CURRICULUM INTENT: Fine Art at St Michael’s is a vibrant and exciting course where students are encouraged to be independent, creative, practical, analytical and thoughtful. The intent of the curriculum is to build students’ knowledge, understanding and skills using a range of photography techniques and processes to enable them to develop their ideas effectively. They will be introduced to a range of historical and contemporary photographers, using research to inform their own ideas and creativity. In Year 12 students are introduced to digital and traditional photography through a series of projects, workshops and activities. Students learn how to present a digital portfolio effectively as well as experimenting with more artistic techniques in a sketchbook. They investigate and research a wide range of artists and photographers to influence and develop their own work and outcomes. Students learn how to use Adobe Photoshop proficiently, as well as other processes. Over the course of the curriculum students are given various opportunities to: • Develop their ideas through sustained and focused investigations informed by contextual and other sources, demonstrating analytical and critical understanding. • Explore and select appropriate resources, media, materials, techniques and processes, reviewing and refining ideas as work develops. • Record ideas, observations and insights relevant to intentions, reflecting critically on work and progress. • Present a personal and meaningful response that realises intentions and, where appropriate, makes connections between visual and other elements.

We also offer a range of trips including the London Photographers Gallery, Stratford trip, Photography workshop in Camden and an opportunity to go to Paris.

IMPACT: Students will learn through teacher led instruction, group work, peer presentations and critique, artist/photographer analysis, moving image, installation, sculpture and film. Students will grow and explore their own personal investigation and learn how to experiment with their ideas independently in year 13.

Formative assessment will take place regularly in order to assess students’ progress and understanding. Opportunities will also be given to mark their students work against the success criteria (both past and present student work) in order to develop an appreciation for the different levels of the mark scheme. Exceptional exemplar portfolios are used to inform students of what makes an exceptional portfolio.

Summative assessment will take place at regular intervals throughout the course, and opportunities will be given for students to rework and adapt portfolio to improve weaker areas and allow for further progress. One to one support and formal feedback will be provided regularly for each students.

Photography allows A-Level students to expand their creative horizons through taking and editing photographs. They will learn how to contextualise their work and develop an understanding of the creative process in industries using photography. By the end of the course, students will have produced a personal portfolio of work through the creation of photographs, digital presentations and written work; they will produce a 1,000 word thematic essay explaining the context in which their practical portfolio exists.
