HADESTOWN More than a decade ago, folk singer/songwriter Anaïs Mitchell wrote the concept album Hadestown based on the Greek myth of Orpheus and Eurydice. After various reincarnations, Mitchell teamed up with Tony award- nominated director Rachel Chavkin to develop a Hadestown musical for the stage. After a very successful workshop production at New York Theatre Workshop in 2016, Mitchell, Chavkin, and a team of producers are bringing the musical to the Citadel Theatre to revamp it for a larger stage and a possible Broadway run. Chavkin, fresh off her Tony nomination for directing Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet of 1812 on Broadway, spoke to us from New York’s Imperial Theatre about her collaboration with Mitchell and what Citadel audiences can expect from the Canadian premiere of Hadestown. Rachel Chavkin, director of Hadestown. Photo by Chad Batka. Citadel Theatre: When Anaïs Mitchell approached you about developing Hadestown into a musical, what was your initial reaction? Rachel Chavkin: I fell madly in love with the album. Anaïs and I met after she saw my production of Great Comet at Ars Nova, and a mutual friend introduced us. We slowly started talking from there. It was a slow courtship, but by spring of 2013 we were diving into story structure, what narrative was already in place, where there were holes, etc. But yes – mostly my initial reaction was ‘this music is glorious.’ CT: What is your working relationship with Anaïs like? What’s your collaboration process been like so far? RC: Anaïs and I have a very close collaborative process. Because she doesn’t come from a theatre background, I’m able to bring a background in story structure, along with our dramaturg Ken Cerniglia. -

Nederlander or “Jimmy,” Chairman of The Nederlander Organization, was the visionary theatrical impresario who built one of the largest private live entertainment companies in the world known for producing and presenting world-class entertainment since 1912. Jimmy started working in the theatre at age 7 sweeping floors for his father, David Tobias (D.T.) Nederlander, in Detroit, Michigan. During a career that spanned over 70 years, Jimmy amassed a network of premier legitimate theatres including nine on Broadway: the Brooks Atkinson, Gershwin, Lunt-Fontanne, Marquis, Minskoff, Nederlander, Neil Simon, Richard Rodgers, and the world famous Palace; in Los Angeles: The Pantages; in London: the Adelphi, Aldwych, and Dominion; and in Chicago: the Auditorium, Broadway Playhouse, Cadillac Palace, and CIBC Theatres, and the Oriental Theatre which this year was renamed the James M. Arts & Humanities High Art, High Ideals: Rachel Chavkin Takes on Broadway The Tony Award-winning director of Hadestown may be theater’s most forward- thinking artist. By Stuart Miller '90JRN | Fall 2019 Zack DeZon / Getty Images Making her way to the stage of Radio City Music Hall to accept the 2019 Tony Award for best direction of a musical, Rachel Chavkin ’08SOA was thinking about time. She had all of ninety seconds to get to the microphone and deliver her speech, which was written on a much-creased piece of paper folded in her hands. Seven months pregnant, Chavkin, thirty-eight, was not about to sprint. As she told Columbia Magazine days later, “I warned my husband: if they call my name, I won’t have time to hug you!” Hadestown, an enthralling, profoundly moving retelling of the myth of Orpheus and Eurydice, would, by night’s end, capture eight awards, including best original score and best musical. The accolades were not only hard won — Chavkin, a leading light of experimental theater, and Anaïs Mitchell, a singer-songwriter from Vermont, shaped and refined Hadestown for seven years — but also, some might say, overdue. In seventy-three years of the Tony Awards (named after Antoinette Perry, an actress, director, and theater advocate), Chavkin became just the fourth woman to win for best direction of a musical, joining Julie Taymor (The Lion King), Susan Stroman (The Producers), and Diane Paulus ’97SOA (Pippin). And in 2019, out of twelve new musicals on Broadway, Hadestown was the only one directed by a woman. The show, playing at the Walter Kerr Theatre on West 48th Street, is set mostly in a New Orleans–style barrelhouse at a time of economic and environmental decay. -

AS YOU LIKE IT, the First Production of Our 50Th Anniversary Season, and the First Show in Our Shakespearean Act
Welcome It is my pleasure to welcome you to AS YOU LIKE IT, the first production of our 50th anniversary season, and the first show in our Shakespearean act. Shakespeare’s plays have been a cornerstone of our work at CSC, and his writing continues to reflect and refract our triumphs and trials as individuals and collectively as a society. We inevitability turn to Shakespeare to express our despair, bewilderment, and delight. So, what better place to start our anniversary year than with the contemplative search for self and belonging in As You Like It. At the heart of this beautiful play is a speech that so perfectly encapsulates our mortality. All the world’s a stage, and we go through so many changes as we make our exits and our entrances. You will have noticed many changes for CSC. We have a new look, new membership opportunities, and are programming in a new way with more productions and a season that splits into what we have called “acts.” Each act focuses either on a playwright or on an era of work. It seemed appropriate to inaugurate this with a mini-season of Shakespeare, which continues with Fiasco Theater's TWELFTH NIGHT. Then there is Act II: Americans dedicated to work by American playwrights Terrence McNally (FIRE AND AIR) and Tennessee Williams (SUMMER AND SMOKE); very little of our repertoire has focused on classics written by Americans. This act also premieres a new play by Terrence McNally, as I feel that the word classic can also encapsulate the “bigger idea” and need not always be the work of a writer from the past. -

Ted Sperling led the Philharmonic in a similar program, Broadway Night with the Philharmonic, during its July 2013 Bravo! Vail residency, with vocalists Betsey Wolfe and Andrew Samonsky. During the following summer’s residency, Mr. Sperling led the Philharmonic with Laura Osnes and Santino Fontana — who starred together on Broadway in Rodgers + Hammerstein’s Cinderella — as well as Christine Ebersole in Broadway Night with the Philharmonic: The Music of Frank Loesser. Ted Sperling most recently appeared with the Philharmonic conducting and directing its semi-staged production of Kern & Hammerstein’s Show Boat, in November 2014.
