DeGruccio _________________________________ Gail Bederman, Director Graduate Program in History Notre Dame, Indiana July 2007 UNMADE: AMERICAN MANHOOD IN THE CIVIL WAR ERA Abstract by Michael E. DeGruccio This dissertation is ultimately a story about men trying to tell stories about themselves. The central character driving the narrative is a relatively obscure officer, George W. Cole, who gained modest fame in central New York for leading a regiment of black soldiers under the controversial General Benjamin Butler, and, later, for killing his attorney after returning home from the war. By weaving Cole into overlapping micro-narratives about violence between white officers and black troops, hidden war injuries, the personal struggles of fellow officers, the unbounded ambition of his highest commander, Benjamin Butler, and the melancholy life of his wife Mary Barto Cole, this dissertation fleshes out the essence of the emergent myth of self-made manhood and its relationship to the war era. It also provides connective tissue between the top-down war histories of generals and epic battles and the many social histories about the “common soldier” that have been written consciously to push the historiography away from military brass and Lincoln’s administration. Throughout this dissertation, mediating figures like Cole and those who surrounded him—all of lesser ranks like major, colonel, sergeant, or captain—hem together what has previously seemed like the disconnected experiences of the Union military leaders, and lowly privates in the field, especially African American troops. -

In a region where social relations were largely defined by slavery and its aftermath, contests over education were tense, unpredictable, and frequently bloody. Literacy figured centrally in many of the region's major struggles: the relationship between slaveowners and slaves, the competing efforts to create and constrain black freedom following emancipation, and the disfranchisement of black voters at the turn of the century. Education signified piety and propriety, self-culture and self-control, all virtues carefully cultivated and highly prized in nineteenth-century America. Early advocates of public schooling argued that education and citizenship were indissociable, a sentiment that was refined and reshaped over the course of the nineteenth century. The effort to define this relationship, throughout the century a leitmotif of American public life, bubbled to the surface in the South at critical moments: during the early national period, as Americans sought to put the nation's founding principles into motion; during the 1830s, as insurrectionists and abolitionists sought to undermine slavery; during Reconstruction, with the institution of black male citizenship; and at last, during the disfranchisement movement of the 1890s and 1900s, with the imposition of literacy tests. -

American thought and culture between 1776 and 1820 has often been viewed through the lens of the Enlightenment, with its emphasis on rational inquiry, political liberation and social equality, but during the same decades there were also apparently contradictory themes and ideas at play which emphasized the irrational and the oppressive. These impulses found their most striking articulation in the ghostly figures, murderous villains and pervasive paranoia of the form we now call the Gothic. Through primary sources from a number of different disciplines we will explore the relationship between these two traditions, considering how the idealistic aims of the Enlightenment were formulated and expressed, the limitations and contradictions of these aims, and the ways in which America‟s continuing divisions of class, race and gender were dealt with through the lurid imagery of the Gothic. Francis Marion The oil on canvas painting, General Marion Inviting a British Officer to Share His Meal, by Eutaw Springs artist John Blake White (1781 - 1859), memorializes the “Swamp Fox” sharing his sweet potato dinner with a British officer reported by “Parson” Mason Locke Weems in his highly romanticized The Life of General Francis Marion: A Celebrated Partisan Officer, in the Revolutionary War, Against the British and Tories in South Carolina and Georgia. This painting was presented to the United States Senate in 1899. According to the artist’s son, Octavius A. White: “the figure of Marion is a portrait from memory, as my father, when a boy, knew him well. Marion’s farm adjoined the plantation of my grandfather.” If this is true, this is the closest any artistic representation of Marion is to the artist having painted a contemporaneous image of the partisan. Past, Profit, and Future in the United States John Grabowski
Journal of American Studies of Turkey 22 (2005) : 19-33 History and Enterprise: Past, Profit, and Future in the United States John Grabowski American presidential campaigns – although they are historical in themselves – habitually use, or should I say, misuse history. This can be somewhat unnerving to an historian. But major civic events such as these do provide some evidence about the manner in which Americans choose to see history and whether they value the past at all. Take the 1996 election when Bill Clinton defeated Bob Dole. That election was very much about looking either forward or backward. Dole, a wounded World War II veteran, built much of his campaign upon the virtues and values of the past that he had experienced and which he represented. Clinton talked about the future. Clinton won and Dole went on to a somewhat inexplicable post- elective career as a part-time poster boy for Viagra. In 2000 the historical fault lines were less clear. Neither candidate, George W. Bush nor Al Gore, focused distinctly on any specific past event. But both resorted to strategic uses of history to promote their candidacy. Bush linked compassionate conservatism to values he claimed were inherent in the American character. Gore looked to the values inherent in his party, though he played this card carefully, avoiding both the New Deal history of the party and his own affiliation, as vice president, with the Clinton administration. Selective memory is wonderful. The past seemed integral to the campaign of 2004, whether the topic was the Vietnam War service record of John Kerry or the memory of September 11. -
