Nancy Wasserman (1955- ) Color slides, 1978-1997 FB-110

Introduction

This collection contains color slides and a few black and white negatives created by free-lance photographer Nancy Wasserman of Norwich, Vermont, in the . They were given to the Vermont Historical Society by the photographer in 2012. They are stored in one archival box and consume 1 linear foot of shelf space.

Biographical Note

Nancy Wasserman was a photographer living in Norwich, Vermont, in the 1980s. A 1977 graduate of Dartmouth College, Wasserman also received a masters degree from Hampshire College. She moved to Vermont in 1979 and later moved from Norwich to Montpelier, Vermont, where she served as the deputy policy director of Vermont Energy Investment Corporation and was the founding executive director of the Vermont Community Loan Fund. She served on the Montpelier city council and operated Sleeping Lion Associates, Inc., in that city from 1999 until the end of 2011.

Scope and Content

This collection of color slides by Nancy Wasserman of Norwich, Vermont, documents some aspects of life in the Upper Valley of Vermont and New Hampshire in the 1980s. The collection documents several nuclear freeze, disarmament, and anti- nuclear power marches and protests. It also documents aspects of rural life such as cows and sheep, house raising, logging, firefighting, sledding, and farmers’ markets. The collection also includes color slides of community celebrations, diners, covered bridges, Morris dancing, handmade musical instruments, and stunning fall scenery. The bulk of the collection is from the 1980s but there are a few black & white negatives and contact sheets from 1978 and 1979 in New Hampshire and of the 1992 flood in Montpelier, as well as color slides of sheep in 1997. There are also a small number of color transparencies taken in 1981 and 1982, mainly of buildings and trains.

The collection includes color slides of Vermont governors Snelling and Kunin, U.S. Senators Patrick Leahy (Vermont) and Gary Hart (Colorado), politicians M. Jerome Diamond and Peter Welch, and Vermont state geologist, Charles Ratte. There are also a couple of photographs of poet and activist, Grace Paley (folder 24) at an anti-nuclear power protest. There are many unidentified individuals in the collection.
