From the Governor’s Desk
Dear Rotarians,
Robin Sharma's compelling ques on, “You are born into genius, but have you resigned yourself to mediocrity?” begins to echo in our hearts in these two days when we par cipate in the District Conference, experience the engaging energy of speakers, and immerse ourselves in the pulsa ng passion that propelled them to achieve what they did in spite of the trying circumstances they faced. Our heads bow in respect; hearts melt at the hardships they faced; then, hope swells that if they did it, we too can.

He is - The Warrior in the fight against Polio
Ashok Mahajan is a Rotary icon. His latest achievements is the Polio Plus Pioneer Award.
In 1987 – 1988, he served as Treasurer of District 3140 and played an important role in raising maximum funds for Polio Plus program. In 1988-1989, he was the Chairman of a concert organized for raising funds for Polio Plus program. His club and District 3140 conducted the 'Child Protec on Days' for vaccina on of children, organized during those years twice in a year by Rotary India.
His relentless work figh ng polio was recognized. In 1996 he was invited to serve as the member of India Na onal Polio Plus Commi ee, Maharashtra. He concentrated on areas with high incidence of polio like Bhiwandi. He brought down the cases of polio from 48 to 3 in 1996-97. Govandi and Bandra-Mahim areas had high incidence of polio. Ashok Mahajan tackled the Bandra-Mahim belt. Being a frequent visitor to the Mahim dargah, he had access to the Imam who was requested to make announcements on preven on of polio. The Imam declined. Mahajan requested Rotary permission to string out banners. The Imam asked for 500 banners. He was given 1000 banners.
In 2005, Ashok Mahajan was elected Rotary Interna onal Director. Highest incidences of polio were in U ar Pradesh. On Mahajan's request, India Na onal Polio Plus Commi ee convened a mee ng of prominent Ulemas of U ar Pradesh in Delhi. Sprou ng couplets from the holy Quran and other Urdu couplets, he managed to sway the Ulemas.
In 2006, the Rotary Muslim Ulema Commi ee was set up in U ar Pradesh. There were numerous sects each with their own Ulemas. There was suspicion about the polio immuniza on. Stories that the polio drops would render children impotent raged. Polio drops were also portrayed as not acceptable in Islam. Figh ng against odds, Mahajan requisi oned the services of Dr. Tabasum, the Head of Paediatric Department of Aligarh Muslim University. Dr. Tabasum, in camera made a statement debunking the myths and mis informa on about the polio drops. The Ulemas also administered polio drops to their own children with the cameras rolling. These two camera captured instances spread all over U ar Pradesh. Travelling extensively in the rural hinterland of U ar Pradesh with the help of the Ulemas who were now convinced about the efficacy of the polio drops, the problem was licked.
In the year 2010, he along with PRIP Kalyan Banerjee celebrated New Year in Moradabad and inspired the Rotarians as Moradabad was the epicentre of Polio Virus.
Ashok Mahajan has been a member of the India Polio Plus Commi ee for over ten years from 1996. He served as the member of Interna onal Polio Plus commi ee from 2009 to 2013. Big industrial houses were not suppor ve of the causes for which TRF stood as they were not aware how TRF funds were u lised. Once this barrier was broken, he has played significant role in raising more than US $12 million from Aditya Birla Group for Polio eradica on program.
Some of the awards he earned are: Ÿ Regional Polio Plus Award Ÿ Interna onal Polio Plus Award Ÿ Polio Plus Pioneer Award.
The recent Polio Plus Pioneer Award is given to the Rotarians, playing an important role in Polio Program before 1992. India owes a huge debt to Ashok Mahajan for eradica ng polio. His lives by the credo of Smile, Serve, Sacrifice, Sa sfy.

An Initiative to Create Awareness – Touch me not
In India, a child is sexually abused every 15 minutes. The Na onal Crime Records Bureau report, released recently, shows in 2017 33,000 cases were recorded under POCSO (Protec on of Children from Sexual Offences) Act.
India is home to the largest number of sexually abused children in the world, but there is general reluctance to talk about the topic so the real number of cases could be much higher. According to a 2007 study conducted by India's Ministry of Women and Child Development, 53% of children surveyed said they had been subjected to some form of sexual abuse.
CSA is a serious and widespread problem in India as it is in many parts of the world today. The trauma associated with it can contribute to arrested development and a host of psychological and emo onal disorders that some children and adolescents may never overcome. When sexual abuse goes unreported and children are not given the protec ve and therapeu c assistance they need, they are le to suffer in silence. A survey has revealed that one in four families in India do not come forward to report child abuse.
With a view to create awareness in the community – especially among school going girls and their parents, teachers and school administrators, RC of Bombay West organized a One-Woman Stage Play – ABHAYA – which deals with this burning issue and tells us how the parents, guardians and other elders should respond, come forward, seek support of NGOs and ins tu ons and approach the authori es to ensure the accused don't go unpunished.
ABHAYA is wri en, directed and produced by Ms.Meena Naik, a well-known Marathi Cinema, Stage & TV actor and a social ac vist. This 60-minute one Act play gives a very powerful message to the audience to come forward courageously and seek jus ce. Unless this happens, we shall not be able to get rid of this menace in our society. More than 600 students, teachers, parents and community members from the neighborhood witnessed the soul-s rring solo performance by accomplished stage actor Ms.Sonal Khale at Patuck Educa on Campus, Santacruz East on Saturday, 19th January, 2019. The event was graced by Ms. Meena Naik, Mr.Adi Patuck, Chairman, Patuck Polytechnic Trust, Advocate Ms.Farhat Jahan Ali from MAJLIS Legal Forum (a non- profit founded by Advocate Flavia Agnes) and Rtn.Anand Gupta, President, RCBW along with several of its members and spouses. “Why are you not coming to school?” asked Ravi to his friend Sachin. Tears rolled out from Sachin's eyes. “I can't come to school now. My father is no more. We don't have money to pay school fees. Even my mother has lost hope to live.”
Sachin's father Tulshiram was a farmer. He was undergoing tremendous stress due to non-repayment of his loan from banks and local lenders. The repeated demands and threats from lenders were making his life hell. The ever-growing cost of living was further adding to the pressure. A family of 5 - Tulshiram, his wife, his son Sachin and 2 oxen - was becoming more and more difficult to support.
Resources were so limited that either humans or oxen could be fed. If the food was made for the human family, the oxen had to starve. Only Once a week the oxen were fed and that day, the human family could afford to have only one meal in the whole day. Rest of the days, the oxen would look at Tulshiram with hope and Tulshiram had no other op on than to look away as he could not face them. The guilt was killing him every day. He also tried to sell the oxen. But he found that there were many “Tulshirams” in the market struggling with the same situa on. They themselves were trying to sell of their ca le. Thus, he could not even sell them. He was ge ng depressed by the sight of his family suffering every day. Finally, he gave up one day and hanged himself on a tree in his own farm (which was mortgaged to the bank).
This story is not new to us. Every other day, we keep reading in newspaper about farmers commi ng suicides. Somehow, this news has started coming so o en that some of us have kind-of accepted this as a part of life. The problem is much severe than what we can imagine. In the above story, can we even imagine Sachin becoming a farmer? Even if he thinks, his mother will tell him to do anything but farming. And why not? A er losing husband, why would she want her son to commit a suicide?
So now, the farmers' kids don't want to be farmers. Most Other kids have anyways moved on from this outdated career. Soon, we will have to run a “Save the Farmer” campaign in line with “Save the Tiger” campaign. Our next genera on might survive without seeing the ger. But can we survive without the farmers?
No ma er how much money we make how much growth we achieve, we need to ask one ques on to ourselves, “Can we eat money?” It's the farmers who toil in the fields so that we can get our basic necessi es fulfilled. Most of us respect the army for standing at the border in harsh condi ons and protec ng us. But, is the role of farmer any less than a soldier? In fact, this is the reason why the slogan “Jai Jawaan Jai Kisaan” was given by our late Prime Minister Shri Lal Bahadur Shastri.
Today, the me has come, when we realise the importance of farmers for our country and humanity as a whole. Rotary is known for taking up projects which touch human lives. Some clubs have already done some projects like check-dams, Skill development, Schools, Renewable Energy, Nutri on, Literacy programs, Medical camps, Voca onal training etc. to help the farmers. But now it's (Illustration by Rtn. P.R.Shankar) me to be more empathe c and focus more on this burning issue.
Let's take this up as a challenge that we don't see any more Tulshiram hanging himself and no Sachin has to leave school.

2019-20 RI President Mark Maloney Unveils his Presidential Theme
Capturing the zeigeist of the decade, Rotary Interna onal President-elect Mark Daniel Maloney declared his Presiden al theme as: 'Rotary Connects the World' to the thundering applause of District Governors at the Interna onal Assembly, in San Diego, California, USA.
He enunciated his vision for building a stronger Rotary, calling on leaders to expand connec ons to their communi es and to embrace innova ve membership models.
The first emphasis is to grow Rotary — “to grow our service, to grow the impact of our projects, but most importantly, to grow our membership so that we can achieve more,” Maloney said. Maloney believes that connec on is at the heart of the Rotary experience.
“(Rotary) allows us to connect with each other, in deep and meaningful ways, across our differences,” Maloney said. “It connects us to people we would never otherwise have met, who are more like us than we ever could have known. It connects us to our communi es, to professional opportuni es, and to the people who need our help.”
Maloney also called on every Rotary and Rotaract club to iden fy segments of their community not represented in their club by crea ng a membership commi ee with diverse members. “Through Rotary, we connect to the incredible diversity of humanity on a truly unique foo ng, forging deep and las ng es in pursuit of a common goal,” he added. “In this ever more divided world, Rotary connects us all.”
Maloney urged leaders to offer alterna ve mee ng experiences and service opportuni es to make it easier for busy professionals and people with many family obliga ons to serve in leadership roles.
“We need to foster a culture where Rotary does not compete with the family, but rather complements it,” Maloney said. “That means taking real, prac cal steps to change the exis ng culture: being realis c in our expecta ons, considerate in our scheduling, and welcoming of children at Rotary events on every level.”
Maloney said many of the barriers that prevent people from serving as leaders in Rotary are based on expecta ons that are no longer relevant.
“It is me to adapt, to change our culture, and to convey the message that you can be a great district governor without visi ng every club individually, and a great president without doing everything yourself.”

RIPP K R Ravindran - on How Rotary Connects the World
Close at the heels of Interna onal President-elect Mark Daniel Maloney's declara on of the Presiden al theme 'Rotary Connects the World', RIPP K.R. Ravindran narrated how Rotary Club of Colombo (RCC) in Sri Lanka, and Rotary Club of Birmingham at Alabama (RCB) in the United States – 14000 miles away, connected to create history.
It all started ten years ago. K.R. Ravindran received an invite from Susan Jackson, Execu ve Director of RCB. How could he resist this invite from a premier club with 650 + members? At dinner, he extended an invita on to RCB members to visit Sri Lanka. RCB members gladly visited Sri Lanka soon.
Rtn Dr. Ed Partridge, Director of University of Alabama's Comprehensive Cancer Center and former President of the American Cancer Society, joined him to con nue the story. The visitors from RCB saw that the RCC had a breast cancer detec on program to address the exceedingly high death rate among Sri Lankan women due to repor ng of breast cancer at advanced stages. Physical breast examina ons and pap smears for cervical cancer were being done. RCB bought a mammography machine and ultrasound machine, and sent them to RCC. They also sponsored training of the Sri Lankan medical personnel at Birmingham. The Cancer Preven on & Early Detec on Center opened its doors in 2011. Using funds from a District Direct Fund, RCB purchased a server and custom so ware to record pa ent data, another detec on equipment, signage, medical supplies, and public awareness print pieces.
In the mean me. KR Ravindran was elected RI President. When he completed the tenure and came home hoping for a sabba cal, li le did he realize that he le the chair behind, but the Rotarian went home with him. Dr. Ed Partridge had changed him and changed his club forever. He drove home the fact that cervical cancer is the only cancer with a known cause - caused by a virus - human papilloma virus. Hence it could be prevented, detected, cured and eliminated. This caused palpable excitement in RCC.
RCC, RCB, along with Rotary club partners from Rotary Club of Nurmberg- Sigena, Germany and the Rotary Club of Zurich-Sihltal, Switzerland, used a global grant of 250 thousand from the Rotary Founda on for a mammography machine, two new digital processors, a new Human Papilloma Virus/DNA tes ng machine, 7,000 test kits for cervical cancer tests, and 5 devices for electronic recording of data. These partnerships across the globe worked miracles.
In Sri Lanka, every year at least 2000 women died of cervical cancer. Now a crusade began. They started vaccina on of girls between 10 to 14 years of age and conducted HPV test on women of the ages of 34 or 35. Sri Lanka Telecom sponsored a four-story building. Ashok Leyland donated two fully equipped screening buses and bore the expenses of drivers and regular maintenance. The Sri Lanka government bore expenses of vaccine, and secured a ten year contract at discounted price. 80% of the popula on of 10 year olds were covered in less than 6 months. This was an unheard of success. Now the program is sustainable. Replica ng and leveraging Rotary experience across the globe to save lives during Rotary Plus Program made this possible.
Sri Lanka is the first country in the world to eliminate cervical cancer. If two clubs so far apart can come together and achieve this, it can be done anywhere across the world. Rotary makes people come together, unite, connect, create las ng changes and transform the world
