  • China, Das Chinesische Meer Und Nordostasien China, the East Asian Seas, and Northeast Asia
China, das Chinesische Meer und Nordostasien China, the East Asian Seas, and Northeast Asia Horses of the Xianbei, 300–600 AD: A Brief Survey Shing MÜLLER1 iNTRODUCTION The Chinese cavalry, though gaining great weight in warfare since Qin and Han times, remained lightly armed until the fourth century. The deployment of heavy armours of iron or leather for mounted warriors, especially for horses, seems to have been an innovation of the steppe peoples on the northern Chinese border since the third century, as indicated in literary sources and by archaeological excavations. Cavalry had become a major striking force of the steppe nomads since the fall of the Han dynasty in 220 AD, thus leading to the warfare being speedy and fierce. Ever since then, horses occupied a crucial role in war and in peace for all steppe riders on the northern borders of China. The horses were selectively bred, well fed, and drilled for war; horses of good breed symbolized high social status and prestige of their owners. Besides, horses had already been the most desired commodities of the Chinese. With superior cavalries, the steppe people intruded into North China from 300 AD onwards,2 and built one after another ephemeral non-Chinese kingdoms in this vast territory. In this age of disunity, known pain- fully by the Chinese as the age of Sixteen States (316–349 AD) and the age of Southern and Northern Dynas- ties (349–581 AD), many Chinese abandoned their homelands in the CentraL Plain and took flight to south of the Huai River, barricaded behind numerous rivers, lakes and hilly landscapes unfavourable for cavalries, until the North and the South reunited under the flag of the Sui (581–618 AD).3 Although warfare on horseback was practised among all northern steppe tribes, the Xianbei or Särbi, who originated from the southeastern quarters of modern Inner Mongolia and Manchuria, emerged as the major power during this period.

  • Fine Chinese Art / 中國藝術集珍/ Buddhism & Hinduism
TWO-DAY AUCTION - Fine Chinese Art / 中 國藝術集珍 / Buddhism & Hinduism (CA0321) Sat, 6th Mar 2021 Lot 429 Starting price: €750 Estimate: €1500 A GILT BRONZE ‘LONGMA’ HILT, MING DYNASTY 明代銅 鎏金龍馬執柄 China, 1368-1644, Xuande period (1426-1435). Finely cast as a longma, a mythical creature with the head of a horse and body of a dragon, the wavy mane and scales finely chiseled and incised, with skillfully executed gilding to the copper alloy. Provenance: The collection of a French diplomat, acquired in China during the first half of the 20th century, thence by descent in the same family. Condition: Fine condition with extensive wear to bronze and gilt, some nicks here and there. The iron blade is certainly very old, but still an addition. The original blade was probably made of jade. Good natural patina overall. Weight: 62.9 g Dimensions: Length 10.6 cm The longma is an auspicious creature that, according to legend, is said to represent gratitude. During the Xuande reign it was introduced as a principal decoration and became a popular subject ever since. While depictions of longma on porcelain from this period are quite common, along with later examples in jades from the Qing dynasty, gilt bronze longma are extremely rare. The finely combed-effect of the whorls of the mane and the almost deliberate dramatic quality of the present piece are characteristic of early Ming sculpture, particularly during the Xuande period, and recall the stone sculpture lining the spirit road of the Ming Tombs near Beijing, such as a qilin, depicted in a similar pose on a ceremonial archway, in situ at the Valley of the Ming Tombs, Beijing, illustrated in Ann Paludan, The Chinese Spirit Road, New Haven, 1991, pl.

THE FAVORITE ANIMAL: THE HORSE AS MINGQI IN HAN TOMBS A Thesis Presented to the Faculty of the Graduate School of Cornell University in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Master of Arts by Yuan Fang May 2017 © 2017 Yuan Fang ABSTRACT This thesis seeks to understand the horse’s societal roles in Han Dynasty China, especially its prevalence as mingqi (mortuary objects) in Han tombs. The Han Dynasty (206 BCE – 220 CE) was the second imperial dynasty of China. Scientific and philosophical inventions, advances in material culture, and exchanges with surrounding regions witnessed considerable development during this period. The breeding of horses saw a surge during the Han Dynasty, and the Han Chinese expressed their fervor for horses in many aspects of their lives, including burying live horses and horse figures with the deceased in tombs. The thesis examines the Han dynasty and its social and ideological background. It also uses archaeological evidence and literature texts to study the social functions of the horse in Han China, and the Han Chinese perceptions of the tomb, the afterlife, and mingqi. An analysis of a horse mingqi figure at the Johnson Museum of Art is also included. The thesis shows that the significance of the horse as a funerary item is closely related to the widespread use of horses in the daily life of the Han dynasty Chinese, from the elites to commoners, specifically in terms of transportation, military defense, and entertainment. Horses also were given mythical and symbolic meanings associated with the concept of the afterlife. These factors made the horse a part of the Chinese mingqi tradition and an important element of Chinese art, which explains the prevalence of horse figures in Han tombs.

  • Epiphanies of Sovereignty and the Rite of Jade Disc Immersion in Weft Narratives
Early China (2014) vol 37 pp 393–443 doi:10.1017/eac.2013.2 First published online 3 July 2014 EPIPHANIES OF SOVEREIGNTY AND THE RITE OF JADE DISC IMMERSION IN WEFT NARRATIVES Grégoire Espesset* Abstract This article deals with facets of the political ideology of late pre-imper- ial and early imperial China as documented by remnants of a dozen texts belonging to an under-explored genre known in English as weft (wei 緯) writings or the “Confucian Apocrypha.” Its focus is on the transcendence of hierarchy and sovereignty, the transfer of dynas- tic legitimacy, and the pragmatic vehicle of “tangible” revelation. After a terminological introduction, the study turns to weft concepts of society and sovereignty as being consubstantial with the intrinsic hier- archical order of the universe, then moves on to explore how these con- cepts are dealt with in a cluster of weft narrative materials. Focused on a rite of jade disc immersion, the final section bridges the gap between the “mythical” sphere of weft narrative and conventional history, showing how some weft ideas actually determined political action. Weft theories contributed to the formation of the early imperial ideas of sovereignty and legitimacy and remained active throughout the early medieval era, having a lasting impact on the political sphere as well as liturgical practices intended to reenact the transcendent experi- ence of epiphany. This article is devoted to facets of the political ideology of late pre- imperial and early imperial China. It focuses on the transcendent origin and nature of hierarchy and sovereignty, the role of ritualized epiphany in the heavenly-controlled process of dynastic legitimacy transfer, and the pragmatic vehicle of “tangible” revelations—what Seidel called “imperial treasures.”1 The study shows how some of * Grégoire Espesset, 郭艾思, Centre de Recherche sur les Civilisations de l’Asie Orientale (CRCAO), Paris; email: [email protected].
