Sudworth Heythrop College, University of London PhD May 2013 1 Abstract The thesis proposes that an ecclesial turn has taken place in the contemporary Church of England’s reflections on Islam that seeks to root relations with Islam in the prior identity of the church as a participatory community within the life of the trinity. This ecclesial turn in Christian-Muslim relations resonates with a broader reorientation in political theology that seeks to address the question of how public space is shared with Muslims by beginning with a traditioned account of God and the Church. A summary of historical Christian theologies of Islam in the wider Christian tradition culminating in the seminal documents of Vatican II demonstrates the persistent attention to questions of the trinity and the need to hold together both theologies of dialogue and evangelism in the Christian-Muslim encounter. The historical context for Anglican Christian-Muslim relations is then outlined, highlighting recurring themes of loyalty and nationhood that underscore the significance of the politico- theological question. Analysing specifically the documents on other faiths produced by the Lambeth Conferences of 1988, 1998, and 2008, a move to inter-religious relations is revealed that eschews earlier attempts at novel theologies of religions. The work of Kenneth Cragg and Rowan Williams will be seen to be vital influences on this move as part of a school of scholarship that draws together an evangelical, missionary stream with a catholic sensibility of presence, both dependent upon a sacramental vision of the world. A retrieval of traditions will be seen to have shaped the contemporary understanding of relations with Islam including an attentiveness to the experiences of the broader Anglican Communion. This retrieval amounts to a consolidation of traditional Anglican themes, re-interpreted for the contemporary reality of religious diversity, exemplified in Cragg’s adaptation of the kenosis theology of the Lux Mundi school. This retrieval is also a widening of the canon in the recovery of other Christian traditions. Thus, Williams retrieves the contemplative tradition of the Desert Fathers and the Eastern Orthodox sensibilities of the Russian émigré movement in his account of Islam. Both theologians will be seen to situate themselves within the retrieval and renewal of sources exemplified by the Catholic Church in Vatican II. Williams and Cragg also situate themselves within the sacramental, comprehensive vision of Richard Hooker, thus embodying a very Anglican engagement with Islam. Notable developments in historical Anglican 2 political theology are analysed and critiqued in the light of their responsiveness to a traditioned account of Anglican Christian-Muslim relations and their ability to support the diversity of encounters with Islam that the historical analysis suggests is necessary. The history of Fascist corporatism, however, is not only an unsuccessful story. Despite the failure of the “corporatist revolution” and “Fascist third way”, Fascist corporatism since the mid- Twenties helped the progressive development of a new political system to regulate relationship between State and private interests. The paper examines not only the institutional framework (the systems of formal laws, regulations, and procedures, and informal norms) but also their acts and real activities. It dwells upon internal debates, political and institutional importance acquired by corporative institutions in Fascist regime and behaviours of entrepreneurial organizations and labour unions. In this way, the paper aims to point out the “real” consequences of Fascist corporatism, different from the ideological ones.     Building community: Anglo-Catholicism and social action Jeremy Morris Some years ago the Guardian reporter Stuart Jeffries spent a day with a Salvation Army couple on the Meadows estate in Nottingham. When he asked them why they had gone there, he got what to him was obviously a baffling reply: “It's called incarnational living. It's from John chapter 1. You know that bit about 'Jesus came among us.' It's all about living in the community rather than descending on it to preach.”1 It is telling that the phrase ‘incarnational living’ had to be explained, but there is all the same something a little disconcerting in hearing from the mouth of a Salvation Army officer an argument that you would normally expect to hear from the Catholic wing of Anglicanism. William Booth would surely have been a little disconcerted by that rider ‘rather than descending on it to preach’, because the early history and missiology of the Salvation Army, in its marching into working class areas and its street preaching, was precisely about cultural invasion, expressed in language of challenge, purification, conversion, and ‘saving souls’, and not characteristically in the language of incarnationalism. Yet it goes to show that the Army has not been immune to the broader history of Christian theology in this country, and that it too has been influenced by that current of ideas which first emerged clearly in the middle of the nineteenth century, and which has come to be called the Anglican tradition of social witness. I’m sure that they do, as each of us lives out our faith in practice, taking seriously the gospel charge to love God without reservation and our neighbour as ourselves.     Satsang, a Contemporary Religion of Convergence Rajarshi Roy (SPR, a voluntary role in Satsang) B.E.(Mech), M.B.A.(Finance) Senior Member, Satsang UK Senior IT Consultant London Abstract: Purpose of this study is to identify the similarities in beliefs, traditions, and rituals of all the existing religions or religious practices of the world and explore the possibilities of religious convergence. The study found that although there are many similarities in the principles of the major religions in the world none of the old and existing religions offer religious convergence where a union of existing religions is possible. Satsang, a contemporary religion founded by Sree Sree Thakur Anukulchandra (1888-1969), a prominent philanthropist and one of the greatest philosophers of recent times, supports convergence. This paper explained the importance of initiation in the creed of a superior ideal in each of the major religions. It has also examined in detail about how people from any faith, race or religion can practice the principles of Satsang doctrine along with existing religious practices to accomplish the spiritual quests of individuals.
