7 FINE ARTS AT CA: OLIVER!

In early March, 70 students from 1st through 12th grade performed in the largest musical the school has ever produced. Oliver! was performed for 5 sold-out performances at the Maury County Arts Guild. The story is about Oliver (Hutson Cofer), a malnourished orphan in a workhouse in Victorian London. He becomes the neglected apprentice of an undertaker (J.T. Pierce and Olivia Mastalerz). Oliver escapes to London and finds acceptance amongst a group of petty thieves and pickpockets led by the elderly Fagin (Jonathan Thompson). When Oliver is captured for a theft he did not commit the benevolent victim, Mr. Brownlow (Cade Harrison) takes him in. Fearing the safety of his hideout, Fagin employs Bill Sikes (Will Shirel) and the sympathetic Nancy (Macy Morgan) to kidnap him back, threatening Oliver’s chances of discovering the true love of a family.

17 SOFTBALL STATE CHAMPS!

CA SOFTBALL WINS 2019 STATE CHAMPIONSHIP

With only two upperclassmen on the roster, including 1 senior, most teams state tournament participants Cascade and Dickson County, along with would be considered to be in a “re-building” mode for that season. Most Zion, Goodpasture, Lipscomb, Brentwood and Dobyns-Bennett. As the teams would not anticipate a deep postseason run with two sophomores, two season went along, the girls grew more confident, became closer as a team, freshmen, and three 8th graders in the starting lineup. Most teams would not and began to realize the opportunity that was directly in front of them. Those set a lofty goal such as a trip to the TSSAA Spring Fling, where they would lessons learned were put to the test during a tough 1-4 stretch in late April be one of only eight teams playing for the coveted State Championship. that included 2 losses at eventual 2A runner-up Lexington and Ardmore, The 2019 Lady Bulldogs were not like most teams. Coach Anderson knew an Alabama perennial power. The Lady Bulldogs faced the challenge head that this team had talent, chemistry and the makings to be special, but was on, remained focused, and went back to work. The CA softball team would the timing right? Would they recognize the opportunity they had this year? go on to win the rest of their regular season games, finishing the regular Would they finally get over the state sectional hurdle that had tripped up the season with a 24-6 record, a #1 State ranking in class A, and leading the state Lady Bulldogs for 3 consecutive years? These questions and more would be allowing only 1.2 runs per game. It was time to put it all together as the 10A answered with a resounding YES! district tournament opened in Culleoka. They knew their season had been building up to the events that were going to take place over the next 3 weeks. The Lady Bulldogs would be tested throughout the regular season, as the They were ready! schedule was comprised primarily of larger schools due to the fact district 10A schools refused to play CA in the regular season. The mantra that was The Lady Bulldogs opened the tournament against the host Lady Warriors, constantly preached by the coaching staff was “Every Pitch,” a reminder to and made quick work of Culleoka defeating them 9-0. The next game was remain focused and locked in for the entire game, as well as an entire season. against Santa Fe, who managed a run against CA, but ended up getting run After an opening night loss to Summit, the Lady Bulldogs rebounded by ruled by the Lady Dogs 11-1. In the district championship game, CA run winning 17 of their next 18 games. Key wins during that stretch came over ruled Richand 10-0 earning the Lady Bulldogs their 6th straight district title.

18 The Lady Bulldogs opened the region tournament against the Red Devils For a team whose starters were comprised of one Senior, one Junior, 2 of Jo Byrns, who they easily defeated 9-0. The region championship against Sophomores, 2 Freshman, and three 8th graders, they refused to follow the Houston County was a rematch of last years region championship, in which path of a team in “rebuild” mode. Instead, they continued to work every day, the Lady Irish won 4-2. This year would be different! CA jumped on Houston gained confidence as the wins piled up, and made history as the 2019 CLASS County in the 1st inning and never looked back, going on to win 4-1 for the A STATE CHAMPIONS! region 5A championship, and also earning them a spot in the state sectionals for the 4th straight season where they would host the Huntingdon Fillies. The West Tennessee team came in confident, boasting a team full of seniors with state tournament experience. Things did not go the Lady Bulldogs’ way early, as the Fillies homered on the first pitch of the game, giving the guests a quick 1-0 lead. But once again, the Lady Bulldogs faced the adversity head on, grabbing back the lead in the bottom of the 1st, then cruising to a 7-1 victory, 2019 SOFTBALL ROSTER earning the Lady Bulldogs their first State Tournament appearance since 2014. To many people outside this team, reaching the TSSAA Spring Fling SENIOR - BRITTANY ADAIR might have seemed like mission accomplished, but not this team. Filled with confidence and a determined spirit, they sensed the opportunity that was JUNIOR - BAILEE LUNA in front of them and went back to work. After talking with championship SOPHOMORE - KARLEY HARAKAS, JOURNEY MITCHELL, winning coaches Marty DeJarnette and Richie Estep, the Lady Dogs were determined and poised to win their last game of the season. When the ABBIGAIL ADKINS, BRENNA SMITH bracket came out, the Lady Bulldogs knew they were on a collision course FRESHMEN - KARLI QUILLIN, LANEY TURNER, with the #2 ranked and defending state champion Summertown Lady ANNABELLE COTHRAN Eagles. These two teams, the two best teams in the state according to the rankings, were bound to meet at least once in the Boro. And meet they did! 8TH GRADE - KENNEDY CHATMAN, CHLOE CARTER, TORI DUVAL, SOPHIA WARREN, CAROLINE PERRY The Lady Bulldogs would open the state tournament against a familiar foe in Cascade. CA had defeated the Lady Champions 7-0 and 10-0 earlier in the year, but Cascade had standout pitcher and UTC commit Brooke Sudduth in the circle. After falling behind 2-0 before recording an out and having runners on 1st and 2nd, the Lady Bulldogs did what they had done all season, composed themselves, faced the adversity head on, and went to work. CA fought back, continued to focus on every pitch, and eventually took a permanent 3-2 lead in the bottom of the 3rd which would go on to be the final score, and also the only runs this team would allow the rest of the season.

The Second round of the state tournament saw the CA Lady Bulldogs take on the Whitwell Lady Tigers. Whitwell had been to Spring Fling each of the past 3 years and were determined to make their mark in 2019… somebody forgot to tell that to the Lady Dogs. CA jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning and never looked back, winning 7-0 and setting up a winners bracket final showdown with the Summertown Lady Eagles.

Summertown had defeated their 2 state tournament opponents by a combined score of 23-0. This game, however, was a pitchers duel through 4 ½ innings, deadlocked 0-0. In the bottom of the 5th though, CA broke the game open with 5 runs, a score that would hold through the remaining innings, and earn the Lady Bulldogs a spot in the state championship, a position the program has been in only once in school history (2006- loss to Trinity Christian).

As the Lady Bulldogs made the trip to the Boro for the 2:00 championship game, they knew they were one win away from holding the state championship trophy. Summertown came through the loser’s bracket, earning a rematch with the Lady Dogs. The girls from CA were determined to take care of business early and make school history, and they did just that. After gaining a 2-0 lead in the top of the 2nd, CA’s defense would make sure that was enough to secure the victory. CA would add an insurance run in the top of the 7th, pushing the lead to 3-0, which would be the final score earning CA it’s first Softball State Championship.

The Lady Bulldogs finished 34-6, winning 16 straight games to close the season. CA outscored their opponents in the postseason 68-5. Lone Senior and UNA commit Pitcher Brittany Adair, was the clear leader on this team and received a lot of credit for the success of the Lady Dogs, and rightly so. But this championship was a team effort that received major contributions from all 14 players during the season. The infield made up of Karley Harakas, Tori Duval, Kennedy Chatman, Journey Mitchell and Abbigail Adkins did not commit an in the state tournament. The combination of Bailee Luna, Karli Quillin and Chloe Carter possessed speed and athleticism that limited the holes for opposing teams. Laney Turner was solid behind the plate all year, giving confidence to the pitchers in the circle, including Journey Mitchell who will take over as the #1 pitcher for this team next year. This championship team also had contributions from Annabelle Cothran, Caroline Perry, Sophia Warren and Brenna Smith on the base paths, at the plate, and consistently filling major roles all year.

For more than 35 years, families and supporters of Christian education have invested in the future of Columbia Academy by establishing and contributing to endowments at CA. Endowments are established as an investment where the principal remains for perpetuity and only the growth and interest gained are used.

Most of Columbia Academy’s endowed funds were created to provide need-based financial assistance for students. That investment provides financial assistance to students or meet other important needs for teachers and students. We will be able to bless the lives of more students with financial support to attend CA and learn about God’s word on a daily basis, since we are making the switch to Division II in athletics for the 2019-20 school year.
