Arts College for Women (A), Pudukkottai - 622001 MAHAMAHAM FESTIVAL AT KUMBAKONAM Introduction “Once In Twelve Years Mahamaham Once In Twelve Years Kurunji Flowers” According to Hindu mythology, on the orders of Lord Shiva there occurred floods in the Earth. The vessel containing nectar (amirtham). Rolled to South India through floods. Hit by Lord Shiva’s arrow, the vessel broke into several bits and scattered around places which became the holy places of Shiva’s worship. As the hose part of the vessel fell here at Kumbakonam, it was originally called THIRU KUDANTHAI. The overflowing nectar got collected here in the tank, which came to be called Mahamaham Tank commonly called Mamangakulam. In this tank the festival of having a holy dip in the holy springs, here celebrated as Mahamaham once in twelve years*. The Temple festivals important and famous rcration place in Kumbakonam. The festival is held in the Tamil month Masi. The Mhamaham tank occupies and area nine walls in the middle of the tank, which is the side of the meeting of the holy waters. Every month once in 27 days. Maham star will have its own Rasi Simha. The festival on Maham star in Masi is said to the Maha festival. This Maham day of Masi month, is called a day of MAMANGAM. This Mamangam has been in the course of tim has been named as Mahamagam festival. Nine Devathas Nine Devathas are none, but th following sacred rivers of Bharath, the rivers are Ganga, Yamuna, Narmatha, Saraswathi, Gothavari, Ponni, Sarayu and Kanyakumar. All thes nine mathas joined together went to see Lord Shiva in Himalayas. They have actually grievances to be rectified by Lord Shiva.The abode of Lord Shiva, prayet Lord Shiva to rctify. This grievance theyrequested because of this sacredness. The nine mathas immediately registered their inability in locating the place and situation of it and requsted that Lord to explain, the way to reach he tank for a holy dip. Lord Shiva pleased to accompany them to the tank and also directed them to take dip in the tank to come out of the sins accumulated because of the people took bathe in their sacred rivers. Mantapams All around the tank. There are beautiful steps and bund. The stps are all in Blacks stones. Water will b in the tank all around the year But when Mahamaham festival approaching fast, the water in the tank used to be cleaned and fresh water will b allowed to stay for about two to three feet, not to cause any difficulty to the devotes comes to dip in the tank. There are 16 Mandapams around the steps of the tank. Ineach and every mandapam there is a temple in a tiny structure every temple is with Shivalingam. Celebration Of Mahamaham Festival The festival of Thanjavur at Tamil Nadu. Kumbakonam is located 275 kilometers from Chennai. The city is also known as temple city as there are numerious temples at Kumbakonam. The city derivers its name from Kumbha, which means divine pot. The festival starts when the moon is in collocation with Maham, a constellation and this astronomical placement occurs only once in twelve years. During Mahamaham festival the tank will be emptied and only knee deep water will be kept for safety. The nine springs in the tank provide water to the tank. Masi Maham Masi Maham is a festival observed by the Hindu in the month of Maham, called also in Tamil Masi, corresponding to the English months February – March, on a day when the asterism Maham (leonis) holds sway. The day of observance of this festival will generally be the full Moon day of the month Maham referred to above. The deity presiding over the Maham asterism is said to be Brihaspathi (Jupiter) considered by the people to ne the preceptor of the Gods also. Hence offering worship to him on this festival occasion is believed to confer on people all the desired. The waters of all these holy rivers are said to be present in the Maham – Maham tank at Kumbakonam on this festival occasion and consequently people from cullparts of India flock thither to bathe in th sacrd tank and get purified of their sins. There is also a representation in sculture of this Tulabhara incident of the Tanjavur Nayak King on the bank of the Mham –Maham temple at Kumakonam*. Conclution The Kumbeshwarar temple in Kumbakonam is major important religion tourist spot in the city. Mahamaham is famous festival in Tamil Nadu. It is comes from twelve years once. The beauty of this temple is known its Gopuram, paintings and very impotent pool. These special features of this temple attracts the domestic as well as the foreign tourists. Facilities which are available for tourists are protected drinking water, wheel chairs for the physically challenged people and the information centers which are instituted by the temple management itself.
