This essay attempts to show that the twelve eclogues of Petrarch’s Bucolicum Car - men are ordered in a precise manner in terms of both chronology and content, and represent a kind of poetic autobiography of the first half of the author’s life. © PENSA MULTI MEDIA s.r.l. PER LEGGERE , XV , N. 29, AUTUNNO 2015 ISSN 1593-4861 ( PRINT ) - ISSN 2279-7513 ( ON LINE ) 8 ENRICO FENZI Sull’ordine di tempi e vicende nel Bucolicum carmen di Petrarca A Milano, nel 1358, Petrarca completò la trascrizione di suo pugno delle dodici egloghe che compongono il Bucolicum carmen , composte nel corso del triennio 1346-1349, in quello che oggi è il codice Vaticano lat. 3358 che al f. 49r, poco sotto l’ultimo verso dell’egloga 12, porta l’ explicit : «Bucolicum car - men meum explicit, quod ipse qui ante annos dictaveram scripsi manu propria apud Mediolanum anno huius etatis ultime 1357». Oltre a una serie di mino - ri correzioni rispetto alla versione originale gamma , testimoniata in particolare dai due manoscritti: Biblioteca Nazionale di Napoli VIII G 7, e Biblioteca Me - dicea Laurenziana di Firenze, Acquisti e Doni 280, l’autografo vaticano inglo - ba un aggiornamento assai recente, dal momento che i versi finali dell’egloga 12, Conflictatio , dedicata all’inizio della guerra dei Cento anni e alla sconfitta francese a Crécy nell’agosto del 1346, alludono chiaramente all’altra sconfitta francese, quella di Poitiers del settembre 1356, quando il re francese Giovanni il Buono fu catturato dagli Inglesi e portato prigioniero a Londra. Successiva - mente Petrarca tornò ancora sul suo testo, nel 1359, nel 1361 e nel 1366, in genere per operarvi piccoli interventi, salvo il caso rilevante dell’egloga 10, Laurea occidens , arricchita di circa ottanta versi 1. Ma nell’ottobre del ’66, scri - vendo al Boccaccio, egli mostra di aver definitivamente licenziato l’opera e di non volervi più tornare ( Fam . XXXIII, 19, 16). 1. Una volta fissati questi pochi dati essenziali, debbo dire che in questo mio intervento non mi fermerò né sui problemi del testo nei passaggi che van - no dal testo gamma a quello definitivo, né sulla composizione delle singole egloghe, ma mi fermerò su una questione più generale. Il ‘libro’ intitolato Bu - colicum carmen ha un ordine interno, una struttura unitaria alla quale la succes - sione delle dodici egloghe è sottoposta, come il titolo medesimo farebbe pen - sare? e tale struttura, ammesso che esista, è una struttura leggera affidata a sem - plici elementi di raccordo tra testo e testo, oppure arriva a definire una unità superiore che sovradetermina il senso e la direzione dei suoi singoli segmenti? Una via di questo genere è stata percorsa da Jean-Louis Charlet nel 2004, nel saggio L’architecture du Bucolicum carmen de Pétrarque , e sulla sua proposta è necessario soffermarsi 2. Dopo aver riassunto il contenuto di ogni egloga, os - servando che «le titre au singulier Bucolicum carmen incite à chercher pour ces douze poèmes une organisation d’ensemble» (p. 37), Charlet osserva che lo sdoppiamento di un’unica egloga originaria nelle due 6 e 7, Pastorium pathos e Grex infectus et suffectus , «semble une indication pour chercher une composition concentrique ou ‘en amande’, comme dans la littérature alexandrine». Ed è ap - punto una organizzazione concentrica che egli cerca di mettere in evidenza, cominciando con l’aggregare l’egloga 5, Pietas pastoralis , dedicata all’impresa di SULL ’ORDINE NEL BUCOLICUM CARMEN 9 Cola, alle due 6 e 7, perché tutte insieme queste tre rappresentano «le rêve po - litique d’une Rome libre et restaurée selon les intentions de Cola di Rienzo, avec au centre, en repoussoir, l’indigne papauté d’Avignon» (p. 38). In breve: la prima egloga, Parthenias , corrisponderebbe all’ultima, Conflictatio (dedicata, co - me s’è detto, alla guerra dei Cento anni): «La conclusion de cette dernière églogue montre qu’en réalité rien n’est assuré dans les choses humaines et donc qu’il n’est point d’espérance en dehors de Dieu. La dernière églogue constitue la réponse humaine au choix humain de la première et montre que la vraie solution des conflits intérieurs (1) ou militaires (12), est en Dieu» (p.

The production and reception of Ovidinia flourished, and Ovid’s poems in- creasingly became read as coherent compositions rather than dissected for bits of moral exempla. In particular, the Metamorphoses profoundly affects the literary landscape of late medieval France and England. Allusions to Ovid’s poem reemerge throughout the late Middle Ages at defining moments of poetic self-consciousness, most often through figures of ekphrasis, the use of poetry in order to portray other media of art. We do not have Francesco’s letter, which presumably touched also upon a tidy bequest of florins to purchase for his old friend a warm garment for nocturnal study and research: in- somnia was a shared affliction.1 Boccaccio’s delayed reply of 3 November, offering his condolences to Francescuolo, far from being a spontaneous outpouring of grief, is a carefully composed piece of consolatory rhetoric, a genre famously essayed in a long letter of 1361 to the exiled Pino de’ Rossi.2 First Boccaccio treats Petrarch’s elevation to a better life, rhetorically balancing the deceased’s tranquil joy in heaven with the letter-writer’s own continued travails in this earthly life, beset as he is by (graphically de- scribed) illness.

    ERTL PÉTER Klasszikus, bibliai és középkori reminiszcenciák Petrarca Sine nomine-leveleiben The aim of this study is to identify and analyze some classical, biblical and medieval literary reminiscences in Petrarch’s collection of satirical letters against the Papal court of Avignon, called Liber sine nomine. The examples examined illustrate how the poet combined the classical tradition with the Christian one and, thanks to the passages evoked, provided his own text with a further, political-polemical meaning. Moreover, the identification of an allusion to Virgil’s Aeneid allows a slight correction to be made to the critical text of the ninth epistle.1 „[…] amikor figyelmes olvasás közben hasznos mondásokra találsz […], tégy oda jelzést. NOTAS SOBRE A PRESENÇA DEDE AGOSTINHOAGOSTINHO NONO DE SECRETO CONFLICTU CURARUM MEARUM* Abstract Th is paper analyzes Petrarch’s De secreto confl ictu curarum mearum from the viewpoint of the infl uence of Augustine of Hippo. It points out the doctrinal closeness between Petrarch and Augustine and emphasizes the acquaintance Petrarch had with Augustine’s works and doctrines. It also shows some topics present in the Secretum which reveal discordant positions between both, particularly on the nature of the human will, its autonomy regarding to emotions and their role on the human conversion toward good. Finally, it refers to the importance that Petrarch’s Secretum had on the new way of considering human nature which characterized Renaissance humanism. Keywords: Petrarch, Secretum, Augustine, will, emotions. Resumo O artigo analisa a obra de Petrarca De secreto confl ictu curarum mearum desde o ponto de vista da infl uência do pensamento de Agostinho de Hipona que a obra manifesta. Refere os dados historiográfi cos disponíveisveis sobresobre o Secretum e analisa a proximidade doutrinal entre Petrarca e Agostinho, evidenciando a familiaridade que o poeta tinha com a obra do hiponense. Por fi m, mostra alguns pontos de discórdia doutrinal entre ambos presentes no Secretum, nomeadamente sobre a concepção de vontade e sobre o papel desempenhado por ela e pelas paixões da alma no processo de conversão. Conclui mostrando que este texto de Petrarca revela um passo importante na constituição na doutrina do sujeito que caracteriza o humanismo renascentista.     http://petrarch.petersadlon.com/ Petrarch Biographical Information Born in exile in the town of Arezzo on July 20th, 1304 Shortly after in 1319 his mother died of unknown causes. In 1326 his father dies On April 6th, 1327, Good Friday Petrarch sees Laura for the first time. Laura de Noves, born in 1310 and married to Hugues II de Sade in 1325. By 1336 Petrarch begins to compile Rerum vulgarium fragmenta also called Il Canzoniere, or in English, The Song Book. By 1374 when Petrarch dies it contains 366 poems, mostly sonnets to and about the love of his life which he could never have, Laura. Of the 366 poems 263 would be written while she was alive and 103 after her death. Laura would die while Petrarch was traveling later in 1348, on Good Friday. As Petrarch writes: on the same hour of the same day but 21 years after he first saw her. She would leave behind 11 children and a husband who would remarry within a year. A year later in 1337, and on the road again he travels to Flanders and the Brabant and then to Rome for the first time in his life. Later that year, his first child, Giovanni is born out of wedlock. Who the mother was is unknown, but by Petrarch's own account he did not treat her as well as he should have. The relationship between Petrarch and his son was a disappointment to Francesco. He describes Giovanni as "Intelligent, perhaps even exceptionally intelligent, but he hates books". Giovanni stayed with Petrarch until he was 20 years old (1357), at which time living in Italy, Petrarch will send his son to Avignon and in 1361 Giovanni would die from the plague.

Few things serve the person who made them and most often the greater the labour, the less the reward. A short marble slab covers the founders of great cities, which are enslaved by foreigners; one man builds a house, another lives in it and its architect lies under the open sky; this man sows, that one gathers and the man who sowed dies of hunger; one sails, another becomes wealthy with the merchandise brought across the sea and the sailor is miserably poor; lastly, one weaves, another wears the cloth and the weaver is left naked; one fights, another receives the reward of victory and the true victor is left without honours, one digs up gold, another spends it and the miner is poor; another collects jewels that yet another bears upon his finger and the jeweller starves; a woman gives birth to a child amidst suffering, another happily marries him and makes him her own, to the loss of his mother. There is not enough time to list all the examples that spring to mind and what else does that well known verse of Virgil’s mean: Not for yourselves do you make nests, oh birds? Thou knowest the rest…. Thus, in 1359, Francesco exhorts his friend Socrates to bear with composure, that others profit from his labours.

    Jerome Veith HONR 123: History 05/21/02 Petrarch’s Secret Inner Struggle The Secret Inner Struggle, comprising Book II of Francesco Petrarch’s Secretum, presents a dialogue between Petrarch as a young man and St. Augustine, a representation of his later, more experienced self. The conversation focuses on Petrarch’s attachment to worldly pleasures and pride, as St. Augustine urges Francesco to act more humbly and to dedicate himself to higher ideals. As much as the dialogue may simply be a harsh self- criticism, it reads like a treatise on St. Augustine’s Confessions, with constant references to Roman and Greek thinkers, and attempts to reconcile these with Christianity. The character of Francesco, despite being the antagonist to St. Augustine in the dialogue, is going through many of the same crises that the north-African bishop dealt with in the fourth century. Attached to knowledge and reading, proud of eloquence and beauty, Francesco –like Augustine in the Confessions- is tormented by the thought of a spiritual downfall at the price of mundane wisdom. Yet despite this awareness, his pride keeps him from committing himself to a life of humility and dedication to God. The figure of St. Augustine is as much a revival of the fourth-century bishop as it is the voice of Francesco Petrarch the writer, an older and wiser thinker than his namesake in the dialogue. Augustine constantly prods the younger Francesco throughout the dialogue, criticizing his choices and driving him towards an understanding of the right path. His first step is to instill deep fear in Francesco, thus assuring that he will listen to what Augustine has to say.

Bibliography 43 Francesco Petrarca as a Moral Philosopher Carroll 3 Abstract This essay examines specific Latin works by Francesco Petrarca; The Mont Ventoux Letter, On Religious Leisure, Secretum, Letter III, 12 “To Marco Genovese,” and The Triumph of Eternity. By reading these works, this paper aims to reconstruct Petrarca’s position on salvation and the role that literature and poetry have in the pursuit of it. This essay also questions the traditional interpretation of the poet as torn between his responsibilities as good Christian and his love of poetry. Sein Vater Pietro (genannt: Petracco) di Parenzo, ein Notar, stammt aus Florenz, lebt aber nach Streitigkeiten dortiger Bürgerfraktionen seit 1302 als Verbannter in Arezzo. Die Kindheit verbringt Francesco mit seinem Bruder Gherardo (* 1307) bei seiner Mutter Eletta Canigiani in Incisa in der Toscana. 1311 Die Familie zieht nach Avignon, dem damaligen Sitz des Papstes und der Kurie. Notare wie Pietro di Parenzo sind dort gefragt. Der Vater fördert die Ausbildung seiner Söhne und führt sie an die lateinische Literatur heran. 1316-1326 Petrarca studiert kirchliches und weltliches Recht in Montpellier und Bologna. Nach dem Tod des Vaters (1326) kehrt er nach Avignon zurück. 1327 Am 6. April um 8 Uhr früh während der Karfreitagsmesse in der Kirche Sainte-Claire in Avignon begegnet Petrarca nach eigenen Aussagen zum ersten Mal Laura. Auf sie wird er von nun an einen Grossteil seiner italienischen Gedichte schreiben, durch die er berühmt wird.

Long taken to be a closed circuit within, or a derivative offshoot of, the genre’s history, the eclogues of Dante, Petrarch and Boccaccio at once accentuated the metageneric elements of classical pastoral and influenced the future of pastoral representations through their consistent exploration of pastoral’s boundary- crossing double move—an expansionary movement outward into the representational terrain of other genres and a recuperative (and incorporative) return to the fold.
