As Dr. B.R. Rajaram, Noted Photographer Venue : Khincha Auditorium, Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, Race Course Road, Bengaluru - 560 001 All are cordially Invited Girish Kasaravalli Girish Kasaravalli (December 3, 1950) is a ilm director of the Kannada cinema, and a pioneer of the parallel cinema movement. Known internationally, he has won the National Film Award for Best Feature Film four times - Ghatashraddha (1977), Tabarana Kathe (1986), Thaayi Saheba (1997) and Dweepa (2002). In 2011, he was awarded Padma Shri, the fourth highest civilian award by Government of India. A gold medalist from the Film and Television Institute of India, Pune, Kasaravalli started his career in ilms with Ghatashraddha (1977). Over the next 30 years he directed 11 ilms and a tele serial. The ilm he made to fulill his diploma, Avashesh, was awarded the Best Student Film and the National Film Award for Best Short Fiction Film for that year. He has received thirteen National Film Awards. The International Film Festival of Rotterdam held a retrospective of Girish Kasaravalli's ilms in 2003. Kasaravalli’s three women Reflecting women’s suffering, redefining cultural spaces He spins the yarn of kannada cinema with celebrative passion and single-minded dedication, salubrious novelty and lofty ideals. Time and again, he has hit the silver screen with surprising charm of his humane characters, the lives they bring on themselves and the lives that the external world imposes on them. His is a dynamic cinematic space which evolves in a vibrant dialogue or exchange with the literary, theatre, and essentially, social movements. And his works are deeply rooted in its cultural milieu and sensitive to its socio-political surroundings. Drawing inspiration from Italian neo-realism and the Navya literary movement, he, Girish Kasaravalli, has made remarkable contribution to the New Wave Cinema, both in thematic concerns and aesthetic sensibility. Alongside, Kasaravalli’s works bear ample testimony to his indomitable spirit of experimentation with the film form and content. Unfortunately, Kasaravalli is one of the most neglected great directors of our times. Though his film Ghatashraddha is the only Indian film to have featured in the Paris Cinematheque’s list of 100 best films of 100 years of world cinema and is ranked at 56, he has hardly received the due recognition in his own soil. Recently, his film Kanasembo Kudureyanneri has bagged NETPA Jury award as the best Asian film of 2010 at the Asiatica Film Mediale Film Festival of Rome. In 2009, he has been awarded South Asian Cinema Foundation's 'Excellence in Cinema' Crystal Globe Award 2009 at United Kingdom, the citation of which states that his films right from Ghatashraddha to Gulabi Talkies have mirrored the social conflicts in the six decades of Karnataka. -
Humayun's Tomb Garden Restoration
THE AGA KHAN T RUST FOR CULTURE Historic Cities Support Programme THE REVITALISATION OF THE GARDENS OF EMPEROR HUMAYUN’S T OMB, DELHI, INDIA PROGRAMME BRIEF April 2003 INTRODUCTION The first privately funded restoration of a World Heritage Site in India was completed in March 2003 through the joint efforts of the Aga Khan Trust for Culture (AKTC) and the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), under the aegis of the National Culture Fund. The objective of the project was to revitalise the gardens, pathways, fountains and water channels of the chahâr-bâgh, or four-part paradise garden surrounding Humayun’s Tomb in Delhi, according to the original plans of the builders. The preservation of historic gardens requires close attention to the living and renewable landscape elements. Currently a management plan is underway for the long-term sustainability of the enhanced site. HISTORY The tomb of the second Mughal Emperor Humayun, one of the 23 World Heritage Sites in India, was the first of the monumental mausoleums to be built in the country. The chahâr-bâgh, or four-part paradise garden, is the earliest existing example of the Mughal garden tomb. The tomb and gardens are considered one of the precursors of the Taj Mahal. Emperor Humayun was the son of Babur, the founder of the Mughal Empire. His tomb was built over nearly a decade beginning around 1565 (AH 973). The tomb contains over 100 Mughal graves. Influenced by Persian architecture, the tomb stands on a platform 120 metres square and reaches a height of 47 metres. Its construction was probably overseen by the Emperor’s grieving widow, Haji Begum, during the reign of Emperor Akbar, at an estimated cost of 15 lakhs (1.5 million rupees). -

Dileep Kumar Abstract Kannada film industry is indeed an extension of Kannada theatre. The early film personalities had been actively involved in Kannada theatre world. The Kannada film industry had to struggle during 1929 – 1934. Early Kannada films had to struggle against western culture. The film theatres were not equipped well to exhibit silent and talkie films to the audience. The Kannada film industry had recovered from certain setbacks after 1941. About 24 films were made in Kannada after independence. In1950s, Kannada film industry had not gained any identity from the point of view of production of commercial and art films. During 1971 – 1980 several art films and new wave films were made in Kannada. About 138 Kannada films were produced during the decade of 1970s. The decade of 1980s witnessed the production of a large number of commercial Kannada films. There were remarkable economic changes and modifications during 1991 – 2000 in the entire world. Most of the Kannada films were commercial films based on the technique of re-make. In the new millennium, Kannada film industry has grown remarkably. About 80 to 100 films were made every year in Kannada. In the meantime, the sad news of the decease of Professor Mohammad Shaheer, the distinguished Indian landscape architect afected the professionals of his feld profoundly. Professor Shaheer, who has written articles for Manzar journal on the restoration of historic gardens of India and Afghanistan, has had a signifcant role in updating and activating Persian garden in today’s life. His experiences in landscape architecture and restoration of Persian gardens are precious remnants for the youth. May God bless and rest his soul in peace… Working In Paradise with the Master, Mohammad Shaheer Ratish Nanda Abstract | Chief Executive Officer, Aga Khan Landscape Architect Mohammad Shaheer (1948-2015) was Trust for Culture, Delhi, India. the principal consultant in the restoration of several historic gardens in [email protected] India and Afghanistan. This article presents his particular approaches and methods in three landscape restoration projects: Humayun’s Tomb gardens and Sunder Nursery central axis in Delhi, and Babur garden in Kabul. Shaheer had a deep understanding of Persian Garden and was the Master, discerning the design intention of the Mughal builders. Restoring the authenticity of these historic gardens is the result of this understanding and also his special attention to details. Restoration of water flow and planting in these projects is carried out based on historic description also considering local tradition with the aim of bringing the garden back to the state of a flourishing orchard. Shaheer’s thorough understanding of local cultural context and his special style in design_ simple yet to great effect_ has ensured modern functions are incorporated in the historic gardens and turned them into major tourist attraction sites. -
