Join Classical 91.5’s Mona Seghatoleslami for the noontime concert series at Granite Park at the base of the Pont de Rennes Bridge, Thursdays through August. On the TV side, WXXI will be shooting 10 new episodes of Second Opinion. Our national health care series, now entering its 12th season, just received a Silver Communicator Award and a Bronze Telly Award (for excellence) for its “Teen Depression” episode in the Film/Video Health and Wellness category. Congratulations go out to Second Opinion’s production team. For information on any of the issues addressed on Second Opinion, visit secondopinion-tv.org. It’s a great resource, encompassing every episode of this award-winning series. Our news department continues to grow and have impact beyond the Greater Rochester area. We received two grants that will enhance our efforts. One is an upstate news hub project, funded in part by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB). It is intended to enhance the quality of news content and strengthen regional coverage on TV, radio and online. We are also embarking on an innovative citizen journalism project called “YelleR” with partners WDKX radio, Hacks/Hackers Rochester, RIT’s Journalism faculty, and the Department of Adolescence Education at Nazareth College. The YelleR project will allow the creation of a “Citizen Journalism” mobile app, as well as community outreach initiatives, to broaden news consumption and participation among traditionally underserved populations, such as minorities and citizens under 30. We’re proud to be the lead station in these initiatives! We could not respond to the needs and interests of our community without the generous support of our members. As June comes to a close and we prepare to end our fiscal year, I hope you’ll consider making a contribution by June 30. Norm Silverstein, WXXI President [email protected] Q&A WITH A WXXI UNDERWRITER In June 2012 a new restaurant and cocktail bar featuring French wine and country French cuisine opened at The Rochester Public Market. Cure Co-owner, Chuck Cerankosky, provides some insights about the Rochester restaurant scene. Q. Why do you feel Cure is a valuable asset to the Greater Rochester community? I feel that Cure joins an increasingly vibrant cloth of Rochester restaurants by offering a unique take on Gaelic comfort food. My partner, Dan Martello, and I feel like we identified a NTS void in Rochester›s restaurant scene, and filled it with an establishment that is on-par with analogous restaurants in New York and Chicago. Q. What is the most challenging aspect associated with owning/managing a restaurant? Finding the balance between expressing creative energies via cuisine, drink and atmosphere, and committing time to management and operational obligations is most challenging. A well-oiled restaurant requires an enormous amount of behind-the- scenes setup and maintenance, with the operator wearing a whole manner of hats, from electrician to accountant. The trick is to commit the proper energies to the tasks while EVE reserving enough for what is most important: making your guests happy! Q. What distinguishes Cure from other restaurants in the Greater Rochester area? A unique, French– and charcuterie-based menu, an all-French wine list, and an ambitious & cocktail menu featuring eclectic spirits and bespoke cocktails (like the recipe below)!     Biographical Notes World on Fire Peter Bowker Writer, World on Fire MASTERPIECE fans remember Peter Bowker’s impassioned adaptation of Wuthering Heights from 2009, which captured Emily Brontë’s masterpiece in all its complexity. With World on Fire he has created a plot with even more twists, turns, and memorable characters, centered on the chaotic events at the outset of World War II. Bowker has been an established screenwriter in the U.K since penning scripts for Casualty in the early 1990s. Since then, he has written for many long-running series such as Where the Heart Is and Clocking Off. His original work has included Undercover Heart; Flesh and Blood, for which he won Best Writer at the RTS Awards; Blackpool, which was awarded BANFF Film Festival Best Mini-Series and Global Television Grand Prize; and Occupation, which was awarded Best Drama Serial at the BAFTA Awards, in addition to Best Short-Form Drama at the WGGB Awards and another RTS Best Writer Award. He has since written Eric and Ernie and Marvellous. Both productions have won prestigious awards, including a Best Drama BAFTA for Marvellous, which became the most popular BBC2 single drama of the last 20 years. Most recently he has written an adaptation of John Lanchester’s novel Capital and two series of the acclaimed The A Word. Julia Brown Lois Bennett, World on Fire Driven to escape her cheating lover and dysfunctional family, Julia Brown’s character in World on Fire finds a wartime role that exploits her remarkable singing talent. In August 1967, in the wake of the extraordinary impact of Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band , The Beatles made a film. It was seen in the U.K. by a huge audience, at 8.35 p.m. on BBC One on Britain’s Boxing Day…and all hell broke loose. The story behind that film – Magical Mystery Tour – is revealed on Magical Mystery Tour Revisited on THIRTEEN’S Great Performances , Friday, December 14 at 9 p.m. on PBS. (Check local listings.) Magical Mystery Tour was chock-full of thinly veiled references to psychedelia, anarchy and fantasy, all in the setting of a traditional British sightseeing bus outing to the seaside. This was a far cry from the innocent loveable mop-top japery of Help! and A Hard Day’s Night . Middle Britain had tuned in but was a long way from turning on and dropping out – the nation was baffled and outraged by the film’s unexpected and uncompromising surreal, non- linear narrative. Paul McCartney appeared on The Frost Programme on rival ITV the day after transmission. He was called upon to account for himself and the rest of the group.
