(In New York, THIRTEEN will air the opera at 12:30 p.m.) The production, with a libretto by Amin Maalouf, had its Met premiere earlier this season in a production directed by Robert Lepage and conducted by Susanna Mälkki in her Met debut. Lepage’s staging, which uses thousands of LED lights to create the sea that separates the opera’s distant lovers, is a co-production with L’Opéra de Québec, where it premiered to accolades in the summer of 2015. Susanna Phillips stars as Clémence, the Countess of Tripoli, opposite Eric Owens as Jaufré Rudel, a troubadour on a quest to find his perfect love, and Tamara Mumford as the Pilgrim who carries messages back and forth between them.     Biographical Notes World on Fire Peter Bowker Writer, World on Fire MASTERPIECE fans remember Peter Bowker’s impassioned adaptation of Wuthering Heights from 2009, which captured Emily Brontë’s masterpiece in all its complexity. With World on Fire he has created a plot with even more twists, turns, and memorable characters, centered on the chaotic events at the outset of World War II. Bowker has been an established screenwriter in the U.K since penning scripts for Casualty in the early 1990s. Since then, he has written for many long-running series such as Where the Heart Is and Clocking Off. His original work has included Undercover Heart; Flesh and Blood, for which he won Best Writer at the RTS Awards; Blackpool, which was awarded BANFF Film Festival Best Mini-Series and Global Television Grand Prize; and Occupation, which was awarded Best Drama Serial at the BAFTA Awards, in addition to Best Short-Form Drama at the WGGB Awards and another RTS Best Writer Award. He has since written Eric and Ernie and Marvellous. Both productions have won prestigious awards, including a Best Drama BAFTA for Marvellous, which became the most popular BBC2 single drama of the last 20 years. Most recently he has written an adaptation of John Lanchester’s novel Capital and two series of the acclaimed The A Word. Julia Brown Lois Bennett, World on Fire Driven to escape her cheating lover and dysfunctional family, Julia Brown’s character in World on Fire finds a wartime role that exploits her remarkable singing talent. Luckily, Brown herself is a gifted vocalist and sang much of the soundtrack that accompanies the episodes.

In August 1967, in the wake of the extraordinary impact of Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band , The Beatles made a film. It was seen in the U.K. by a huge audience, at 8.35 p.m. on BBC One on Britain’s Boxing Day…and all hell broke loose. The story behind that film – Magical Mystery Tour – is revealed on Magical Mystery Tour Revisited on THIRTEEN’S Great Performances , Friday, December 14 at 9 p.m. on PBS. (Check local listings.) Magical Mystery Tour was chock-full of thinly veiled references to psychedelia, anarchy and fantasy, all in the setting of a traditional British sightseeing bus outing to the seaside. This was a far cry from the innocent loveable mop-top japery of Help! and A Hard Day’s Night . Middle Britain had tuned in but was a long way from turning on and dropping out – the nation was baffled and outraged by the film’s unexpected and uncompromising surreal, non- linear narrative. Paul McCartney appeared on The Frost Programme on rival ITV the day after transmission. He was called upon to account for himself and the rest of the group.

(In New York, THIRTEEN will air the opera at 12:30 p.m.) Piero Faggioni's production, which sets the action in Renaissance Italy, stars Dutch soprano Eva-Maria Westbroek and Italian tenor Marcello Giordani as Francesca and Paolo, the star-crossed lovers whose doomed romance was immortalized in an episode in Dante's Inferno . Marco Armiliato conducts a cast that also includes the American baritone Mark Delavan as Gianciotto, Francesca's brutal husband, and American tenor Robert Brubaker as the wicked Malatestino. Francesca da Rimini had its Met premiere in 1916 with Frances Alda in the title role, Giovanni Martinelli as Paolo, and Pasquale Amato as Gianciotto. The opera quickly gained a reputation among connoisseurs for its unusual blend of musical styles, joining the melodies of Italian verismo with the colorful harmonic influences of Debussy and the orchestral effects of Richard Strauss.
