7 FINE ARTS AT CA: The Word Is Out! The Fine Arts Department at Columbia Academy continues to expand each year with new programs and more student participation. The band program alone is involved in multiple events and competitions each year to sharpen its sound. The band program consists of curricular and extracurricular activities for students ranging from 5th grade beginning band through high school. New Band Director Mark-Aaron Hilliard is thrilled to join an already thriving program going into the 2018-2019 school year.

“I am very excited to be teaching band here at CA,” said Hilliard. “All of the faculty, staff, students, and parents have been very welcoming. I am already impressed with the band students here and am looking forward to helping the program continue to grow.”

During the 2017 football season, the marching band entertained the crowd with a show from the “Pirates of the Caribbean” film score and this year will present a 70’s themed show. It was a memorable year with the addition of the colorguard. The CA Band also has a basketball pep band and added a jazz ensemble that performed at the Annual Whitthorne Jazz Festival. Another huge for the Fine Arts this year was the third annual Fine Arts Festival held in the spring, which showcased the talents of students in Lower and Upper grades. The festival included visual art galleries and solo and ensemble performances in chorus, theatre and band. The Spring Hill campus also hosted their annual Arts Festival in the spring, which showcased student artwork and music.

The CA Theatre Department had its strongest year of program growth in school history. In the fall, several students put on the one-act stage production of The Write Stuff, an endearing tale about word play. In the spring, audiences were treated to an Upper School production of the Broadway hit musical Guys & Dolls. As a wonderful addition after the curtains closed, two students were nominated for the 2018 TPAC Spotlight Awards in Nashville (Jessica Hixson - Standout Female Soloist & Cladie Pollard - Standout Supporting Actress).

“This was a school first for Columbia Academy,” said director and theatre teacher Sarah Tatom. “For the first time, a CA production (Guys & Dolls) was adjudicated and earned nominations. CA was the Cladie Pollard and Jessica Hixson, only Maury County school represented at the awards Nominees at the TPAC Spotlight Awards this year. We are so proud of all these students who made this such a memorable experience.”

We talked about how no one was giving us a chance except us. Not many people ever get a chance to play for a state championship. Pitcher Alex Huey accepted Estep’s challenge by throwing nine scoreless innings on only two days of rest to match Weathers at the mound. Will McCall and Ragan Chaney set the tone with doubles early in the game. In the fifth inning, Loretto had the bases loaded and Chaney, Blake Kincaid, and Max Ballard get a home to first play that rarely happens in a game. 13 2017-18 BULLDOG ATHLETICS IN REVIEW

IT WAS THE YEAR OF PLAY UP! Our Bulldogs faced new challenges, some new opponents and a new direction as Columbia Academy strategically prepares to play in TSSAA Division II high school competition starting next year. In the 2019-2020 school year, the Bulldogs will begin a new era in Division II (the private school division). The mission of CA will remain constant as our athletic programs are ready to rise to new challenges ahead.

ONE GAME AWAY In the 2017 season, the Bulldogs took the football program just one step closer to the ultimate goal of a State Championship. For only the second time in school history, the team made the state semifinals, and for the first time, hosted the big game on the home field. It was a monumental moment for the Bulldogs, Maury County, and for team members from the former rosters of CA Bulldog football.

“It was special to host our first TSSAA football semifinal game at home,” said Lansdell. “It’s just another brick in our foundation of growth. It was a great experience that we got to share with many alumni and supporters of our program. Having the opportunity to be the first team to host this game is something that our players, coaches and team will always remember.”

The Bulldogs finished the season with a 12-2 record, bringing the four-year record for the graduating Class of 2018 to 38-5. The Class of 2018 Bulldogs never lost a region game! The challenge to continue this legacy in the program has CA football alumni come home to support the Bulldogs at the semifinals game. been handed down to the 2018-19 team, who plan to fight for the opportunity to finish the job this season. With the largest senior class in CA history, the numbers are definitely a factor that will help the Dawgs to reach their goal.

“We’re looking forward to a new chapter in CA football,” Lansdell said, “We’ll be competing at a different level with numerous private schools across Tennessee. This is a great opportunity to continue to grow our program and be recognized as one of the top football programs in the state. The teams that we play on Friday nights may change, but the expectations to perform at a high level will always remain the same.”

14 BACK TO THE GLASS HOUSE The 2017-2018 Bulldogs basketball team has grown comfortable at the overcomers in the face of new challenges and finished the season with “Glass House” of MTSU’s Murphy Center over the last five years. In a 26-7 record, as District 10 A Champions, and Region 5-A Champions. 2018, the Dawgs returned to the State Tournament for the fourth time The heartbreak loss came at the State Tournament Quarterfinals when in five years. I feel like I lost five sons from this team. They all forward to the challenge of playing in Division II with many schools we will be missed greatly, but we have a great nucleus of players returning already play on our schedule. It’s an opportunity to grow our program that will look to make their own memories, and they will be special in and take it to a new level.” their own way. I can’t wait to see what the future holds for them.”

“Having four sports competing in the state tournaments speaks volumes about our student athletes and coaches,” said Athletic Director Pernell VARSITY BOYS’ SOCCER Knox. “It shows that we have dedicated coaches who are well versed in The Dawgs finished the season as District Runner-Up and Region Runner-Up their sports, and athletes who are passionate, hardworking and will put with a 11-6-1 record. 18 Columbia Academy Annual Giving Report 2017-18

Columbia Academy is truly blessed with generous supporters like you. During the 2017-18 school year, you came through in a huge way. Thank you for sharing the blessings that God has given your family to make a lasting impact on our school and our students.

Because we do not receive government funding, we rely solely on our supporters to help us fulfill our mission. While we will never achieve perfection, we are grateful to our supporters who understand our mission and love our school. Generous donors enable us to focus on teaching our students about Jesus and how to be more like him every day. Thank you to our families and supporters who helped us this year. Thank you for believing in and showing your support for the important work we do at Columbia Academy.

Your support of Columbia Academy allows us to continue to fulfill our mission: • Our students are led by dedicated Christians inside and outside the classroom. • Our students attend a Bible class daily. • Our students have multiple opportunities to worship the Lord each week. • Our students are equipped academically and spiritually so they can be successful in all aspects of their lives.

As we begin our 40th school year, we trust that God will continue to bless us as we honor Him and serve our young people and their families. Thank you again for your investment in Columbia Academy. We ask for you to continually keep CA in your prayers. The following Annual Giving Report is for the fiscal year ending May 31, 2018.

Columbia Academy Endowment Funds Columbia Academy is incredibly fortunate to have an endowment that is worth over $3M. Since December 1984, families have invested in the future of Columbia Academy by establishing endowments or supporting endowments by giving to them. The intent is for the principal to remain for perpetuity with only the growth and interest gained to be used for current needs.

Most of Columbia Academy’s endowed funds were created to provide need-based financial assistance for students. Thank you to the many generous donors who have helped grow the CA endowment, knowing that these funds will continually serve to provide needy students with an opportunity to learn in a Christian environment. After a move to TSSAA Division II athletics beginning in the 2019-2020 school year, we will be able to bless the lives of even more students with financial support to attend Columbia Academy.
