YPT’s theme explores how young people take matters into their own hands to repair things and to create change in their lives. Here is a prime example: two children write their own advertisement for a . Because life in their home has become a little bit upside-down. Their inventive job-posting attracts the practically perfect – and just a bit tricky – Mary Poppins… who does more for them and their parents than they could ever have imagined. Thanks for joining us. We hope to see you throughout our season!

ALLEN MACINNIS NANCY J. WEBSTER Artistic Director Executive Director

Fax 212-397-4684. www.MTIShows.com The videotaping or other video or audio recording of this production is strictly prohibited.

The performance will run approximately 90 minutes with no intermission. 3 Director's Note

“Anything can happen if you let it.” Mary Poppins’ inspirational words to her young charges, Jane and Michael Banks, are at the heart of this timeless story. This simple statement gives us Mary’s motto in life - that the limits of our life experience are defined by what we believe is possible ...so why not believe there are no limitations?

The magical nanny with the parrot-handled umbrella continues to fascinate us and stir children’s imaginations. Why?

Mary is the loving “auntie” who won’t let our inner child get away with anything, but always makes sure we land on our feet. She has taught multiple generations to be respectful of possessions, to not judge a book by its cover, to clean up their own messes and most importantly, that a family can be changed for the better by even the youngest among them.

Can you think of anyone you’d rather spend the holiday season with than everybody’s favourite nanny?

Right then, off we go. Spit-spot.

Independently 13 DID YOU KNOW… In addition to the professional productions and the educational programs we offer, YPT also reaches into the community in many other ways.

Learning is at the centre of everything we do, and over the last year, YPT has:

• Provided engaging programs for New Canadians including work with grandparents and grandchildren at Early Learning Centres

• Worked with young people in care at SickKids Hospital

• Developed programs for women and children in shelters around the city

• Delivered 757 arts education workshops to over 9,000 young people in the community

• Provided teachers with professional development on using the arts effectively in the curriculum

Most importantly, last season YPT was able to offer almost 43,000 free or subsidized tickets to kids who don’t have the financial means to attend theatre.

We are very proud of our 52 years of history and we appreciate the many people who support this work. If you believe, like we do, that making theatre for young people and creating access to arts education really matters, please join us by making a donation today.

YOUNG PEOPLE’S THEATRE is the oldest professional theatre company in Toronto and is a national producer and presenter of theatre for young audiences – the first and largest of its kind in Canada. Over the past 52 years YPT has staged many of the most important plays that form the canon of work for youth in our country. The enriched learning experiences of YPT’s Education & Participation Department also provide young people with opportunities to develop their whole being. At Young People’s Theatre we strive for a positive and lasting impact on the emotional, social and intellectual development of young people – giving them the chance to grow into the unique and wonderful people they were born to be.

Young People’s Theatre is embarking upon Room for Imagination – a $42 million comprehensive campaign to build a new home. YPT has been operating for the last four decades in a re-purposed Heritage building owned by the City of Toronto. Today, the Company is bursting at the seams. It is time to create a child-friendly, state of the art facility to ensure long-term sustainability for an already financially- successful children’s charity. 17 JOIN THE TEAM! For Discussion After the Show

• What responsibility do members of a family have to one another?

• What do each of the characters learn about each other and themselves by the end of the play?

• What do Mr. and Mrs. Banks learn from Michael and Jane?

• Why does Jane say that she and Michael do not need Mary anymore?
