Please call in advance to make arrangements) Artists Raja & Radha Reddy: World-renowned dancing couple Raja and Radha Reddy (from the state of Andhra Pradesh, the birth place of Kuchipudi style of India classical Dance) have given a new dimension to the age old art of Kuchipudi dance without sacrificing the traditional poetry or dramatic sensibility. With rare excellence and perfection of technique they have earned the credit for Kuchipudi’s high ranking today among the major dance forms in India. Through their togetherness and perfect unison Raja and Radha Reddy portray the masculine vigor and lyrical charm of the classical pairs of Hindu mythol- ogy such as Shiva-Parvati, Rama-Sita and Krishna-Radha thus identifying themselves with the twin concept of Purusha and Prakriti, the male-female principle in Indian philosophy. In precise postures and refined patterns the duo re-enlivens the magnificent sculptures chiseled in the ancient temples of India. They formulated a syllabus for Kuchipudi repertoire sys- tematizing the basic movements and mudras and choreographed each item to make Kuchipudi classical dance form accept- able to modern cosmopolitan audiences. At Natyatarangini, a school they founded in 1976, they have trained nearly five hundred students from all over the country and abroad. For their contribution to the art form, they have won many honors and awards including the prestigious Padmashree Award (1984), the International Meridian Award, Sangeet Natak Acad- emy Award (1991) and Nritya Choodamani by the Krishna-Gana Sabha of Madras (1993). Raja and Radha Reddy have performed at prestigious venues all over the world. They had the honor of being invited as the first Indian Dancers to participate in the International Dance festival of Avignon in France and Salzburg in Austria. They have choreographed and presented dance ballets like Bhagavadajjukiyam, Manmadavijayam, Uma Parinayam, etc. Kaushalya Reddy: Molded in the strict discipline and austere commitment of the Sidhendra Kalashetra of Kuchipudi vil- lage in Andhra Pradesh and trained under the world famous dancers, Vedantam Rattiah Sarma and Raja and Radha Reddy's strict supervision, Kaushalya has emerged as one of the most talented artists of this world famous dance form. Gifted with a svelte figure, a pretty and sensitive face, flawless footwork and scintillating grace, Kaushalya has in abundance all that it takes to be a first rate danseuse. She is a superb example of the union of a strong tradition with willingness to enrich her art through intellect and aesthetics. Prominent dance forms like Bharat Natyam, Kathak, Kuchipudi, Odissi, Kathakali, Sattriya, Manipuri and Mohini Aattam are traditionally regional, all of them include music and recitation in local language or Sanskrit, and they represent a unity of core ideas in a diversity of styles, costumes and expression. After the overwhelming response to Raagotsav, an online film festival on Indian Classical Music, Films Division is presenting the first part of “Nrityanjali”, an on line festival on Indian Classical Dance and Maestros between September 23–25, 2020. Ten films on the life and works of India’s leading classical dancers will be streamed on Films Division website and You Tube channel. Nrityanjali showcases “Sitara Devi” (20 min./1995/Amar Varma), a film on doyen of Kathak Dance, hailed as the Queen of Kathak by Rabindranath Tagore, honoured with many awards including Padma Shri, Sangeet Natak Akademi Award and Kalidas Samman. “Yamini Krishnamurthy” (20 min./1981/Balwant Gargi), is on the leading Bharat Natyam exponent who also excels in Odissi and Kuchipudi. She has been honoured with Padma Vibhushan, Sangeet Natak Akademi Award and Natya Shastra Award. “Raja-Radha” (22 min./1989/Kunwar Sinha), a biographical film on the well known Kuchipudi dancer-couple Raja and Radha Reddy, who gave new dimension to the traditional Kuchipudi dance and honoured with Padma Bhushan, Sangeet Natak Akademi Award and Nritya Choodmani Award.

Answer MINISTER OF STATE FOR EXTERNAL AFFAIRS (SHRI AJIT KUMAR PANJA) (a) Yes Sir, (b) The Government has decided to open a Cultural Centre in Washington (USA). There are in addition several other proposals from various Indian Missions abroad which are currently under examination. (c) The activities of the 14 Indian Cultural Centres currently in existence reflects the needs of the local population. Their activities include the organisation of talks, lectures, exhibitions of visual arts, essay competitions, performances of dance & music, staging of plays, screening of Indian films, publication of news bulletins etc. Additionally, in most of the Cultural Centres classes in various aspects of Indian culture such as music, dance, Hindi language and yoga are being conducted. The Centres also maintain libraries, reading rooms and audio-video facilities for visitors. Apart from organising their own activities, the Indian Cultural Centres provide support to the respective Indian Missions for coordinating various cultural activities.T hese Centres develop and maintain contacts with local citizens particularly students, teachers, academicians, opinion makers and cultural personalities to project a holistic picture of India`s rich and diverse cultural heritage.

    Chapter -2 DANCING IN INDIA Social, religious and spiritual significance and functions of dance in India have already been discussed in the T' chapter. The said description is well enough to explain that dance is a part of Indian culture and traditions and it has achieved its own space in Indian society. However the history of Indian dancing helps to know more about it. A Brief History of Indian dance A History of Dancing that can be Traceable in Myths: In India, art has been always considered as a means of understanding of the ultimate reality. It is considered as spiritual, idealistic and inspiring in nature. Every art has its own features and the ways of expression and interpretation. It is not only a matter of sensuous enjoyment. Not a luxury to be enjoyed by the leisured rich, powerful people and not something to amuse oneself with. It has a deeper moral and spiritual basis. It has emerged as an effective means of worshipping god. It is considered to be as vital for human progress as devotion or knowledge. An art is believed to be a path to leading to something good and for achieving salvation. Great sages in ancient 44 India have been great artists; many great sages were the authors of some of our art traditions. Almost all art expressions in India had a spiritual background.
