  • 'Bite Me': Buffy and the Penetration of the Gendered Warrior-Hero
Continuum: Journal of Media & Cultural Studies, Vol. 16, No. 2, 2002 ‘Bite Me’: Buffy and the penetration of the gendered warrior-hero SARA BUTTSWORTH, University of Western Australia Introduction Can the ultimate girl be the ultimate warrior? If warrior identity is simultaneously a quintessentially masculine identi er, and one of the core expressions of ‘innate’ masculinity, then the biggest transgression of warrior iconography posed by Buffy the Vampire Slayer is Buffy’s gender. Buffy is both like and not like ‘other girls’. The social conventions of mainstream femininity, which have so often been used to argue that women cannot be warriors, are often precisely what make Buffy such an effective soldier in her speculative world. The blurred boundaries that are possible in speculative texts open up space necessary to examine the arguments and gendered ideologies which govern what is, and what is not, possible in the ‘real’ world. Such texts can often make explicit what is implied in more ‘realistic’ representations, and can either destabilize or reinforce gendered cultural conventions.1 Established as the ‘chosen one’ in the 1992 lm, and then in the television series which debuted mid-season in 1997, Buffy has slashed her way not only through the ctional constraints placed upon her predecessors in vampire carnage, but through the conventions governing gendered constructions of the warrior.2 Warrior tradition con- structs a coherent masculinity, including impenetrable male bodies, as the key to warrior identity, and renders ‘slay-gal’3 not only paradoxical but, arguably, impossible. It is this (im)possibility, and the ways in which Buffy the Vampire Slayer fractures and reinvents the gendered identity of the warrior-hero, which are explored in this article.

Short Story Contest October 2020 PROMPT: You’re sure that someone keeps tapping you on the shoulder. But when you turn around, there’s just empty space. Tahis by Nishith Chakraborty “So, are you saying I am going crazy?” I said to my best friend, Jen, in an annoyed voice. “You know I am not. I am just saying you have a creative mind, and you can’t deny the fact that you watch too many horror movies. Maybe it’s time to watch a little less of that, maybe just for the time being.” She said in a concerned voice. It all started when I moved to the city for my new job a few months ago. I got a great job, and my company arranged my accommodation in this fancy high-rise that I could never even dream to afford. I was so excited, so was Jen, as she had been nagging me to move to the city for a year now. When I moved in here, I couldn’t believe the views from my balcony, so breathtaking! However, on my first day while I was unpacking, I felt a tap on my shoulder. When I looked back, there was no one. I was a little spooked, as I was all alone in the apartment, Jen went out to grab some dinner for us. But I ignored it, maybe it was excitement, or maybe I was too stressed from moving. Almost 3 weeks passed by without another incident. So I kind of assumed that the tap incident was all in my head.

  • Tough Guise 2 – Abridged Clean Version
1 TOUGH GUISE 2 Violence, Manhood & American Culture [Abridged Clean Version Transcript] [VIDEO CLIPS – News Montage] Various news anchors: There has been a shooting… Once again, a mass shooting… 26 people, including twenty children, were killed… The deadliest mass shooting in American history… If you're just joining us, two young men apparently dressed in long black trench coats, opened fire at a high school just outside of Denver in Littleton, Colorado… Jackson Katz: When it comes to violence, it’s almost like there are two Americas. [VIDEO CLIP] Shooting survivor: It was horrific. I can't even put it into words. Jackson Katz: There’s the America that recoils in horror whenever a brutal mass shooting erupts onto our television screens, shocked by the level of destruction and suffering that just a few individuals are capable of visiting upon so many innocent people. [VIDEO CLIP] News anchor: Police say that the gunman opened fire in a theater during a showing of that latest Batman movie, "The Dark Knight Rises." Jackson Katz: And then there’s the America that can’t seem to get enough of violence as a form of entertainment and ritual, a seemingly endless appetite for ever-intensifying spectacles of all- out brutality and carnage. The question is what sort of relationship, if any, these two Americas have to one another. And if we’re serious about answering that question, we need to stop chasing symptoms and take a good look at a truth that’s been hiding in plain sight all along: that when we talk about violence in America, whether it’s real or imaginary, we’re almost always talking about violent masculinity.

What Kind of Law Making in a Global World? The Case of Africa Jacques Vanderlinden* I. INTRODUCTION When I was considering the main topic assigned by the organizers of the symposium, i.e., law making in a global world, a preliminary question jumped to mind: How relevant is the reference to a global world-is it just a gratuitous reference to an intellectual fashion of the day? Literally speaking the adjective "global" refers to something that "embraces the totality of a group of items."' But, on the one hand, since, in this instance, it qualifies the world (isn't global coming from globe and, accordingly, this juxtaposition tautological?), it may leave us a bit perplexed about the exact nature and extent of the items embraced. Are we really concerned about the law making of a global law applicable to the whole planet? On the other hand, when I look superficially at what appears to me and around me today when one refers to the global world, I tend, although for different reasons, to see myself as lonely as the savage in Aldous Huxley's Brave New World.
