Lael Brainard took office as a member of the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System in June 2014. Before her appointment to the board, Brainard served as under secretary of the US Department of the Treasury from 2010 to 2013 and counselor to the secretary of the Treasury in 2009. During this time, she was the US representative to the G20 finance deputies and G7 deputies and was a member of the Financial Stability Board. She received the Alexander Hamilton Award for her service. From 2001 to 2008, Brainard was vice president and the founding director of the Global Economy and Development Program and held the Bernard L. Schwartz Chair at the , where she built a new research program to address global economic challenges. Brainard served as the deputy national economic adviser and deputy assistant to President Clinton. She also served as President Clinton's personal representative to the G7/G8. From 1990 to 1996, Brainard was assistant and associate professor of applied economics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology's Sloan School of Management. She has published numerous articles on various economic topics and is the editor or coeditor of several books. Previously, Brainard worked in management consulting at McKinsey & Company. In 1983, Brainard received a bachelor’s degree with university honors from . She also received master’s and doctoral degrees in economics in 1989 from , where she was awarded a National Science Foundation Fellowship. She is also the recipient of a White House Fellowship.

Sarah Rosen Wartell is the third president of the Urban Institute since it was founded in 1968. During her tenure, Urban has “elevated the debate” by bringing more of its insights from research to federal, state, and local government and practice; becoming a leader in research communications and data visualization; and undertaking an ambitious program of business systems and technology modernization. Previously, Wartell was deputy assistant to the president for economic policy and deputy director of the National Economic Council. At the US Department of Housing and Urban Development from 1993 to 1998, she advised the federal housing commissioner on housing finance, mortgage markets, and consumer protection. Later, she was a consultant to the bipartisan Millennial Housing Commission. After government service, Wartell was the founding chief operating officer and then executive vice president of the Center for American Progress. Before her tenure in government, she practiced law with the Washington, DC, firm Arnold & Porter. Wartell serves on the board of the Center for Law and Social Policy and on Bank of America’s National Community Advisory Council. She previously served on the boards of the Low Income Investment Fund, the Center for Urban Science and Progress at New York University, and the Corporation for Enterprise Development. Her areas of expertise include community development, consumer finance, asset building, and housing finance. Wartell has a bachelor’s degree with honors in urban affairs from Princeton University's Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs and a doctoral degree from Yale Law School.
