Open University Library [email protected] ABSTRACT , on This essay discusses the political thought of Rowan 19 Jan 2020 at 08:22:36 Williams in the context of his leading influences and wider theology. It shows the continuity in his political writing from his early days as a radical to his frequent political speeches and lectures as Archbishop of Canterbury. The over-riding theme is that of ‘interactive pluralism’, which seeks to establish a form of politics with a very weak , subject to the Cambridge Core terms of use, available at system of sovereignty. This influenced his 2008 lecture on ‘Civil and Religious Law in England: a Religious Perspec- tive’, which suggested a limited role for parallel religious law codes alongside those of the state. Although this lecture was subject to much criticism, particularly in the popular press, it nevertheless displays a consistency with his strongly disestablishmentarian inclinations, which give a large amount of space to ‘first-level’ institutions in both decision-making and community formation. A healthy society is established through dispute and dialogue between such groups rather than strong centralized power. KEYWORDS: Archbishop of Canterbury, Islam, J.N. Figgis, pluralism, political theory, tolerance https://www.cambridge.org/core/terms The Background to Williams’s Political Thought In 1984, Rowan Williams wrote an essay on ‘Liberation Theology and the Anglican Tradition’ where he discussed the impact of what was then a relatively new theological movement and how it might affect the Church of England.

From Butler to Thornton: A Typology of Conflicting Readings of the Two Books of Scripture and Nature in the Church of England from the Eighteenth to the Twentieth Century By Jeffrey Boldt A Thesis submitted to the Faculty of Wycliffe College and the Graduate Centre for Theological Studies of the Toronto School of Theology. In partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Theology awarded by Wycliffe College and the University of Toronto. © Copyright by Jeffrey Boldt 2018 From Butler to Thornton: A Typology of Conflicting Readings of the Two Books of Scripture and Nature in the Church of England from the Eighteenth to the Twentieth Century Jeffrey Boldt Doctor of Theology Wycliffe College and the University of Toronto 2018 ABSTRACT This dissertation studies the persistence within modern Anglicanism of (a) a classical "high view" of Scripture as the exemplar of creation, (b) the apologetic and phenomenological advantages of this view in the wake of Joseph Butler (1692-1752) due to (c) the kind of theodicy the Bible displays in contrast to more rationalistic proposals from deism to panentheism. (d) Finally, the view of theodicy and Scripture one takes influences whether or not one reads the two books of Scripture and nature figurally. The "high view" was undercut by nineteenth-century sectarian polemics between Protestants and Tractarians. Yet a minority kept this tradition alive. Lionel Thornton (1884-1960) is important to this project because he escaped from Tractarian and Protestant dead ends. The dissertation lays out this broader Anglican story and then focuses on Thornton, for whose work I provide historical context and a detailed examination.

  • The Pluralist Theory of the State
THE PLURALIST THEORY OF THE STATE English political pluralism is a challenging school of political thought, neglected in recent years but now enjoying a revival of interest. It is particularly relevant today because it offers a critique of centralized sovereign state power. The leading theorists of the pluralist state were G.D.H.Cole, J.N.Figgis and H.J.Laski, and this volume brings together their most important ideas, making accessible a crucial body of work on radical political theory. It includes their major writings, mostly out of print and difficult to obtain, and here gathered together in an anthology for the first time. Current in the first two decades of this century, English political pluralism offered a convincing critique of state sovereignty and proposed a decentralized and federated form of authority— pluralism—in which the affairs of society would be conducted by self-governing and independent associations. Paul Hirst’s comprehensive introduction situates English political pluralism historically and gives a critical account of its main theoretical themes and the debate surrounding them. The book will be of great interest to those who see radical reform as vital for the future health of democracy, to students of political theory and the history of political thought, and also to students of jurisprudence and legal theory interested in the pluralist debate as it affects the concept of legal sovereignty. THE PLURALIST THEORY OF THE STATE Selected Writings of G.D.H.Cole, J.N.Figgis, and H.J.Laski. EDITED BY PAUL Q.HIRST London and New York First published in hardback 1989 Paperback edition first published 1993 by Routledge 11 New Fetter Lane, London EC4P 4EE This edition published in the Taylor & Francis e-Library, 2005.

Figgis CR was one of the great minds of the early twentieth century. He was also a lovable if slightly eccentric priest whose own scepticism helped him to understand the problems that other people had with belief, but whose sense of the absolute priority of God and the love of God lent rare power to his writing and preaching. Although Figgis died before the worst manifestations of twentieth-century totalitarianism, he was implacably opposed to all forms of absolutism. He favoured a broadly distributist and bottom-up view of authority that respects the integrity of individuals and of the communities and institutions that make up civil society, including the Church. Figgis is a prophet of subsidiarity, pluralism and of dispersed, not centralised, authority. Figgis was crossing the Atlantic in 1918 when his ship was torpedoed. Although he survived, the only manuscript of his magnum opus sank to sea-bed. The whole experience wrecked his already fragile health and he died in April 1919, aged only 53. The conference will combine a critical retrieval of Figgis’ thought with constructive reflection on the mission of the Church in our pluralistic world.

1 R.H. Tawney and Christian Social Teaching: Religion and the Rise of Capitalism Reconsidered* By any measure, R.H. Tawney’s Religion and the Rise of Capitalism (1926) is an extraordinary book.1 Its chief subject was the secularisation of economic thought and policy which Tawney believed had taken place in England during the seventeenth century. As such, it was an inquiry into what he saw as the defining fact of modern capitalism – its lack of an ethical or religious justification; and it was a call to the Christian Church to lead the way to a moral economic order by repudiating this godless economic condition.2 Clearly, this was not merely a work of history, but a contribution to religious and social thought. Nor did it fall upon deaf ears. Its popularity was such that in 1938 it became one of the first Pelican Books, Penguin’s series of cheap non-fiction works for the mass market.3 From 1943 to 1968 it sold 445,000 copies in this series, making it the eleventh best-selling Pelican,4 to say nothing of its popularity in the United States, the * I would like to thank Peter Ghosh, Emily Jones, the anonymous referees and the editor of this journal for their comments upon this article in draft. My thanks also to Simon Skinner and Stuart Jones for encouraging me to develop my thoughts on Tawney into publishable form. All errors are my own. 1 R.H. • The Church of England and Islam: Contemporary Anglican Christian- Muslim Relations and the Politico- Theological Question, 1988-2012
View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE provided by Heythrop College Publications The Church of England and Islam: contemporary Anglican Christian- Muslim relations and the politico- theological question, 1988-2012 Richard J. Sudworth Heythrop College, University of London PhD May 2013 1 Abstract The thesis proposes that an ecclesial turn has taken place in the contemporary Church of England’s reflections on Islam that seeks to root relations with Islam in the prior identity of the church as a participatory community within the life of the trinity. This ecclesial turn in Christian-Muslim relations resonates with a broader reorientation in political theology that seeks to address the question of how public space is shared with Muslims by beginning with a traditioned account of God and the Church. A summary of historical Christian theologies of Islam in the wider Christian tradition culminating in the seminal documents of Vatican II demonstrates the persistent attention to questions of the trinity and the need to hold together both theologies of dialogue and evangelism in the Christian-Muslim encounter. The historical context for Anglican Christian-Muslim relations is then outlined, highlighting recurring themes of loyalty and nationhood that underscore the significance of the politico- theological question. Analysing specifically the documents on other faiths produced by the Lambeth Conferences of 1988, 1998, and 2008, a move to inter-religious relations is revealed that eschews earlier attempts at novel theologies of religions. The work of Kenneth Cragg and Rowan Williams will be seen to be vital influences on this move as part of a school of scholarship that draws together an evangelical, missionary stream with a catholic sensibility of presence, both dependent upon a sacramental vision of the world.

THE JOURNAL of the UNITED REFORMED CHURCH HISTORY SOCIETY (incorporating the Congregational Historical Society, founded in 1899, and the Presbyterian Historical Society of England, founded in 1913). EDITOR: PROFESSOR CLYDE BINFIELD, M.A., F.S.A. Volume 7 No 1 October 2002 CONTENTS Editorial Cornwall's Congregational Association - Outreach, Support, or Control? by John Lander . 2 John Neville Figgis and Christian Socialism by Alan Wilkinson . 19 Patrick Hugh Figgis and Christian Socialism by Bridget Harrison. 28 Sydney Cave (1883-1953)- Missionary, Principal, Theologian by Ronald Rocking. 36 Reviews by Clyde Binfield, J. Gwynfor Jones, Stephen Orchard, Edward Royle, and David Thompson EDITORIAL There are three United Reformed congregations in Cornwall and another three congregations include a statedly United Reformed membership: the county has clearly not been a focus of either Congregational or Presbyterian numerical strength. Nonetheless 2002 sees the bicentenary of its County Congregational Association, and Dr Lander's account of its first hundred years is as timely as it is welcome. The Figgis family is notable for its ramifications. T. Phillips Figgis was a respectable Arts and Crafts architect, much used by the Presbyterian Church of England (he was, for example, the architect of St. Columba's Oxford). R.F. Horton of Lyndhurst Road, Hampstead, married at one remove into the Figgis family. John Neville Figgis, theologian and Anglo Catholic, is seldom associated with Protestant Nonconformity but he too belonged to the family and a cousin in the next generation, Patrick Figgis, was a distinctive Congregational and (briefly) Presbyterian and United Reformed Minister. Neville Figgis is a towering figure in the Christian Socialist tradition.
