© Lonely Planet 318 Chungcheongnam-do 충청남도 It’s close to Seoul and home to the fifth largest city in South Korea, Daejeon, but Chungnam – as it’s more commonly known – is not the most scintillating of provinces. Its attractions are largely very old (5th-century Baekje capitals) or utterly recreational (a bevy of beaches). Much of the buzz in recent years has focused on a new administrative national capital Sejong City, to be built near Gongju, but whether it materialises depends on the political winds in Seoul. For now, it’s Daejeon that’s the capital manqué, with flashy KTX services, all the trappings of modern Korean life and all its lack of urban charms as well. More interesting are the small towns left in its wake: little Geumsan is the hub of the ginseng industry, while Gongju and tiny Buyeo were once capitals of the ancient Baekje dynasty. The latter towns have retained a surprising number of old fortresses, tombs and relics, chief among them the tomb of King Muryeong in Gongju – like King Tut’s tomb, it was uncovered in modern times with all its burial artefacts miraculously intact. The province’s other main draw is its beaches. Daecheon Beach in the south is widely considered to be the best on the western coast, while travellers preferring some solitude can hop on a ferry to one of the nearby islands. To the north is Taean Haean National Park, dotted with more islands, beaches and the promise of wind-whipped fresh air – just what most day-trippers from Seoul are looking for. -

Conservation Studies of Korean Stone Heritages Chan Hee Lee Department of Cultural Heritage Conservation Sciences, Kongju National University, Gongju, 32588, Republic of Korea Keywords: Korean stone heritages, Conservation, Weathering, Damage, Environmental control. Abstract: In Republic of Korea, a peninsula country located at the eastern region of the Asian continent, is mostly composed of granite and gneiss. The southern Korean peninsula stated approximately 7,000 tangible cultural heritages. Of these, the number of stone heritages are 1,882 (26.8%), showing a diverse types such as stone pagoda (25.8%), stone Buddha statues (23.5%), stone monuments (18.1%), petroglyph, dolmen, fossils and etc. Igneous rock accounts for the highest portion of the stone used for establishing Korean stone heritages, forming approximately 84% of state-designated cultural properties. Among these, granite was used most often, 68.2%, followed by diorite for 8.2%, and sandstone, granite gneiss, tuff, slate, marble, and limestone at less than 4% each. Furthermore, values of the Korean stone heritages are discussed as well as various attempts for conservation of the original forms of these heritages. It is generally known that the weathering and damage degrees of stone heritage are strongly affected by temperature and precipitation. The most Korean stone heritages are corresponded to areas of middle to high weathering according to topography and annual average temperature and precipitation of Korea. Therefore, examination of environmental control methods are required for conservation considering the importance of stone heritages exposed to the outside conditions, and monitoring and management systems should be established for stable conservation in the long term. -

Tectonic Setting and Distribution of Mesozoic Granites Tectonically, South Korea can be divided into four provinces based on the distribution of sedimentary basins upon Precambrian basements. The pre-Cretaceous basement comprises two Precambrian massifs, the Yeongnam Massif in the South and the Gyeonggi Massif in the north, which belong to the Sino-Korean microcontinent. They exhibit Sinian tectonic trends (SW-NE direction) and are made up of Precambrian gneiss complexes with some Proterozoic to Jurassic metasedimentary cover (Lee, 1987). The Okcheon Belt between the two massifs consists of a northeastern non- to weakly-metamorphosed Paleozoic- Mesozoic sequence which grades into the Okcheon metamorphic belt to the southwest. The Cretaceous sedimentary basins in South Korea were formed by transtension driving the movement of the sinistral strike-slip faults (Lee, 1999). The sedimentary strata, the so-called Gyeongsang Supergroup, comprises non-marine sedimentary and andesitic to rhyolitic volcaniclastic rocks. The basins overlie the pre-Cretaceous sequences with a marked unconformity. The products of Cretaceous granitic magmatism are quite evident in two large Cretaceous basins; the Gyeongsang Basin and the Yeongdong-Gwangju Basin. Mesozoic granites of South Korea have been divided into two groups based on intrusion age: the younger granites of late Cretaceous to early Tertiary age, and the older granites of Jurassic age (Lee, 1974; Kim, 1975; Hong, 1987). -

Experiencing South Korea FPRI/Korea Society 2015 Korean Presidents: an Evaluation of Effective Leadership Author: Ellen Resnek: Downingtown East High School Lesson Overview: Through the use of various primary and secondary sources, students in this lesson will identify, understand and be able to explain the Korean President Power Ranking: Technically, the Republic of Korea has had ten heads of government since its birth in 1948: (1) Syngmn Rhee (1948-1960); (2) Chang Myon (1960-1961); (3) Park Chung-hee (1961-1979); (4) Choi Gyu-ha (1979-1980); (5) Chun Doo-hwan (1980-1987); (6) Roh Tae-woo (1987-1992); (7) Kim Young-sam (1992-1997); (8) Kim Dae-jung (1997-2002); (9) Roh Moo-hyun (2002-2007) ; (10) Lee Myeong-bak (2007-2012).; and Park Geun-hye, 2013–current. The focus of the research is the significance of dependence for communities to survive and adapt in times of environmental disasters. It shifts the emphasis on self-reliant communities for survival and examines the types and effects of dependence and external linkages by analyzing the range of community responses that include initial responses, early social impact, compensation, and conflicts after the Hebei-Spirit oil spill in December 2007 in Korea. The findings reveal that dependence is necessary, and the effects of dependence can be both positive and negative depending on the relations between external entities and affected communities as well as the community capacity to absorb resources and information. Thus, it is important to closely integrate the aim of reducing greenhouse gas emissions from the Green New Deal with that of reducing deepening regional inequality from the Regionally Balanced New Deal. To accomplish these dual aims, this study provides a collaborative trans-regional R&D strategy and a precise framework with three key dimensions: regional, technological, and organizational. We demonstrate that future mobility is the most important project of the Green New Deal, comprising 1963 nationally funded projects worth USD 1285.4 million. We also illustrate the level of government investment in nationally funded research projects related to future mobility for 17 different regions and seven different technology clusters related to future mobility, and determine which research organizations played an important role in each cluster for all 17 regions between 2015 and 2020. Our results indicate that the capital region and Daejeon have high innovation capability in many future mobility-related research fields, whereas some regions have capabilities in specific research fields such as hydrogen infrastructure, indicating their relative competitiveness.
