This paper is the first to report observations on the leaf-indumentum of 33 species of the tribe with Scanning Electron Microscopy. Apart from simple hairs and papillae, three types of stellate trichomes were observed: fasciculate hairs, appressed stellate hairs and multiradiate hairs (sessile or stalked). The existence of stellate trichomes on the examined species of Pomaderreae was confirmed. Trichomes and indumenta are often variable within genera, as the type of indumentum may be more related to its function. Some groups of species in the genera Cryptandra Sm., Pomaderris Labill. and Stenanthemum Reissek have indumentum characters that seem to be more consistent and might be of value to elucidate relationships between taxa. Leaves 5-10mm long by 1-2mm wide, margins inrolled to almost cover the underside. Fruit dry, small. DISTRIBUTION Endemic. Three Kings, North and South Islands. In the South Island generally scarce reaching its southern limit at Eyrewell Forest, Canterbury; south of Auckland it is mainly east of main ranges in North Island. HABITAT Usually coastal and lowland open shrublands, gumland scrub and in sand country. Also in rocky headlands, gravel river terraces. Occasionally found well inland in montane situations. A species virtually confined to successional vegetation types FLOWER COLOURS White, Yellow PROPAGATION TECHNIQUE Difficult. Can be grown from semi-hardwood cuttings and seed but seed is hard to germinate. The best results seem to be from cuttings rooted in untreated sawdust. Once plants are established they grow very well and make an attractive flowering shrub for an open, sunny post. Abstract Patterns of flammability across the vascular plant phylogeny, with special emphasis on the genus Dracophyllum by Xinglei Cui Fire has been part of the environment for the entire history of terrestrial plants and is a common disturbance agent in many ecosystems across the world. Fire has a significant role in influencing the structure, pattern and function of many ecosystems. Plant flammability, which is the ability of a plant to burn and sustain a flame, is an important driver of fire in terrestrial ecosystems and thus has a fundamental role in ecosystem dynamics and species evolution. However, the factors that have influenced the evolution of flammability remain unclear. -

This addendum was created to incorporate newly listed species, genus name changes, subsumed species (i.e. incorporated into another genus), new subspecies and recommended deletions. It also provided the opportunity to correct mistakes identified in the original edition. The addendum also includes detailed profiles of ten of the newly identified species. Corrections to 2002 Edition Acacia Mucronata (variable sallow wattle p. 58) :Another common name for this species is Mountain Willow Gastrodia Species - There are very few collections of Gastrodia from King Island. -

Pimelea arenaria sensu stricto sand daphne Status Gradual Decline Description A low spreading, silky-haired shrub in the daphne family, that grows to 400 mm tall. Often, branches are buried in sand so one plant can form a mound and cover quite a large area. Branches are usually erect Recent record and up to 400 mm high. The branchlets and undersides of leaves are Historic record densely covered in hairs that lie flat, giving it a silvery appearance. Leaves are elliptic to oblong but sometimes rounded, 5–7 mm long by 3–5 mm wide. Similar species Pimelea prostrata is similar but the leaves are hairy on both sides and it has a sprawling habit. Pimelea tomentosa is also similar but has an upright habit, and leaves that are linear to lanceolate. Habitat Coastal sand dunes. Distribution This plant is endemic to the North Island and has two distinct forms, of which one is further restricted to Northland. Threats The major threats are habitat loss (through development for housing and plantings to stabilise moving sand) and vehicles on beaches disturbing sand dunes. Pimelea arenaria Comment Photo: C.C. Ogle. The tough, fibrous bark was formerly used by Maori as cord. 48 Pimelea tomentosa Status Serious Decline Description An erect, grey-green, leafy shrub ≤ 1 m. Branches are slender, and straight, with prominent leaf scars. Bark is orange-brown. Young branchlets have whitish hairs. The grey-green, soft lance-shaped leaves Recent record are up to 25 mm long, with pale silky hairs on their undersides. The Historic record blacky fleshy fruits are very conspicuous, terminating the branch ends wherever flowers have been present. -

Burns1 1School of Biological Sciences, The University of Auckland, Private Bag 92019, Auckland, New Zealand *Author for correspondence (Email: [email protected]) Published online: 13 January 2021 Abstract: Tree fern trunks provide establishment surfaces and habitat for a range of plant taxa including many understorey shrubs and canopy trees. The importance of these habitats for augmenting forest biodiversity and woody plant regeneration processes has been the subject of conjecture but has not been robustly assessed. We undertook a latitudinal study of the woody epiphytes and hemiepiphytes of two species of tree ferns (Cyathea smithii, Dicksonia squarrosa) at seven sites throughout New Zealand to determine (1) compositional variation with survey area, host identity, and tree fern size, and (2) the frequency of woody epiphyte and hemiepiphyte occurrence, in particular that of mature individuals. We recorded 3441 individuals of 61 species of woody epiphyte and hemiepiphyte on 700 tree ferns across the seven survey areas. All were facultative or accidental, with many species only ever recorded as seedlings. Epiphyte composition varied latitudinally in response to regional species pools; only two species occurred as woody epiphytes at every survey area: Coprosma grandifolia and Schefflera digitata. Five woody epiphyte species exhibited an apparent host preference to one of the two tree fern species surveyed, and trunk diameter and height were strong predictors of woody epiphyte and hemiepiphyte richness and diversity. -

AUSTRALIAN PLANT SOCIETY – NORTHERN GROUP NEWSLETTER - FEBRUARY 2008 Meetings are held on the third Tuesday of each month (except December and January) at Max Fry Hall, Gorge Road, Trevallyn at 7.30 pm when access to the Northern Group library is available. Plant Propagation Days are held on first Saturday of each month unless advised otherwise, from 10 – 12 at Verbeetens, 2 Killara Av. Lanena (1.5 km south of Exeter). Northern Group Plant Nursery is open most times, just ring Rosemary first on 6394 4600 to check that she will be home. Best time to ring is early in the morning or after 6 pm. Remember both seed and potting mixes are available to members for $4 a bag and slow release pellets for native plants for $3 a container. Welcome to new members - we look forward to seeing you at our meetings or activities. Activities since November 2007 newsletter: 20 November – Speaker was Matt Baker from Tasmanian Herbarium and his subject was “Weeds”. Matt is a weed taxonomist, an active member of the Tasmanian Weed Society and newsletter editor of their journal. He outlined the role of the Herbarium where information on individual plants, their associations, populations etc. is stored. It is just one of a chain of herbariums in Australia working towards better collections and documentation of weeds. A core role is the identification and naming of plants including weeds. Unfortunately available reference books like the Students Flora of Tasmania are becoming outdated as they were published over 40 years ago. A project is under way to completely revise them and should be available on the internet as they are finalised.
