The Diptera of Lancashire and Cheshire: Craneflies and Winter Gnats by Phil Brighton 32, Wadeson Way, Croft, Warrington WA3 7JS [email protected] Version 1.1 26 November 2017 1 Summary This document provides a new checklist for the craneflies and winter gnats (Tipuloidea, Ptychopteridae and Trichoceridae) to extend the lists of the diptera of Lancashire and Cheshire first published by Kidd and Bindle in 1959. Overall statistics on recording activity are given by decade and hectad. Checklists are presented for each of the three Watsonian vice-counties 58, 59, and 60 detailing for each species the number of records, year of earliest and most recent record, and the number of hectads with records. A combined checklist showing distribution by the three vice-counties is also included, covering a total of 264 species, amounting to 75% of the current British checklist. Introduction This report is the third in a series to update and extend the partial checklist of the diptera of Lancashire and Cheshire published in 1959 by Leonard Kidd and Alan Brindle1. There were two previous updates, in 19642 and 19713. The previous reports in this series cover the soldierflies and allies4 and the Sepsidae5, the latter family not having been covered in Ref 1. The reader is referred to the first two reports for the background and rationale of these checklists, as well as the history of diptera recording and available data sources. The description of methodology is also kept to a minimum in the present report: only significant differences from the previous publications will be outlined. -

Cheshire Wildlife Trust Heteroptera and Diptera surveys on the Manchester Mosses with PANTHEON analysis by Phil Brighton 32, Wadeson Way, Croft, Warrington WA3 7JS [email protected] on behalf of Lancashire and Cheshire Wildlife Trusts Version 1.0 September 2018 Lancashire Wildlife Trust Page 1 of 35 Abstract This report describes the results of a series of surveys on the Manchester mosslands covering heteroptera (shield bugs, plant bugs and allies), craneflies, hoverflies, and a number of other fly families. Sites covered are the Holcroft Moss reserve of Cheshire Wildlife Trust and the Astley, Cadishead and Little Woolden Moss reserves of Lancashire Wildlife Trust. A full list is given of the 615 species recorded and their distribution across the four sites. This species list is interpreted in terms of feeding guilds and habitat assemblages using the PANTHEON software developed by Natural England. This shows a strong representation in the sample of species associated with shaded woodland floor and tall sward and scrub. The national assemblage of peatland species is somewhat less well represented, but includes a higher proportion of rare or scarce species. A comparison is also made with PANTHEON results for similar surveys across a similar range of habitats in the Delamere Forest. This suggests that the invertebrate diversity value of the Manchester Mosses is rather less, perhaps as a result of their fragmented geography and proximity to past and present sources of transport and industrial pollution. Introduction The Manchester Mosses comprise several areas of lowland bog or mire embedded in the flat countryside between Warrington and Manchester. They include several areas designated as SSSIs in view of the highly distinctive and nationally important habitat, such as Risley Moss, Holcroft Moss, Bedford Moss, and Astley Moss. -

Some groups are characterized by a single split. 1 July 2004 The coxa in flies is restricted in its rotation owing to a partial junction either between the meron and the pleurite or between the eucoxite and the meropleurite. Hence the coxa is fastened to the thorax not only by two pivots (to the pleural ridge and the sternal process), but at the junction named above. Rotation is impossible without deformations; the role of hinges between coxites is to absorb deformations. This adaptive principle is confirmed by physical modelling. Middle coxae of limoniid tribes Eriopterini and Molophilini are compact, constructed by the template of hind coxae. On the contrary, hind coxae in all families of Mycetophiloidea and in Psychodidae s.l. are constructed like middle ones, with the separate mediocoxite, centrally suspended at the sternal process. These cases are considered as homeotic mutations, substituting one structure with a no less efficient one. -

CRANE FLIES FROM THE MARITIME PROVINCE OF SIBERIA By Charles P. Alexander Of the Massachusetts Agricultural College, Amherst The crane flies that were taken by Prof. T. D. A. and Mrs. Cock- erell on their recent trip to Eastern Siberia have been submitted to me for determination. Because of the almost total lack of material and records from this region, the collection proved to be of excep- tional interest and furnished several important additions to the incomplete list of the Tipuloidea of Eastern Siberia. In addition to the species recorded in the following pages, Professor Cockerell writes me that he saw, but was unable to capture, a specimen of Ctena- croscelis mikado (Westwood) at Tsuruga, Japan. My sincere thanks are extended to Professor and Mrs. Cockerell, and to the National Museum authorities, for the privilege of studying this series of Tipu- lidae. The types and specimens of all other included species are preserved in the National Collection. In order that the known and probable components of the Tipulid fauna of Eastern Siberia may be more correctly understood, the following list of Regional Species is supplied. In addition, it may be well to indicate the occurrence of the European Dictenidia himaculata (Linnaeus) in this coastal province of Siberia, an enormous extension of the range of the species, which, however, has never been taken in Japan. REGIONAL SPECIES Almost the only Siberian Tipulidae that may be considered as be- ing regional are the following: Tipula hreviceps (Motschulsky)^ from Amurland and few Tipuline crane flies belonging to the sub- tribe Ctenophoraria, described in 1873 and 1S87 by Portschinsky {Ctenophora parva Portschinsky, C. -

Species richness of terrestrial and freshwater biota generally decreases with increasing latitude. Some taxa, however, show an anomalous species richness pattern in a regional or global scale. The aim of this study was to examine (i) regional variation in species richness, (ii) faunistic composition, (iii) occupancy, and (iv) proportions of different distribution types of Finnish crane flies. Analyses were based on incidence data pooled into 20 biogeographical provinces. Finnish crane fly fauna consists of 335 species; the provincial richness varies from 91 to 237. The species richness of all species and saproxylic/fungivorous species decreased with increasing latitude; mire-dwelling crane flies displayed a reversed pattern (Spearman’s correlations). Thirty-one species occupied a single province and 11 species were present in all provinces. Provincial assemblages showed a strong latitudinal gradient (NMS ordination) and faunistic distance increased with increasing geographical distance (Mantel test). Nearly half (48%) of the Finnish crane flies are Trans-Palaearctic, roughly one-third (34%) are West Palaearctic, and only 16 and 2% are Holarctic and Fennoscandian, respectively. -

LEICESTERSHIRE ENTOMOLOGICAL SOCIETY The Craneflies of Leicestershire and Rutland (VC55) John Kramer* Tipula maxima – Graham Calow LESOPS 26 (2011) ISSN 0957 - 1019 *31 Ash Tree Road, Oadby, Leicester LE2 5TE 1 Introduction It is necessary to say at the outset that, since craneflies are not a scientific group, its meaning has changed over the years. It seems to be synonymous with daddy long-legs , meaning all long-legged two-winged flies. These, in the past, have included Winter Gnats (Trichoceridae) Fold-winged flies (Ptychopteridae) and Dixidae. The present meaning, used here, is restricted to the super-family Tipuloidea (Order Diptera) which, for the past 20 years (Starý 1992), has been composed of four families - Tipulidae, Pediciidae, Cylindrotomidae and Limoniidae. I have tried to provide a firm basis for further work on craneflies in VC55, and to suggest what that work might be. There are voucher specimens for most, though not all, of the records and wherever there is only a single record, more records are needed to firmly establish that species on the county list. Pioneering work in Europe Before any meaningful lists of craneflies could be produced it was necessary to have fixed and unambiguous names for them. The genus-species naming system for doing this was first provided for the then-known craneflies by the 1758 volume of Linnaeus’s Systemae Naturae , published in Sweden, so this date provides a starting-point. Linnaeus named 14 of the more conspicuous craneflies on the British Checklist. Johan Christian Fabricius was a student of Linnaeus and did more work than his mentor on insects. -
