P 4 THE DANCE INDIA EDITOR’SEDITOR’S DESKDESK adma Awards are one of the prestigious awards given by the Government of India and everybody in the country is aware of it. In recent times, some of the citizens feel that the awards have been losing its Pcredibility - nothing to do with the award as such but everything to do with the procedure involved in selecting the awardees. Earlier, the number of applications received for the awards were in hundreds but today it has reached over forty thousand. Out of which only a few receive the awards. Critics of today are sceptical about of the list of awardees and point towards discrepancies in the selection process. Is the government honouring those who have exhibited exceptional talent remains a question? The applications require thorough scrutiny and it is a time-taking procedure. Another question that pops up is that how is the ministry of home affairs able to process such a large quantity of applications in a matter few days? Are they really going through them? When you look at the recent list of Padma Awards, it makes one wonder if the awards are distributed among the states like the government schemes - according to a ratio. Also, most of the artistes from the art and culture community opine that these awards were given to people either through lobbying, political pressures or for political gains. In the coming days, people urge the government to maintain the credibility of these prestigious awards by honouring those citizens who truly deserve. Jai Hind! He started his sarod training at the age of five, and has studied with the great masters the late Sangeetacharya Anil Roychoudhury , late Sangeetacharya Radhika Mohan Moitra and Padmabhusan Acharya Buddhadev Dasgupta all of the Shahajahanpur Gharana. He has won numerous awards and fellowships, including those from the Government of India, the title of “Suramani” from the Sur Singar Samsad (Mumbai) and “Swarshree” from Swarankur (Mumbai).

    Man In India, 95 (1) : 83-96 © Serials Publications PRACTICING DANCE AND ANTHROPOLOGY Rukshana Zaman This autoethnographical account is based on empirical fieldwork and personal experience as a dancer born in a Muslim family, and expresses the contestation of two separate world views and their reconciliation in the academic and intellectual world. Here, I trace the journey of my life - born in a Muslim family, training in Odissi dance, and becoming a performer. This autoethnography reflects on my struggles in breaking the stereotypical norms to establish my identity in a society where dancing by girls is not encouraged. The Odissi dance, dedicated to the worship of Lord Jagannath, was a temple dance practiced solely by the maharis (female temple dancers commonly known as devadasis in South India), and was a part of Hindu temple tradition. Islam as a religion does not endorse idol worship and dance and music are considered taboos. Many times, during fieldwork, values and norms were misconstructed leading to misinterpretation of cultural ethos, and I constantly had to negotiate my identity at various times. In India, many Muslim women are associated with art and dance, and some are well known in their fields, forcing one to reflect on the syncretic tradition of the sub-continent and the more liberal traditions of Islam. I My identity as an Assamese Muslim1 is always met with awed expressions. The first statement that comes my way is, “You don’t look like an Assamese, you don’t have the Mongoloid features”. The next statement is, “Oh, you don’t look like a Muslim either as you don’t have the Pathan features - neither tall nor fair skinned”.

    Fusion Without Confusion Raga Basics Indian Rhythm Basics Solkattu, also known as konnakol is the art of performing percussion syllables vocally. It comes from the Carnatic music tradition of South India and is mostly used in conjunction with instrumental music and dance instruction, although it has been widely adopted throughout the world as a modern composition and performance tool. Similarly, the music of North India has its own system of rhythm vocalization that is based on Bols, which are the vocalization of specific sounds that correspond to specific sounds that are made on the drums of North India, most notably the Tabla drums. Like in the south, the bols are used in musical training, as well as composition and performance. In addition, solkattu sounds are often referred to as bols, and the practice of reciting bols in the north is sometimes referred to as solkattu, so the distinction between the two practices is blurred a bit. The exercises and compositions we will discuss contain bols that are found in both North and South India, however they come from the tradition of the North Indian tabla drums. Furthermore, the theoretical aspect of the compositions is distinctly from the Hindustani, (north Indian) tradition. Hence, for the purpose of this presentation, the use of the term Solkattu refers to the broader, more general practice of Indian rhythmic language.     Dynamics of melodic discourse in Indian music: Budhaditya Mukherjee’s ālāp in rāg Pūriyā-Kalyān Richard Widdess 1. Introduction This chapter presents an analysis of a performance of ālāp, with reference to the compositional principles that it demonstrates. Following a long succession of ethnomusicological and musicological studies, including Nettl (1974), Lortat-Jacob (1987), Nettl and Russell (1998), Treitler (1974, 2003), Nooshin (2003) and many other contributions, it is clear that compositional principles are no less important in music that is unwritten and “improvised” than in music that is written and “composed”; and that indeed, one can no longer speak of “improvisation” and “composition” in any oppositional sense. It also seems clear that the importance of compositional principles in unwritten music, such as ālāp, is related both to the performer’s need to recall memorised material and invent new material that is grammatical, and at the same time to the listener’s need to engage with, comprehend, and be stimulated by an auditory experience that, for him, happens in real time, whether a written score exists or not, and whether he is listening to a live performance or a recording. In this essay I will consider primarily the listener’s perspective; how far the cognitive processes involved in performing and listening to ālāp are equivalent remains an open question, but that they are closely related seems likely. 1.1. Ālāp and rāga The Sanskrit word ālāpa signifies speaking to, addressing, hence speech, conversation, or communication (Monier-Williams 1899: 153); it overlaps in meaning with the English word discourse. Ālāp in Indian classical music is a process rather than a genre, but it typically occurs in the form of a non-metrical “improvised” prelude, often quite extended, preceding a composed metrical piece.
