COLLECT FOR EASTER P Alleluia! Christ is risen! C Christ is risen indeed! Alleluia! P Let us pray. O God, you gave your only Son to suffer death on the cross for our redemption, and by his glorious resurrection you delivered us from the power of death. Make us die every day to sin, that we may live with him forever in the joy of the resurrection, through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. C Amen

PRAYER OF CONFESSION P Let us confess our sins against God and our neighbor. Silence is kept for reflection P Almighty God: C For our redemption you gave your only-begotten son to the death of the cross, and by his glorious resurrection delivered us from the power of our enemy. Grant us so to die daily to sin, that we may evermore live with him in the joy of his resurrection; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, now and forever. Amen.

ASSURANCE OF PARDON

FIRST LESSON: Acts 10.34-43

3 PSALM 118.1-2, 14-24 The antiphon is repeated after it is sung by the cantor and then again after various verses. The Lector reads the verses in light type; the Assembly reads the verses in bold type.

1Give thanks to the LORD, for the LORD is good; God's mercy endures forever. 2Let Israel now declare, "God's mercy endures forever." 14The LORD is my strength and my song, and has become my salvation. 15Shouts of rejoicing and salvation echo in the tents of the righteous: "The right hand of the LORD acts valiantly! 16The right hand of the LORD is exalted! The right hand of the LORD acts valiantly!" 17I shall not die, but live, and declare the works of the LORD. 18The LORD indeed punished me sorely, but did not hand me over to death.

4 19Open for me the gates of righteousness; I will enter them and give thanks to the LORD. 20"This is the gate of the LORD; here the righteous may enter." 21I give thanks to you, for you have answered me and you have become my salvation. 22The stone that the builders rejected has become the chief cornerstone. 23By the LORD has this been done; it is marvelous in our eyes. 24This is the day that the LORD has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it. HYMN OF THE DAY: “With High Delight Let Us Unite”

APOSTLES’ CREED C I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead.

6 I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life Everlasting. Amen.

THE PRAYERS

For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen

Old St. Luke’s Church, Burial Ground and Garden This weathered stone Church stands on ground which has been the site of Christian worship for two and a half centuries. Pioneer militiamen accompanied Gen. John Forbes in his expedition to capture from the French in 1758, and some returned to make their homes in the Chartiers Valley. This site was an outpost of the British Army prior to the Revolutionary War. Services were maintained by Chaplains visiting the British regiment stationed here. This was one of the first churches to be founded on the frontier. Major William Lea, a member of the Forbes expedition, set aside a plot of ten rods (165 feet) square for the Church and Burial Ground, and in 1790 a frame church building was erected. Prominent in the congregation were Lea and Gen. John Neville, the federal tax collector during the Whiskey. Rebellion It is believed that St. Luke’s Church was the meeting place for Federalist neighbors seeking refuge from the rebels in the , 1791- 1794. The present stone edifice was built in 1852, unique in the period because of its stone gothic arches. Years later, a stone from the quarries of King Solomon's Temple and a stone from the English ancestral home of , were placed in the Church walls. Included in the furnishings is the Joseph Harvey pipe organ, built in London in 1823, and later brought over the Allegheny Mountains by mule pack. The church and organ were consecrated in 1854. Buried here are numerous veterans of the and the Revolutionary War, together with an unknown number of faithful souls. Also buried here is Jane Lea, baptized here in 1774 and described as "the first white child born in the Chartiers Valley.” Old St. Luke's is supported only by offerings at church services and the generosity of Annual Members.
