  • Mindscapes of Space, Power and Value in Mumbai
Island Studies Journal, Vol. 9, No. 2, 2014, pp. 277-292 The epistemology of a sea view: mindscapes of space, power and value in Mumbai Ramanathan Swaminathan Senior Fellow, Observer Research Foundation (ORF) Fellow, National Internet Exchange of India (NIXI) Contributing Editor, Governance Now [email protected] ABSTRACT: Mumbai is a collection of seven islands strung together by a historically layered process of reclamation, migration and resettlement. The built landscape reflects the unique geographical characteristics of Mumbai’s archipelagic nature. This paper first explores the material, non-material and epistemological contours of space in Mumbai. It establishes that the physical contouring of space through institutional, administrative and non-institutional mechanisms are architected by complex notions of distance from the city’s coasts. Second, the paper unravels the unique discursive strands of space, spatiality and territoriality of Mumbai. It builds the case that the city’s collective imaginary of value is foundationally linked to the archipelagic nature of the city. Third, the paper deconstructs the complex power dynamics how a sea view turns into a gaze: one that is at once a point of view as it is a factor that provides physical and mental form to space. In conclusion, the paper makes the case that the mindscapes of space, value and power in Mumbai have archipelagic material foundations. Keywords : archipelago, form, island, mindscape, Mumbai, power, space, value © 2014 – Institute of Island Studies, University of Prince Edward Island, Canada. Introduction: unearthing the archipelagic historiography of Mumbai A city can best be described as a collection of spaces. Not in any ontological sense or in a physically linear form, but in an ever-changing, ever-interacting mesh of spatialities and territorialities that display the relative social relations of power existing at that particular point in time (Holstein & Appadurai, 1989).

Bobbytalkscinema.Com Responses/ Comments on “100 Best Performances of Hindi Cinema” in the year 2009-10-11. submitted on 13 October 2009 bollywooddeewana bollywooddeewana.blogspot.com/ I can't help but feel you left out some important people, how about Manoj Kumar in Upkar or Shaheed (i haven't seen that) but he always made strong nationalistic movies rather than Sunny in Deol in Damini Meenakshi Sheshadri's performance in that film was great too, such a pity she didn't even earn a filmfare nomination for her performance, its said to be the reason on why she quit acting Also you left out Shammi Kappor (Junglee, Teesri MANZIL ETC), shammi oozed total energy and is one of my favourite actors from 60's bollywood Rati Agnihotri in Ek duuje ke Liye Mala Sinha in Aankhen Suchitra Sen in Aandhi Sanjeev Kumar in Aandhi Ashok Kumar in Mahal Mumtaz in Khilona Reena Roy in Nagin/aasha Sharmila in Aradhana Rajendra Kuamr in Kanoon Time wouldn't permit me to list all the other memorable ones, which is why i can never make a list like this bobbysing submitted on 13 October 2009 Hi, As I mentioned in my post, you are right that I may have missed out many important acts. “Be united, persevere, and achieve self-Government, so that the millions now perishing by poverty, famine, and plague may be saved, and India may once more occupy her proud position of yore among the greatest and civilized nations of the world” – Dr. Dadabhai Naoroji Dear Seniors, Professional Colleagues & students, Today is the 164th birth anniversary of Lokmanya Bal Gangadhar Tilak, who was famously described as the ‘Maker of Modern India’ by Mahatma Gandhi. Lokamanya Tilak’s visionary theory of nationalist economics is the most relevant in achieving self-reliance and making of “Aatma Nirbhar Bharat”. The current pandemic and its worst after effects on Indian economy are yet to be visibly seen and 1at this time it is essential to keep focus on the economic aspect of Swadeshi as laid down by Lokmanya Tilak and plan accordingly. Apprehending the worst after effects of pandemic the Government through the Aatma Nirbhar Bharat Abhiyan (ANBA) has announced flurry of measures, legislative and financial, for agriculture and allied sectors, industries from various sectors, especially, Civil Aviation, defence, energy, housing, social sectors, etc. to reset Indian economy to a positive restart. Company Secretary, being a pivot profession in nation building is rightly placed to become a catalyst in the making of ANBA and become a reckoning financial power house of the world. The Focus issue in hand, brings various aspects of ANBA and role of Company Secretary in making it a great success. In short, we must tighten our belts to make abovementioned but modified quote of the Grand Old Man of India, Dr.

Ashish Mohan Khokar INDIAN DANCE TODAY. Indian classical dance traditions have been borne out of a sense of propitiation of the divinity. A certain spiritual content has always been its mainstay. It has also been essentially the art of a soloist, ex- cept in dance-theatre forms. Over two thousand unbroken years, it has grown to become the longest continuous dance culture, afford- ing an interesting insight into man and his relationship to stage in general and dance art, in particular. Its classical nature comes through by a set of code of grammar, content and concept. Thus, if in one form, the knees are to be bent while performing and a half-sitting position maintained all through, then it cannot be altered. The position of hands, the use of eyes, neck, torso and feet, all go towards making dance units, which be- come strings of movements, through which individual characteristics and a grammar is set which makes each form distinct and thus, with age and tradition, classical.
